War in Ukraine

It’s not entirely a military showdown. It’s mostly economic.
Why don't we just spend our treasure and intellect building back our economy instead of going around the world and trying to destroy our rivals?

It has to do w/ China overtaking the US as the global superpower. We don’t want a military war with the Russians or the Chinese, but we really don’t a war with both allied together at full strength.
So we think that we should start a two front war with two nuclear powers just to maintain our hegemonic status?

You also can’t act like the Chinese aren’t being provocative with their words and their actions.
Provocative meaning in response to our actions?

They are creating actual islands to serve as airfields and jumping off points to fight a war .
Those islands are there in response to the US and our love of sanctions, blockades and embargoes. They have to maintain a presence in the South China Sea to protect the Mallaca Straits from being bottled up by the US navy. China is the world's largest importer and exporter.

I’m not making the policy here Ras. I guess we’re always the bad guys though right?

you mean not china, and not even in China's "sphere" of influence.

also none of those nations are particularly under the US's sway. Indonesia? Singapore? Mayalasia? Thailand? We don't have an operational naval base anywhere in the area. The Phillipines (1,500 miles) or Diego Garcia (1,800) would be the closest. China itself (1,200) would be closer to the Malacca Strait than we are. The phillipines we don't even have an open naval base, only air fields.

Those islands are there to steal from their regional neighbors. not because we are some existential threat to Malacca.

China's 9 dash line is one of the more bizarre claims I've seen. How could they possibly argue all that is their territory?

Indeed. It's got a real funny history.

Made in 1935 as 11 dashed lines by the Republic of China, modern day Taiwan. it was later revised in 1949 to the 9 dash lines because the communists thought the original was too imperialistic taking away from the commie vietnamese.

1949 PRC China, not the RoC who made the map originally, doesnt look particularly close to modern china. Basically none of the south was theirs. Tibet was free. The west was independent.

I would offer them a trade. They can have their 1949 sea border, if they take their 1949 land borders too.

BS. The made up islands came before sanctions. If you think those islands are going to be anything but fodder if hostilities should break out, I've got a bridge for sale that you can use to link them. Those islands are a PITA right now; they are undefendable when push comes to shove. No different from the bypassed Japanese held islands in WW2.

So what if they came before or after sanctions? That is not relevant. The Chinese were perceptive enough (based on our actions with others) to realize this before it got too late.

Again, America needs to worry about America and rebuild our own industry at home vs building up a military empire.

The only part of that where we agree is that we need to rebuild our industrial base. We should never have given in to the stupidity of globalism; it's just not a game you play when you have the highest standard of living and highest labor cost - you'll lose that game 100% of the time.
