We don't want no stinkin' Sonny Dykes....

He did quite poorly at Cal and was just OK at Louisiana Tech. He may have just caught lightning in a bottle this year.
Not to kick the hornets nest, but I've often wondered if Heupel didn't catch a bolt or two himself? Both had the perfect QB for their systems and at just the right time. Everything kinda fell our way this year up until UGA and SCjr. The only way we'll know for sure if we have the right guy is when we can look at a larger body of work/evidence. Look at aTm and Jimbo. Think they'd like a do over? Not saying Heupel is going to turn out like that, but I think some restraint is warranted when it comes to "backing up the truck" for any coach with only 2 years of work and a roster that's not completely his recruits. A raise? Certainly. Stoopid money...nah. Won't go that far.

Sonny Dykes had the benefit of Gary Patterson setting the table for him over the past how many ever years. We’ve had as much dysfunction as anyone over the previous decade before Heupel. Heupel has us built for long term success, Dykes may continue success, but I have my doubts that they can replicate what happened with them this season.

Y’all, a semi-legitimate question remains outstanding if Heupel’s success at UT is derived from benefitting from Hooker who was brought in by Beldar and Co., but it isn’t that legitimate of a question. Heupel put up points at Mizzou in the SEC with Drew Lock and lesser talent. He put up points at UCF and had success (following on the heels of Frost’s success to be sure) there. He then put up points at UT with a roster decimated by transfers. He then put up points against Clemson with our backup QB. And so, I’m pretty sure he’s going to keep putting up points and his recruiting is better than I expected it to be.

Is Sonny Dykes a good coach? For sure. TCU isn’t a juggernaut by any stretch and had languished under Patterson at the end of his career. He also took a less talented squad and achieved more, a national championship game berth is a pretty good indication that he’s doing well. But Dykes didn’t play LSU in BR, Bama at home, UGA in Athens, and so on and his roster didn’t get gutted as badly as UT’s.

So, has Heupel or Dykes done better under the circumstances for each? I don’t know who has done better as there seem to be arguments either way. All I know is I’m very glad we have Heupel and I’m rolling with him and I have no interest in seriously bemoaning whether Dykes would’ve been better.

And then beat an undefeated BIg 10 Champion Michigan.

The soft schedule argument is weak at this point.

TCU is a very good team.
I am hopeful he does well at TCU. A really good TCU could help pull some recruits from Texas and TA&M. Anyway, it makes me think Danny White knows what he is doing.

One game season. Soft
UGA, LSU, BAMA > one game

If anything it exposed how bad Big 10 was too and the media influence. Very good in B12 is 4 losses in SEC, they are last years Ole Miss in 2022

The Big 12 is 2-6 in their bowl games. There is no denying they had a soft schedule. Their conference doesn't match up. They'll win a fluke gane here amd there but overall it's weak conference. You don't deserve a national championship playing that s*** then only having to win 2 games in the CFP. But they won't get that 2nd win.

There's a reason ticket prices are dropping for the national championship. It's going to be a schwacking!! If they fought their way through a 12 team playoff sure. But they already lost their conference championship just 2 games ago.

Welp, he's in the playoffs. Should Tennessee have hired him when he was a leading candidate?
He’s done very welll. Personally I really loke the excitement that CH brings. We are on our way. Our issue is The conference we are in. It’s gonna get tougher.

I am fine with how everything ended. Wish wandering in the desert would not have been as long, but feel we have reached a good place now.

I don’t know. Nobody set up SMU for him and he transformed that program significantly…which surprised me WAY more than what happened immediately at TCU. I think narratives were formed from his time at Cal…which has proven to be a coaching graveyard. In the end, Patterson was spiraling the last half decade with what he left and he didn’t leave Zach Evans.

Given the abysmal and depleted roster CJH inherited, given that Hooker wasn’t that great before playing under Heupel, given that Heupel has turned every QB he’s coached into a highly productive one…yeah, nah. Hooker caught that lightening, not Heup.

Well yeah, but there is merit to soft schedule argument. Michigan had a very soft schedule all year as well, even the committee thought so and was reluctant to place them in the top 4 due to it.

Also if they had a more competitive schedule with stronger opponents, the roster likely would look different from week after week of beatings(despite who the victor is). Also it’s been shown that good teams can be beat any Saturday. It’s less likely to happen when you play against weaker teams. But if you are playing against teams from the SEC that are used to having to step up to the challenge all season, even if they aren’t known as winners, then I believe they stand a higher chance of an upset.

TCU has done great, there’s no doubt about that. But to act like that is justification in saying their soft schedule doesn’t matter is silly. Do you think if TCU swapped schedules with the Vols at the beginning of the year they’d have the same record? If no, then the point is made. If the bulldawgs played Alcorn, middle Tennessee, etc all season long and rolled into the playoffs people would be complaining too, or at the very least talking about it when you have other good teams having to week in and week out go up against strong opponents.

Absolutely not. HE WAS 71-63 in his 12 yrs before this year. He had 5 losing seasons out of 12. Now he would have been better than Pruitt. He walked into a perfect situation. TCU is loaded with Experience, tons of 4 and 5 yr guys and several soon NFL draft guys. I'd bet next season he doesn't win more than 6 games. Gimme Heupel anyday.

Yeah, even though he tailed off at the end, Gary Patterson knew what he was doing. I don’t follow them closely, but I have to think he left some pieces in place.
CSD did bring in like 15 transfers though. IIRC Dykes beat Patterson the last two times they played (SMU vs TCU).

I’ll take Heup. Not only do I love his style, but his generally positive and relaxed attitude is my style. I don’t know a ton about Dykes but I can’t stand watching him on the sidelines. He seems like a spoiled child. I have limited knowledge or experience with him though.

No. He drives me nuts with some of his decisions. They could've been undefeated had he run his QB on one of two plays against K State. Against Michigan he got way too conservative the last 2 possessions and it gave Michigan a chance at the end. Coaching on the Big 12 just isn’t the same as the SEC. We’re good with who we have.
