We’ve been overrated all year

I don't know that we've been overrated all year. We handled Kansas and should have beaten Arizona on the road. All that to say, however this team has been trending down. We just look like a tired team. You can't lose games like the one tonight. No excuses.

What looked like a for sure top 4 seed in the SEC tournament looks like it'll be a big surprise if we finish in the top 4. We've got at least 4 more losses coming, and likely more.

In the first half of the SEC we played Ole Miss, Miss State twice, home against Vandy, SC, LSU. The bottom of the conference. Big difference from Auburn twice, KY twice, Vandy on the road, Alabama, Florida on the road. The back half of the schedule has exposed us.

Again you’re leaving out some of the most impressive OOC wins any team in college basketball has had this year. We’ve not played the best teams in the SEC yet, so technically haven’t been exposed by anyone yet. It’s incredibly difficult to win on the road. We’ve seen it across college basketball ALL year. Tonight was a horrible performance and a game we should have won. Revisit it after the next 7, and we can have a genuine conversation about if we were exposed or not.

Very fair assessment. Tired and injured. Vescovi hasn’t looked right since his injury and JJJ going out isn’t going to help us. This may be the year that a round 1 exit in the SEC tournament is exactly what we need. Take the extra rest and recover for the NCAAs.

You two have each other. Just don’t make any decisions involving money or fire.
See that's the thing. I didn't say fire Barnes. I just said we are way overrated and certainly aren't a top ten team. And we will not only have each other, we will have most of the world agreeing with us on Monday. I wish I were wrong.

I can't understand why people turn discussions into something they are not. People really are that emotionally tied to opinions I guess.

Regardless, I have been wondering if we lost a good assistant since Schofield and company. We seemed to have it all with those guys. Or maybe the one and done players mixed with transfers aren't helpful to Barnes' system and he does better with a large group that knows his entire system intimately?

Been overrated all year - not a top 10 team. Our soft early schedule including the SEC first half is why we’ve been ranked so high. Now that the schedule has toughened up we are losing some games. We will be a 3-4 seed like last year and lose in the second round again.

This team looks like dodo.

One thing is for certain, we are playing worse as the season progresses. At this point we peaked against Texas. And if they don’t respond we could have another 5-6 losses before the SEC tournament and we will be talking about one of the worst implosions in UT basketball history.

This is not a top ten team and shouldn’t have been all year. A top ten team would have beat Vandy by 10+. Alabama beat them by 57.
True but Bama also got destroyed by one of the worst Big 12 teams, which really looks great for the conference by the way, while we’ve beaten 2 of the best. Basketball has a lot of ups and downs. Maybe this year we finally get the slump out of the way early and we’re peaking come NCAA time. A guy can dream can’t he?

Barnes has never had a team here or at Texas get to the second weekend without having top 20 offensive team. The 18-19 team here is his only top 20 offensive team so far in eight years. This team is nowhere near the top 20 in offense. Stats do not lie especially the last 25 plus years of Barnes career.

Our schedule is easier now than it was early. We played good against the hard teams and poorly against the trash

Agree the team was overrated. That’s going to get corrected soon. The real problem is that the talent on the roster is overrated. Barnes just hasn’t recruited well enough to take the next step. Now teams like bama, Arkansas are going to pass us by.
Was? We beat Kansas by double digits and we’re sitting on 2 losses for a long while. We were the ones destroying teams. Team seemed on track all the way until Texas game. My concern, was that Barnes is over working the team in practice.

Nothing has looked right since then. Vescovi has an obvious injury and isn’t being held out to heal. Plays are not being designed for key to get 3 point shots. ZZ needs fresh legs. No surprise he nails a three after being on the bench in foul trouble.

Phillips is lost. Awaka, a guy that should be in high school, is your most assertive offensive post player. What does that say about Barnes development of his big men, specifically on the offensive end.

This was a bad bad bad loss. Vandy going nowhere.
Their frat boys acted like they win a natty last night. Mockingly playing Rocky Top and chanting “it’s great to be a Tennessee Vol”. “Thanks for coming all this way”… like literally most UT fans just walked over to Memorial and outnumbered Vandy “fans”. They can enjoy getting to .500 I guess and staying on edge for the NIT selection show… also 65-0

Another stupid thread. Christ this place sucks.
I've been refraining from beating my dead horse, but OP is 100% correct in that we've been overrated since the preseason. I mentioned that a couple times in the past, yet we've been ranked in the top 10 for a substantial amount of time. I get that we play phenomenal defense, but what good is it if you can't beat middling conference foes?

Ratings are based on present performance. We were playing like a top 10 team early in the season and beat some good teams and some blue bloods that didn't have it together yet. I do however think we've regressed on both ends of the floor since then.
