Irrelevant. Until they are beaten, they should remain #1.

If they were retaining the same team as last year then maybe I would agree.

Your stance on this though is a reason why so many teams start off over/under rated in the pre season.

It makes little sense to base a ranking on the previous year when it would be so easy to use our brains and stats to come up with a more reasonable way to rank teams.

This is far from the same team Florida ST had last year. They are far less dominant. Stats comparable between this year and last season prove that out.

CBJ is not the only HC in America allowed to rebuild a program ! If you haven't noticed the Hogs, then that's an issue. CBB is building a juggernaut of a running game that will be mixed with Play-action passing, (remind you of a certain team from the 90's)
couple that with great defensive recruiting and they will be a force in the West.
We will see it up close the next 2 years I think ?:hi:

I agree. From the games I've watched of them, they seem to be on the rise just like we are. However if/when we do play them we will already be at juggernaut status with the classes Butch is pulling in. As long as they don't have RunDMC playing we should be ok :)

I do think there needs to be a better system to rank teams. However how else do you rank them? Especially in the preseason. How could you justify ranking any other team above FSU? Is it solely based on stats? Strength of schedule? Wins/losses? How well the team performs in a win/loss?

I guess if Winston didn't return and many on the offense and defense didn't return, I would totally agree with you. However FSU returned weapons on both sides of the ball.

I'll concede that ranking Florida St. #1 makes good sense at the start of the season. I am just suggesting that the ranking can be subject to fluctuate according to circumstances as the season unfolds.

Often times a teams pre seson ranking or whatever box they were put into(as far as how good or bad they will be) holds far too much weight and the AP voters would never adjust these rankings accordingly.

Utah St. this year is a good example of that. I remember wanting to smash my TV every time I heard the same expert analysis repeat the same tired predictions on their team basing it off of "last season" Multiple people, multiple shows - same repetitive predictions.

For a larger example: There are numerous teams every year that start off top 10 and sometimes even top 5 and are complete garbage by year's end. A 4-8 Florida team comes to mind. Sure injuries sank them but I am referencing how long it took them to drop from their lofty pre season ranking.

I think we'll have to win out to be 10-20 on the AP poll. If we win out and lose the one to bama then I think we have a tiny chance to be in the 20's.

If we win the rest of our games except for Bama then we would definitely be ranked in the teens. The lowest ranked three loss team in the top 25 was ranked 17th. With the schedule we would have played and the teams we would have lost to there is no way in hell we aren't top 15. Also if we win out with one more loss to Bama we have a decent chance of going to Atlanta.

Keep losing and we'll be #1? No just kidding. I think being ranked and not beating anyone yet is a little premature. However, I like that the national media is seeing us as a power again. I think after we beat Florida we will be in the top 25 in most polls, but if not just keep winning and it will take care of itself.

so....do you think a team that goes 0-12, but loses by 3 to every team in the top 12 should not be ranked over a team that went 12-0 over the bottom 12 teams in the nation?

Thats an extreme example, and I am not saying TN should be ranked right now. but your idea of "without beating anyone without winning is premature" is a little off base, in my opinion anyways, obviously not in the polls.

We would be 4-0 w/ Notre Dame's schedule: Rice (H), Purdue (H), Michigan (H), Syracuse (@ NJ).

They've got Stanford at home and @ FSU coming up in the next 3 weeks. I don't think they will be undefeated after those 2 games.

That doesn't seem right. If we win out, we will have 2 losses, and will have beaten 3 ranked teams, and one team that started the season pretty high in the polls. We will also have likely won the SEC east. If we win everything but Alabama we will still have won 9 games, and will have beaten 2 top 25 teams and a third that, again, was ranked highly not too long ago. And, we will have a non-negligible shot at winning the SEC east.

The option where we win out should have us ranked in the 7-12 range. The option where we lose to Alabama and win the rest should leave us in the 15-20 range. And, if we play a close game against them we could be a couple of spots higher - depending on how the rest of the season pans out. After all, 2 three loss teams finished in the top 15 last year, and I doubt either of them played a more difficult schedule than ours this year.

Well, our opinions were fairly close. Guess winning a bowl game would help our cause too.

Think about it..
You are saying Tennessee can go 9-3 with their schedule and not make the top twenty???
