I can't understand why so many people are questioning Butch and this team. Not one publication picked us to be good, most picked us not to make a bowl game. As fans its hard to sit and watch us lose but everyone knows we don't have the talent level as these top teams. Right now I trust Butch and his staff to get us back to where we are relevant, until then everyone grab a bottle of Jack and be patient

It's hard to take because CBJ did everything right up to this point (not saying he's done anything "wrong" yet either).

He completely aced every test off the field and recruiting has been excellent. Not to mention the team looked disciplined and aggressive against our two cupcakes.

Hopes were high that maybe, just maybe, this staff was full of coaching geniuses and that we could hang with Oregon or even beat them. But getting slaughtered just confirmed everyone's fears: We still suck, and will suck for a few more years until the roster is reloaded with SEC-quality players.

Stop pretending like we should have expected the biggest loss since 1910. No one expected us to be of Oregon's caliber. Most of this board expected a 6-7 win football team. But if you expected us to not even put up a fight or field a team that looked remotely competent, then congrats. But why even bother watching that?

I expected exactly what I saw

What sux is that I am stuck here in MS, 45 minutes from Oxford. The black rebellious landsharks, or whatever they are look pretty good this year.

Is there a radio station that I can stream online that will carry the game? I am in Ireland until Wednesday.

Screw publications. I'm pissed about the 45 point loss. I get it... CBJ is new, we lack depth, blah blah blah. But that does not excuse the way we bent over the edge of the bed for Oregon.

They could have made an even bigger mockery of us on national TV by just continuing to play their game. What kind of loss would it take for you to be somewhat upset? I think 100-14 might have gotten more peoples attention...and that's not sarcasm, they easily could have done it.

Losing is one thing, but losing and calling safe plays...that's my gripe. We lose like an FCS team without taking ANY of the risks that those FCS teams will take to win the game.

Well said OP. Any loss hurts and it's nice to beat the Western Kentucky's of the world but we are about where we should be. I feel a lot better with Butch handling things so far than anytime Dooley had control. We'll get back.

CBJ & his staff are doing a great job. If you recall his first year at Cincy they lost to us badly in Knoxville. Their program then took off. I don't think Tubbs is doing as well there! Our slow defense & lack of a QB aren't going to get better overnight! The staff is addressing the talent needs through recruiting! Go Vols!

i didnt think we bent over. it was more like they bent us over. effort and schemes cant compensate for the lack of talent combined with bad matchups. oregon on any given weekend in autzen can do that to 99% of the teams in the country.

How are so many Vol fans this freakin' surprised at the outcome of UT against the #2 team in the country. Three consecutive losing seasons wasn't a fluke. We lost almost every good player of consequence on offense minus the o-line. Odds are pretty good that Butch will get this turned around. Sack up and quit with the woe is me routine!

It was his second year and they were picked to do pretty well (and did) but year 3 is more impressive. WVU aint the WVU of old but still a solid win and then taking L'ville to OT and barely losing to a pretty good Rutgers team.

I agree that our fan base is irrational and many have unrealistic expectations. Only the truly delusional thought we really had a chance to beat Oregon.

That being said, I think most were hoping for a "moral victory" (I hate that term BTW). The fact that we absolutely got demolished on national TV was a real downer for the positive momentum that Butch has had since he was first hired.

It was definitely a wake-up call about how much of a gap there is between our talent/depth compared to the elite teams.

IMO the most embarrassing aspect of that game is that they were able to put in their 2nd/3rd string at the beginning of the 4th quarter (maybe before?)

All the rampant optimism and homerism of the preseason has now been replaced by the sad reality of our suckiness.

Oh well, GBO!!

I have faith that Butch, this coaching staff, and this team will compete at a higher level this week; and win or lose, even better next week.

Name me one fanbase of any major college program who would not be upset after witnessing their team look like ours did last Saturday.

Name one rational individual (outside of yourself who is being irrational) that had higher expectations of a team that has virtually no QB, 2 average (at best) RBs, no proven WRs, a thin defense with little speed and in a brand new system. Who traveled clear across the country to face arguably the best team in the nation, with arguably the most explosive offense ever assembled. Who was a 28 point underdog (which is Vegas' way of being nice, without saying this team will get their asses kicked). With yet another new coaching staff/system and playing up to 10 walk-ons on the road at Oregon.

The fact that I just had to type this in response proves how foolish and irrational our fan base is.

Of course I'm "not happy". Who is? But what did you really expect?

The overwhelming general opinion of this team all throughout the off season was that UT would be lucky to be .500 this season. Losing by 45 points to the best team in the country is actually more likely than not, given UT's roster situation. Next season could be as bad or worse. Maybe worse, since the entire Oline will be gone.

This is going to take Butch 3 seasons at a very minimum. If you can't be patient, go cheer for Alabumma for the next 3/4 years........

The good news is, I believe we have finally hit bottom. While we've thought that several times in the past five or so years, we're finally there. No where to go but up.

We'll have some things to be optimistic about after Saturday's game. I can feel it.
