Warlick deserves more time to shape Lady Vols

Ah yes, I can't imagine why we would hire someone with Notre Dame connections. The only other program over the last five to six years to challenge UConn for national supremacy. Also not coincidentally the only other team nationally that runs a fluid offense where the players are empowered and taught to read the defense and react accordingly. Holy sh*t I can't imagine why we would want any part of that when we can play 90s style chuck the ball close to the rim and hope someone cleans it up style of basketball. :good!::blink:

We're the only fanbase in the country who thinks we have to hire coaches and AD's with UT ties. Spend the money and go get the best coach available. Give them the resources to be successful and then sit back and let them do their job. Who gives a crap where they're from or where they coached previously.

Holly's interview with Nell during halftime wasn't encouraging. Sounded like the same mix of excuses, conflicting statements ("Talent doesn't win ball games...but I'll always take talent"), understatements/delusions ("We've hit a couple of bumps in the road," "It's taken longer to get there [the team to gell] than I anticipated"), and false bravado ("I've got such passion for this program and school...I love to teach...I can't imagine doing anything else"). Having passion is great, but passion without results doesn't do much good. She did say that she planned to be "doing this job" [coaching? Or HC at Ut?] until "somebody tells her she can't" (maybe not her exact words, but pretty close).

Her bringing up the 1996-97 team with their 10 losses also smacked of excuse-making. That team lost starting PG Kellie Jolly in October & she wouldn't be back for 3 months (during which time they lost 6 games). Meanwhile, shortly after she finally returned in Jan., then-starting PG Laurie Milligan was lost for the season. They also had to play UCONN twice (not the powerhouse they are today but still only two years removed from a NC). And key players such as Holdsclaw & Jolly were only sophomores; the upperclassmen were the bigs. And the defending NC team had lost Marciniek to graduation.

Yes, a team can bounce back, but the two teams & the circumstances are entirely different. In many ways, including increased parity, this team faces a steeper uphill climb at this point.

The remainder of the SEC schedule isn't looking too good. We lucked out by having the weaker teams among those played twice (and all the top teams only appearing once on the schedule). Still, here's how I see the last 8 regular-season games from our standpoint:

SC, A&M: Underdogs (since we play TAMU at their place).

Georgia, Vandy: Tossups (especially playing Vandy in Nashville).

LSU, ALA, Ole Miss, Arky: Favorites.

Any results are possible (well, beating SC is highly unlikely), but barring a complete conversion of confidence & execution, I would think that most would predict a stumble or two. Home court has not been a great advantage this season, and playing on the road can be dangerous even against weaker teams (as A&M found out).

The next three weeks will demonstrate whether, as Holly said, we have "turned the corner" or not.

Can we get to 20 reg. season wins before the SEC tourney? Sure. Could we possibly win the SEC tourney? Sure.

Right now I doubt anyone's placing any serious bets on either happening.

Why Not? She has won one in a row, 50% of the last two games, and the last game she cut down on the number of times she folded her arms. The year she filled in for Pat should have been enough to see that she was not a HC for a higher echelon BB team. Then she was given an extra year for achieving less than stellar achievements?? Unless the team completely bombs, she will be given another year to achieve less. She has proven she can not coach her way out of a bag. If she could, she would make adjustments at the half - NOT. :thud:

I can define every players weaknesses and strengths right now and for most of them they are the same ones they started the season with. If this staff would understand what each individual player needs to work on they would get better. So what exactly is she teaching them nothing that I can see.

I'd like to see Holly win without talent because talent does win ball games when that talent plays like a team.

What my point was trying to get across is let's try to stay with connection to Lady Vols basketball. Yes, programs like Notre Dame, UConn, Maryland, etc. are top notch programs but that wasn't what I was trying to get across.

We could use a coach with that type of knowledge & success as ND & UConn but I'd prefer to stick with UT connections. That's just me! Everybody has their own opinions about this just like everything else about Holly.

Wiedmer: Warlick deserves more time to shape Lady Vols | Times Free Press

Boo! I think we see the shape, and it is not good.

1) Unconvincing motivator and leader.
2) Unprepared team with a preseason ranking of #4.
3) A signing class of 0.

Another year or two and we will be rock bottom.

I guess that we even see these articles means that it is on more people's minds than just this board.

Stem the bleeding. Do it after the season. Every year we wait will just make it that much harder to get back up.

that guy writer have a love crush for holly.

Holly played it just right. Rather than heading out 10-12 years ago to prove her head coaching chops, she stayed on Pat's bench knowing she'd get her turn by default.

Instead of pushing her out of the nest, Pat held her close with the promise of ascension. But it was Pat's program to do as she wished, so it is what it is.

