the older person is still going to go to their spanish speaking market and such. most kids seem to pick up english just fine. bilingual teaching has ruined the school systems in southern california though.
I imagine the public school system in California, much like the rest of the nation, would have been ruined anyhow.
That said, I am not in favor of bilingual education; I am in favor of education in whichever manner a private proprietor wants to teach. Public schools have become institutions aimed at stifling creative and independent thought, in favor of turning out "good citizens" who have an amazing capacity to memorize BS, yet have little to no capacity for applying logical thought to anything.
