We Lost Because

Watched bits and pieces of the game as I passed by at work Sat. Saw 6-8 plays. Unfortunately, three of those were wiiiide open receivers deep down field for TDs. Another was a 40+ yarder to TE for prob not a score. If Hooker hits those, as he has all season, then there are prob 21-24pts right there alone.

The game's gonna take various turns tho. UGAs superior physicality revealed itself. Kirby's D was played exactly as Bama SHOULD have done it. Very solid win by UGA, their coaches, and fans. They exposed us talent wise and had a better game plan that we couldn't match.

Still a great great season.

It was ugly but I dont attribute it to talent level as a whole, Alabama had better talent, LSU had better talent, Florida arguably has more talent, also I dont completely think Kirby went full conservative in the second half, I think the defense adjusted and it was effective, there was no reason they wouldnt have hung 40 on us if they could have, it was way too close a game score wise for them to be comfortable knowing how fast we can score. We had our chances to make plays and we didnt, crowd noise, weather and a stifling defense made it hard but if 3 plays had gone our way its a different game.

This will do our program good in the long term. We went up against the reigning national champs in an incredibly hyped game on the other team's home field. Oh and us getting #1 in the first ranking was the perfect bulletin board material for them. As noted earlier, we've now experienced playing an elite team in its prime. We know what we have to do talent and discipline wise to be on that level.

I'm old enough to remember the Doug Dickey rebuild in the 60's and the Majjor's rebuild in the 80's. (Majors came into a dumpster fire with an unsupportive AD who saw him as a threat. Fulmer got a program ready to do great things.) If Heupel is up to it, we should be in for a great ride.

Georgia had a LOT more 4 and 5 star recruits than we did.

We got swarmed by their talent

Any and all coaches need talent.

Once we recruit better Heupel will be fine.
Georgia has more 5 Stars than anybody. They have been stockpiling them for a few years. Heupel is building it and they will come.

The Vols lost because the other team beat them. Simple as that. It’s not stars. It’s not coaching. It’s not the stadium. They had a prime time matchup and didn’t make the plays they needed to win. This year’s Vols are a really good team that can play with anyone on any given day. I’ve seen too much to think otherwise. They just ran into the reigning national champs that felt disrespected by the media and the UT fanbase this week. Using 1 game to sum up the entire season or the entire state of this program is like repeating history, ignoring the present and refusing to accept the bright future of this program. It’s 1 game. Time to move on and focus on the rest of the season.

#5 is a good QB for sure but the combination of blanking our wr’s and that extra rusher hurt because #5 would have to be Tom Brady accurate and learn on the fly how to throw the ball where his man was going while running full speed to make those catches and on top of that the noise factor. Just my opinion guys. Go Vols

First I want to say that before the season I thought that the worst case regular season was 8-4, best case 10-2. Now, if they control what they can control and win the next 3, they will be 11-1, performing well beyond my expectations, which is great. Having said that, in the first half GA was covering deep routes well and blitzing periodically. I am not a coach, but having watched many years of football it seems that the adjustment to attack this is to go with screens, quick slants and such. Also, I remember early in the season on a few occasions the ran a QB option with a pitch to the RB that got good yardage, but I don't remember them running that recently. It seems like we continued to push the deep game without making any adjustments even though it wasn't working. At any rate, win the next 3 and there is a pretty good chance that we will see GA again. Hopefully the coaches will use this as a learning experience. Rooting for Texas against TCU this Saturday, go longhorns. GBO!!!

I see many saying that they think we will fall out of playoff contention, but I don’t see that. I think our body of work speaks for itself. Even if TCU wins out, Ohio State and Michigan play each other and I think the committee when viewing an 11-1 Tennessee vs an 11-1 Michigan/Ohio State will take us because our body of work is better. And our only loss is to the number 1 team in the nation at their field. It may have been hard to watch, but I really don’t think it hurts us much. We still have a great shot at making the playoff.
I am not as confident in us making the playoffs.

Oregon, who got blasted by GA in week 1, has beaten two ranked teams and has two more on their schedule before their conf championship game. Being a 1-loss conf champion with 5 ranked wins will most likely elevate them above us in the rankings. They have beaten top-10 UCLA and could play a top-10 USC for the Pac-12 title. USC and UCLA only have 1 loss each and are in the top 10. Any of those three teams could end up as Pac-12 champ with 1-loss.