I was surprised to see that the Lady Vols are still averaging a tad over 10000 home attendance so far this season. Almost 13000 came to see the Bama game. I suspect this average will only go up with home games against Usc, Arky, Ole Miss and Georgia remaining. To me, this shows that Holly still has support among many Lady Vol fans.

I think Holly might have found an answer to the zone problem and that is the 4 guard, one post lineup. Will Holly continue to use this lineup?? I hope so, because the offense moves much better that way. Graves has shown us that she plays well as the lone post player.

If I see Holly starting both Graves and Russell together again, I might start beating my head against the wall, because it's obvious to me and many others that having both of them in at the same time really slows this team down. If Holly figures the right lineup, I can see us finishing out the season with only one more loss. I can even see us beating SC if we play smart and limit our turnovers. We need no more than one loss in the regular season and a good showing in the SEC tournament to hopefully secure at least a 4 seed in the NCAA tournament as a host team..

i to was quite surprised with the size of the crowd but considering the age of those coming to games and demographics its becomong clear that team record plays little into the attendace stats

"Especially since there's at least a realistic possibility of UT's women missing the NCAA tournament for the first time ever"

that is hard to say about a Top 25 ranked team

I'm not sure what they meant by she deserves more time,I think she has done a pretty good job so far,it is just an off year for the Lady Vols,it happens and it is happening to CHW right now,of course with no more years than she has been a head coach,it kinda of glares at you,but remember, there is still a lot of basketball to be played

if they stop with the dumb turnovers,i think this team will surprise us,the Offense is starting to look better, now they need to ramp up there Defense

Ha. Maybe the writer was speaking in geologic terms. You know, like how it takes a million years for a mountain to rise up another half a millimeter.

I'm actually slightly sympathetic to the notion of time because each incoming class is different, thus it takes some time for those players to gell. But the kind of time needed in that situation is generally pre-season practice and 10 or so games. Not a whole season.

Well Holly will not have a chance to gell the 2016 recruiting class into the system. This year should really be the last time she has a chance to gell any players at Tennessee.

Today I heard Holly's interview after the Alabama game and she thinks that because 12,000 fans showed up they support the Lady Vols and she is correct, most support the Lady Vols but not your sorry brand of coaching. Get real Holly you are the worse thing that could have happened to the Lady Vol brand.

Really a good job, with 7 5 stars and the 3rd best team on paper? What about the failure to recruit a big for the last four years or the 2016 donut? The defense is not really that bad. If the offense plays more consistent and not play the inside or else offense, we might have a chance to turn this thing around. We have been making dumb turnovers for the last five years, how long should a coach be given to correct this issue? A coach with top three talent should not be having an off year. Bad coaching also happens and leads to players not playing up to their capability. That is the main issue we are having an off year because the talent we have is not playing up to its potential. It is not a secret. Holly and her staff has to find a way to get that talent to play up to their press clippings if not this team will not make the NCAA Tourney. We MUST play the rest of out games with a sense of urgency.

I like the 2016 class going to be a good one don't think we have to worry about them underachieving on the court. I think they will almost play so well they will seem invisible to the fans.

After re-watching the Bama game I am of the opinion that the team is better than they were a month ago. I think we can attack a zone now and get great looks. I guess there will be games when we can't make them. I think Holly should make each guard concentrate on driving the ball. Not all the way to the basket but into the paint to get 8 to 10 foot shots. From there if the defense covers you can kick to the wing. We need a lot of that and Carter, Dunbar, Middleton, and Cooper have to knock them down when they are open.

Warlick was stressing medium range jump shots as far back as the Wichita State game. The key is hitting them. This team isn't good enough on defense or on the boards to make up for a poor shooting game.

Hmm, let me see:

McDonald's All Americans:
1. Mercedes Russell
2. Jaime Nared
3. Diamond Deshields
4. Alexa Mddleton
5 Kourtney Dunbar
6. Tea Cooper
7. Bashara Graves
8. Jordan Reynolds
9. Nia Moore

I would almost bet the farm, that if Auriema (sp??) or McGraw, staley, etc., had that talent they would have no more than 2 losses............

Moore and Dunbar were not McDonald's All-Americans.

can think of many losses to lesser teams over her tenure, and wins against "better" teams?? where are the signature wins over the past 5 years? Kentucky? Oregon State?

They are challenged as shooters. The third quarter seems to be when they all go blank. I was happy to see them drive the ball last night in the fourth quarter. When your not hitting shots getting to the foul line is the next best option.
The combination of foul shots, three pointers, and mid-range shots got us over 70 points. This team would be about 20 and 2 right now if they could score 70 a game. They have a long way to go to be an elite team. I doubt we make it to that level this season.
