War in Ukraine

Putin is basically daring other countries to intervene, threatening to resort to nukes. He has to know that no one wins if nukes come into play. His country will not survive. In some ways, I wish someone would call his bluff, in others, I of course worry he just might be serious. But I do think he's bluffing, feigning strength for his people. The last thing he wants is to look weak.

I do think he is bluffing as well. That he has to already resort to this bluff means things are going ****** for him.

Why is Russia (Putin) invading Ukraine .... just to have more territory?

What is Russia fighting for? What's the end game for them & to the world?
Putin doesn't want to be surrounded by NATO or NATO-friendly countries. JMO, but the reasoning is a combination of security and strength. If Putin doesn't appear "strong" to his people, his grip could begin to loosen, his power threatened.

That guys Twitter page has a lot of videos of a lot of dead russkis and they keep stacking em
Yeah that guys Twitter page is really tough to look at. That’s the most graphic images I’ve seen yet. What Putin has done to Ukraine and his countrymen is unacceptable. These images need to be made available for all Russians to see what he’s senselessly doing to their sons .

I actually understand not wanting an installed, relatively unfriendly government next door (how would the US feel if that happened in Mexico or Canada?). What makes no sense to me is that he's trying to appear strong and the invasion has been a mess.

Germany and Japan's status as agressors certainly made the victorious Allies' demand that they be demilitarized a just one, but my point is that their continued existence as nations was benefited by -- indeed contingent upon -- their demilitarization. I was responding to the assertion that "demilitarization should NEVER be an option of a country wanting to stay a country." I'm not saying it's a good option for most countries in most circumstances.

We also committed to defend either country if they were attacked which was a very important part that you left out

I think he severely underestimated the resolve of the Ukrainians to remain independent.

I was trying to find what my Russian friend said, but she usually deletes her comments after I read them if we're talking about Russia or Putin. She did mention about the Russians thinking they rather have a strong leader than anything else.

I think one possibility to consider in the so far underwhelming Russian performance would be that a faction or factions within the Russian military see this as an opportunity to rid themselves of Putin by sabotaging the effort and setting him up as the fall guy.

Not saying that is what is happening, I'm just speculating on how to explain the seeming lack of military competence.

This has turned into a major wake-up call for Europe and I hope America. I don’t think Europe actually thought he would go through with this, and I don’t believe Putin expected the backlash from the world.

After rebuilding the Russian military and putting his own stooge in the White House, Putin seems to feel quite the superior man. My belief is that the effects of total power are worsened in his case, by personality flaws and the use of Performance Enhancing Drugs, which are infamous among Russian athletes. If that is accurate, then he might be a real nut case with a finger on the big button, who is not likely to get better.
