We Need A QB From The Portal

Agree that he should be better now, he is not a freshman anymore, but no QB will be coming in from the portal. Hype's history at TN shows that once he settles on a QB he won't change unless the QB gets hurt. (and remember Hooker only got the job from Milton because Joe got hurt)

Nico just may not be able to run this offense like Hype wants it to run, ie Hooker, so seems to me, they should modify the O to Nico's best skill sets cause he has the job until he leaves.

It is a weird situation. I like Nico and think he can be really good. He is tough and I don’t want to replace him. Of the rest of the better teams this season, how many relied on an experienced transfer qb? OSU, Miami, ND, Ole Miss, Oregon, Syracuse, Texas, and the list goes on and on.

Is the new way to just pick up a proven qb from a smaller school from the portal?

I hate even asking that, BTW.

Tom Brady wouldn’t have been successful last night with our deficiencies on the offensive line and at wide receiver

Even when they hold up he’s bad. He makes them look worse than they are at times because if that first guy isn’t open he immediately hits the panic button and doesn’t even look to find an open guy. You hear how bad our line and receivers are but how many of those guys came from the portal? Maybe our coaches have a hard time identifying and developing talent or maybe don’t put them in positions to be successful. Playcalling has been god awful.

Nico needs competition.
Freshman?
Early enrollee, REDSHIRT FRESHMAN if I’m not mistaken.
Big difference between this and a true freshman.
That would be over 2 years in the system.

Ohio State alum here. I watched several Tennessee games this season. IMHO, Nico Iamaleava isn't the problem going forward. That kid has heart and he's a competitor, attributes that can't be taught. He's a tough, shifty runner as he proved multiple times last night. He'll have had multiple games of starting experience by the beginning of the 2025 season, so the game should slow down. The CFP game experience should accelerate his development. Next season, he should be better & quicker at going through progressions. He'll be a more vocal leader. What he needs are difference makers at WR and better pass protection from the OL. Ohio State has elite WRs -- 2, possibly 4 future 1st round picks on the current roster. Will Howard just had to make sure he threw the ball on time/target and allowed the WRs to do their thing. Tennessee needs a few such players, which will really open up things on offense. WRs need to help out the QB by getting separation -- something that can be taught. Ohio State's Co-OC/WR coach Brian Hartline is the best in the business at developing WRs. Also, the Buckeyes weren't at all concerned with getting beat on deep passes last night; you need that threat to keep the opposing safeties honest. An elite TE (Brock Bowers, Tyler Warren) can help, too.

How much did we buy him for? Do you expect your Ferrari to go x amount of miles per hour immediately or do you have to wait 2 years for it to do that After you bought it?

Last night Nico seemed like the only guy that showed up to play. Ohio state d line lived in the backfield all night and only had 3-4 guys rushing. Receivers were rarely open and had little separation. Nico wasn’t the issue. Need to hit the portal hard for some wr that can create separation and some big uglies up front to protect Nico. Looking forward to 2025. Go Vols
