We Can't Challenge The U.S. Military

I've read many reports on the X-47, but I went straight to the site of the company that develops it. It specifically says that the, "X-47 is the first unmanned jet designed to take off from and land on an aircraft carrier." It's right on the front page of northrop grummans site. Just click on the 2...

That quote says that the X-47 is the first unmanned jet designed to take off from and land on an aircraft carrier.

MontereyVol has stated that it is a fact that drones have already been launched from aircraft carriers and destroyers.

These two statements are both possible under 2 scenarios:

1) The drones could have been launched from aircraft carriers and/or destroyers but landed somewhere else.

2) The drones could have been launched from an aircraft carrier and landed on an aircraft carrier but not have been specifically designed to do so. Those crafty military guys could have found a way to do it despite the fact that the drones weren't actually designed for that purpose. Imagine that - the ability to improvise, adapt and overcome.

It's possible, and I can admit when I'm wrong, but I've never heard or read of a report that a drone has launched from a carrier. Therefore, it would have to be a classified operation. Until there is actual proof though, I'll stick with my evidence.

The way you've sounded you might as well have been working on classified projects. Your running in circles now...

What circle? One merely cannot state troop or ship movements for public knowledge unless one wants to win an argument just to lose their job.

For the last time carriers will be here, unless they decide to go smaller with the amphibs or they design a new way to transport air wings.

Correct, I believe San Diego, Mayport and Norfolk are already vying for a carrier to become a tourist attraction.

Ships do undergo block upgrades, but all 3 Zumwalts will have similar structure, tech, and armament subject to upgrades throughout its lifespan. The certainly won't be launching fighters or 100 drones.

Of course they will all have "similar' structure and tech. But they will have three different mission assignments to which they will have to have built into them. I am not sure why you are trying to add fighters into the argument since I have never seen or mentioned them being launched from a DDG? and you are aware they are developing UAV's just for Destroyer based operations?

I prove you wrong, and you give me this response? Weak...

So far neither of us have proved anything. I will have proof come next October.

You're pulling things off the internet in order to argue with a guy that is in the navy and appears to have direct knowledge of these past events (drones launching from carriers and destroyers) and future plans. It's actually humorous that you believe that you've proved anything. It seems pretty obvious which one of you has the better information, and it isn't you.

Troop and ship movements have absolutely nothing to do with what we're talking about.

I've made my case for the carriers. I'm not going to further debate about them when you bring irrelevant statements to the discussion.

The Zumwalts primary mission is land attack and fire support. They will all be able to carry out multiple missions due to each being built with the same tech which will be upgraded through their lifespan. Did you not say in post #129 that they will have better air wings than any carrier could have? Unless the Navy is planning to launch fighters off destroyers that's just a false statement.

Are you referring to the Enterprise being decommed? I've known that for a good while now. It's service life is simply up. I don't see how that proves anything.

I actually provide evidence from defense contractor websites and I'm the one that gets called out? That's whats humorous...

I believe we started delving into the movement of said ship and that's why I stopped. Initially our argument started, with one issue, of when the ship was decomming.

You have made your case, so have highly ranked Naval Officers and the US Navy is, eventually, not going in that direction.

Yes in 50 years (your time frame, the Navy's is a bit shorter) it is believed the technology will be there to make Destroyers a launching platform for UAV's. Actually, the tech is there for the UAV's themselves that isn't even the hurdle they are working on right now.

In case you missed it: The US NAVY plans on launching (and already has) UAV's off of Destroyers

The original argument was over the date it was being decommed and the eventual move to make the US carrier fleet downsized to 10.

Yes, because getting info from a site and basing your facts from a company trying to promote its product is humorous.

The facts I presented was from Admiral Roughhead (the CNO) around two months ago.

I enjoy the discussion, but we could argue back and forth for months. I think it's safe to say that time will tell, eh?

I'm well aware of where the Navy is headed. His comments don't come as a surprise and it doesn't prove anything in terms of carrier operations. All it says to me is that the Navy wants to be a diverse fighting force with many assets at its disposal.

The U.S. Navy announced today that the second Gerald Ford class carrier will be named the USS John F. Kennedy.
