"We" and "Us" in Broadcasts

The broadcast team, in my humble opinion, has more of a right to use we or us than people on this board do. And it happens in every thread. Well except people who actually participated in athletic events sanctioned by the University of Tennessee or Fostermom...

I was trying to wind this down, but feel compelled to point out:

I don't dispute their right to use it. I just question whether it comports with standards we should expect of broadcasters. The consensus here seems to be that it does, in spite of my own opinion.

I understand your point and it is a good one. You're just used to the professionality utilized by "our" old school announcer, John Ward. I was simply pointing out that I read a lot of posters in here using our and we when referring to the Volunteers. I personally try to avoid it but sometimes slip up and say it but don't begrudge others for saying it. :pardon:

Understood. I think there is a distinction though. I myself do say "we" and "us" when talking about the Vols. I've never taken a snap or an inbound pass, and never even attended U.T. But they are still "my" teams- teams that I follow and love. I think it's fine for casual conversation among fans. I would just rather our broadcasters not use the terms.

And when I say "our broadcasters" I don't mean to imply I've ever discussed the Vols on air - unless you include local talk radio. :) Or discussions I have had on amateur radio. :)

Well, I've talked to Rob Fischer, Dave Woloshin, George Lapides and Jeff Weinberger live on the air... :eek:lol:

I am kind of fond of Lapides. Woloshin is a horrible homer for the U. of Mem., who I dislike intensely. I like Jeff though.

I agree about Woloshin but I did win a $30 gift certificate for Grisanti's Bolla Pasta from him in his Handsome Dan biggest loser contest when I picked Wyoming to beat the spread against Tennessee. Didn't think they would win the game though.

so let me get this straight.... Vol fans our upset that our or I'm sorry Tennessee's broadcasters are using ''we" or "us"......lmao you have got to be kidding me. Certainly wouldn't be appropriate if they were broadcasting for fox sports or CBS but this is the vols broadcast team and if anyone should be offended by it...or annoyed...it should be a non biased party listening in.

I'd like to help you get this straight, but I'm having a little trouble following your post. I'm sure part of it is attributable to my tequila consumption, but I think you bear most of the blame.

I don't care if it is for local, national, university owned, or any of the like - if you are a credentialed journalist/broadcaster calling or writing on a game it is expected to be an non bias report.

The Daily Beacon - the school's student newspaper doesn't use "we" or "us".

And inside the media world you are considered a homer and lose all credibility for using those attributes.

In this case in particular, Bob Kesling rarely uses the term "we" or "us". Bert never stops. It is what it is and people have excepted it, but he is getting paid for a service and should conduct himself in a professional manner.

Did you ever hear John Ward say "we" or "us". He could have gotten away with it, but he knows what it means to be a true broadcaster.

I just don't agree that they should be calling the games "as fans." They can love the University, be excited when good plays are made, etc., but I do expect them to be as objective as possible. But I'm beginning to think I'm in a minority.

It is sad really, and that is why it has become acceptable. Games should be called objectively no matter who is calling them.

Even the national guys went to school somewhere, they have friends on teams, and I am sure they are fans of somebody, but they check that stuff at the door and handle their business.

So, a team's own broadcasters can't show bias? Please cite me some examples of broadcasters, who were employed to call the games for one particular team, and never showed bias.

They all do it, but the point here is that they shouldn't.

LOL. They are paid by the University. Bert played here. He can say we if he wants.

That is the other thing. I have no problem with Bert being the biggest fan ever, just don't do it on air.

And I know I am in the minority on this next statement, but unless you are a part of the team (in any capacity) I don't think you should use "we" or "us".

Would you like a tissue?

Homerism in college football/basketball radio broadcasted specifically for that team or even in pro-sports is what makes it great.

No one wants to listen to Bob Kesling get more excited over a game winning layup for Vanderbilt or a last second game winning TD by LSU than he does for a Tennessee touchdown. If they're listen to the Vol Network - their probably not looking for that crap. Bob will put you to sleep.

Now - on the other hand - Larry Munson was a tad too homerish for me - but he was a super extreme.... but I could still appreciate how much he means to Georgia fans.

Yes they should.

Why not? You think they will get a larger audience base from across the nation if they are less partial? Lol.

That won't help them one bit - and they'll also lose people who don't want to listen to a bunch of boring guys like on the NFL radio. Puts you right to sleep.

I used "we" several times the other day on the Ole Miss game thread, simply because it was easier than typing Tennessee or the Vols.
And though they do not use we, national broadcasters are quite often biased. Keith Jackson was rarely neutral imo.
