Watching UK and AU

That’s the thing.

He lied and got players to lie over the whole BBQ deal. He put himself before the program to cover his own a$$.

It was his selfishness that made me lose respect for Pearl.

I think he was also involved in several years of cheating at Auburn or looking the other way. Two current players missed an entire year. Crazy stuff. Person is the one doing time for it.

Have you been paying close attention to the Auburn games? I doubt Auburn makes it far in the tournament; they keep squeaking by some mediocre teams (beat Vandy by 4...I mean, what else is there to say). They aren’t going to continue having refs biased toward them the entire way against better teams during the tournament like they did in the UK game.

If Bruce makes the NIT next year and we get a final four next year, will you be hating on Bruce?
It was obviously Pearl's elite coaching that made a career 80% FT shooter for New Mexico State miss two after getting fouled just before the buzzer. If he just makes one, Auburn goes home in the first round instead of going to the Final Four. How different would the narrative on Pearl be today if that kid hadn't choked?

It hasn't even been a whole decade, though. We struggled for two years, and then underachieved thru a season and nearly produced our second ever E8 appearance. A year of Tyndall interrupted by another NCAA investigation, then two recovery years under Barnes, followed by the greatest two year run in school history.

Given the perception, turmoil, and turnover of that time, I think we experienced quite a bit of success in the 8 years since, all things considered (2 S16s and a 2nd rd exit).
I think the perception of that time period, the media and their constant reminders of the negatives of our program made it about impossible to recruit well during Barnes first two years. Until he had success, it was going to be a tough sell.

And the early narrative on Barnes was that he was washed up and just using UT as a "golden parachute" into retirement. It didn't help that many of our own fans bought into this too.

You're exactly right. From the 2010-11 season through the 2014-15 season, the Tennessee men's basketball program had lost 3 different head coaches and two of them received a show cause sanction from the NCAA Committee on Infractions. That it only took Barnes four seasons to get us to a #1 ranking and a Sweet 16 is amazing. And putting aside the performance on the court for a minute, there were no player dismissals (such as Tyler Smith, Ramar Smith or Duke Crews), there were no player suspensions for failing drug tests covered up (like Brian Williams) and most of all, our head coach wasn't under NCAA investigation for violating NCAA rules and trying to cover it up (like both Pearl and Tyndall had been). Up until the OT vs Purdue, last season was the most enjoyable season of Tennessee men's basketball ever... both on and off the court.

Yep, it takes luck, talent, and a good system to make it that far. Pearl has had pretty good luck this year (and in the tournament last year like you said), but his talent isn’t quite as good this year. I see them fading in March and UK over performing in the tournament again (and I say this as someone who prefers Auburn to UK...but is still kinda mad at Pearl).

Kind of like how people say the football program has sucked for over a decade, when 2 of Butch's teams ended 9-4. The 2015 team should have beaten Oklahoma and Florida, and had Alabama on the ropes at Alabama, in year that Alabama went undefeated and won the NC. The 2016 team started 5-0 and got up to #9 before the downfall. Granted the 2016 is remembered for choking but that team should have won the East. All legit issues with Jones as coach aside (and I'm nowhere near a Jones apologist), going 9-4 2 years in a row isn't "sucking".

Yes, that's what I thought as far as rankings in 2000 were concerned. My point with this guy is not who he likes, but that he's incorrectly spewing "facts" in a discussion. I loved Pearl and thought he was a great CEO of the program. But that ship came and left after his lies. He knows he did wrong, but this poster making the claim that basically every successful program cheats if they win is pretty short-sighted.

I'm going to guess he doesn't come back to this thread.

Don’t think Bama went undefeated that year I believe they lost to Ole Miss in Bama.

Although a shorter coaching career to this point, Pearl has the same number of final four appearances as Barnes.

Cheating in college basketball basicly has nothing but positive consequences. Until the NCAA does something about it your not really trying unless your cheating. Even supposed lilly white coaches like K are buying players. Bruce is simply operating in areas that the NCAA is allowing coaches to operate in. Pearl is bending the rules and taking other coaches that are bending the rules to the woodshed because he is outcoaching them.
