We all owe Hadden an apology

Our secondary shat the bed tonight! So embarrassing, especially when we knew cats were one dimensional and we couldn't stop it and we couldn't get past the blue wall. Ugh! So frustrating...

Not me…I never disparaged Hadden. However, our DB coaching and our overall defensive scheming and it’s over-use of zone in passing situations is absolutely horrendous! It’s one of the worst in the SEC…if not college football!

Not really. He was certainly improved from last year but I’m convinced our much improved pass rush covered for a lot of secondary sins including his. The lack of a pass rush tonight exposed them badly and I doubt Hadden would have saved them. We’ll never know now. All I do know is they better find that pass rush again before Georgia comes to town or they will clean our plow. The defense made that jabronie Leary look like Peyton.
thats because our guys cant play zone and the ball at the same time,, its so frustrating to watch at times. 3 and 3 you zone out 10 yards deep every time.

Secondary wasn’t nearly as effective without him. Don’t know what you‘ve got till it’s gone.

He didn't play well early but really turned it around. He should be dang proud of what he accomplished before he got hurt and the fanbase is lucky he's on the team.

Burrell, McDonald, McCullough, Slaughter, Turnage all need to give back their scholarships. I'm so tired of their lackluster coverage. Let the young guys earn their stripes. Maybe they'll get some picks, maybe not, but there's no way they can be worse than the aforementioned.
McDonald made a great play on a crucial 4th down pass break-up.

Hadden is a team and locker room leader.

Does anybody know if he has his Covid year left to play?

Not his biggest fan, but he is missed. Still wouldn't change what we've got in McDonald and McCullough though. Those two...especially McDonald....are awful. Maybe with so few game left, we might be able to play those younger guys without burning a redshirt?
McDonald is the only one that actually had a pass breakup today. He was not the issue. The outside guys were easily the problem today. Safeties played pretty solid in comparison.

the pass rush was getting almost zero pressure on most plays. You let a decent QB sit back and stand on his spot and he's going to do well.

You're right, but he was also able to get the ball out because he could not cover any of the short stuff they were doing. Roman Harrison had a particularly awful night trying to cover quick outs. Turnage got his eyes in the wrong place at least a few times and got burned (and then benched). Guedy-Lally was the best we had, but he wasn't fantastic. Burrell wasn't that bad, but he still plays way too soft at times, which is why they got a couple of those comeback routes against him. LBs also got beat several times in the middle of the field.

At the same time, you have to give them some credit to. There guys made some really impressive catches tonight with our guys putting their arms and hands through a guy's arms trying to make a catch, yet they still made them. Plus Leary was just very accurate, which he hasn't been most of the year.

Actually "all" of us don't. Some of us saw that the criticisms were unfair.

That said, he isn't the only reason the D looked worse. One, the holding really was egregious. The pass rush has been a big part of the secondary's success. Two, Banks went back to playing soft coverage for some reason. He keeps doing it. It keeps not working. He has them play more aggressive. It works... then he inexplicably goes back to the crap we saw tonight.

This IS how bad officiating changes a game. It doesn't just impact the particular plays where a choke is not called a hold or when a player's jersey is almost ripped off. it impacts ALL plays.

That said, Hadden had the guts to play in the offensive player's shirt. The "attitude" so many didn't like was just an expression of how he tried to play. If the guys that are playing aren't doing that... then make them do it. If they can't then play someone else. Blitzing and giving a 10 yd cushion on receivers... doesn't work.

The plan was obviously to take away the run and force Leary to beat the Vols. The problem is that almost every time they play that strategy... it makes the opposing QB look like a Heisman contender. Time to burn and bury that "strategy".

That's what happens when they find a 250 lb OLB matched against a back or receiver. Not as "awful" as it was a poor defensive play design.

No it was pretty awful, you can go back and watch it but he was mostly just trying to cover the flat in the zone, but then he would follow a guy way inside instead of passing it off (and give up the quick out). Or he would slip coming out his break (multiple times). I'm not saying it is particularly great play calling, but that was the call and he needs to execute. I've seen him do it before successfully, but tonight was not one of those nights. I'm not putting a ton of blame on him, as he was just part of a way bigger problem. Turnage was far worse than him. Slaughter possibly was worse as well. Also, it was largely completions to Dingle or maybe Gattis against Roman, not so much backs but certainly not receivers.

Only the armchair coaches owe him an apology. I've had his back even before the SC Jr game last year. His dawg mentality made me a big fan of his. People don't appreciate what they have until it's gone.