If TCU wins out, they will be an undefeated conf champion with potentially 7 ranked wins (4 already with 2 more regular season ranked teams on their schedule plus the conf title game). TCU could lose a game and still be a conf champ with 6 ranked wins.

A conf championship will carry some weight with the committee, so the PAC-12 and Big XII conference champs could pass us in the playoff rankings as we finish the season against three unranked teams. We need help in the playoff race.

The rain. And exhaustion from playing an actual difficult schedule.

The OL was awful by any standard. UGA's defense shut down the unstoppable offense.
The OL was only bad compared to the highest standard, which is GA. The OL has improved tremendously throughout the year and looked bad against GA because it faced a top DL.

That’s definitely a part of why we lost. But they were also just more ready to play. Uga often shifts around their dline. Not sure why we kept jumping every time we did that. That’s something I’d think our coaches would’ve had us prepared for. And we had a handful of false start penalties aside from the shifts.

Also, uga was dropping a bunch of defenders deep and hoping we’d take the underneath stuff. Kinda “keep the offense in front of you” approach and that’s exactly what we did. We were forced into a dunk and dunk approach all night and that’s just not what our offense is built to do. IMO we needed to keep try to do what we do and not let the completely dictate what we ran. We needed to throw the ball down the field more. Over and over again we’d throw short of the sticks on 3rd down.

Again…our guys just weren’t ready for this type of game. It was really the first time this year I felt like we were soundly out schemed/out coached. I hope we make it in the playoffs. And I hope we get another shot at them on a neutral field.

I don't disagree with the idea of taking more shots, but more often than not the shots just weren't there. Hooker is taught to take what the pre-snap read affords, be it a run play, screen, slant, or downfield shot, and he probably did just that.

Keep in mind that the 'dink and dunk' stuff and the WR screens generally net some big gains and are a huge part of this offense, but Georgia was allowing no YAC due to never missing tackles. Those underneath plays are usually what opens up the deep game. They could afford to play press man with two deep safeties all day and still stop the run game and get pressure without having 6-7 in the box and blitzing. There might be one program that can do that to us in the whole country, and we just played them.

Florida, Alabama, and LUS all had more talent than we do, but it didn't help them. We lost because the game was in Athens and we shot ourselves in the foot with presnap penalties. Looking forward to a rematch.

Listened to Paul Finebaum reviewing the past Bammer defeats with a Bammer, back to 2016. Every loss he reviewed the whining excuses of the Bammers. Bad calls, injuries, on and on. No one ever beat Bama because they had a better team, executed better, had loud fans drowning out calls. Always a not-our-fault whine.

I read this thread, and Vol fans do nor whine or make excuses. We got an ole Southern butt whoopin' by a well coached multi-talented team who was No.1 and reigning National Champs. But we took it like men. No excuses. No whining. Just resolve to beat'em next time. These Vols have heart, more heart than mant Vol teams in recent years. Great team, great year, and it is GREAT to be a Tennessee Vol. Even on a Monday after this loss.

A lot of it was scheme on both sides. Until UT, QBs were getting the ball out in 3 seconds or less, hence 10 sacks. Hooker stood in the pocket for 5-6 seconds, hence 6 sacks. UGA's scheme was different than anything UT had seen on tape. We have faith in our corners, and blitzed from Cover 0. I know UT didn't expect that. UGA had blitzed on 30% of passing downs until Saturday. We blitzed on 65% of passing downs against UT.

I haven’t seen anyone yet reference this.
Leading up to the game there was an interview with a Georgia player who said that they practiced playing against our offense this summer.

Clearly Kirby recognized we were going to be the real threat in the east this year and focused on planning for us. This is the reason for the Kent state and Missouri close games. They didn’t bother to prep for those, figuring that they could win on talent alone.

We on the other hand aren’t in a position to overlook anyone, so have to prep for each opponent.

They were better last Saturday. We lost. All we can do is win out and hope we make the playoffs. If we do that all that will matter is who wins then! The season is far from over. GBO!!!!!

Hooker missed 3 tds. UGA gave us next to nothing but what they did…we missed

I rewatched the 1st half because I hate myself and... honestly there was plenty there in the 1st Half.

The pocket was clean. Routes were good. Hooker overthrew/threw high constantly, even on completions.
