That Auburn team was stacked with talent and talent that malzhan himself brought in for his system. The two situations are nowhere close to comparable. I couldn't possibly care less if you call BS, there were many people who thought Auburn would contend and be very dangerous last year. Didn't see them playing for the title, but thought they would challenge bammer and the rest of the West.

Mile High, I certainly hope that you're right. But even though I am optimistic (I think we 7 or 8 games which according to some on this site makes me an unrealistic fool), I would be delightfully shocked if we went 11-1. Don't get me wrong, I think we upset some teams and shock some of the naysayers this season, but 11-1 is a wee bit unrealistic with the young offensive line that we have. With that said, 11-1 is a very real possibility in 2015 and beyond. We're on our way back to the top!

It's not terrible to say someone thought they'd "contend"...I mean were he saying that he "called it in August that they'd totally win the conference and play in the national championship," that'd be a different story.

Respectfully disagree. It would have been different if AU would have went 6-6 or 5-7 in 2012. But going from 3-9 to being contenders? If there were a lot of people who thought there would be that kind of turnaround then I want their crystal ball.

I really don't see how anyone could have said they would contend in 2013. New coach, new offensive scheme, unproven QB. Sorry but I refuse to believe anyone who says they thought AU would win anymore than say 7 games in 2013.

New coach? New scheme? Most of those players in that system were his players and played in his scheme. That's the major difference than just about any other coaching change at a program.

The Auburn comparison really isn't a fair one. Predicting Auburn would do that before the season started is one thing, saying UT could win the East after seeing us play three games is another.

well...I agree...it could happen

I am all in w/ this team and I think they are on the brink of greatness.

O line needs to gel a little better but I do think we just played the best team we are going to play this year and were just shy of making it a scare.

Look at the O series objectively...yes Worley got put on his butt way too much, but the guys were moving the ball and successful on several plays...

I think its a matter of time when it all clicks and all 8 cylinders are in sych....

haven't felt this way in a long time.....it aint gonna be easy but at least I see a chance

GO VOLS!!!!!

I think Milehigh is a good name for you, you must be up on something. Have you seen our O-line play? They are very inexperienced, and I am sure they will be good in time, but I think you are talking about next year.

8-4 ? mmm? Just don't see it. I certainly don't see the Vols playing in the SECCG much less winning it and getting selected by the committee. We absolutely would have to run the table from here on out. But you know what?

Thinking about all of this, I realize that at the end of t he season Tennessee might be the most hated team in the SEC. We could be that "disruption" that keeps ANY SEC team from getting in...just sayin'

To answer your question, An SEC champion at 8-4 (9-4 with the SECCG win) would not make it in the playoffs. There will be too many 1 loss teams that would be ahead of them. Even with pulling an upset over an undefeated opponent. There is a possibility that the loser could still make the playoffs with 1 loss though or a 1 loss team that didn't make it to the championship game could take their place just as Alabama did to replay LSU.

Likely only 1 to at most 2 contending teams would hate us for ruining their realistic chances.

How would that make us the most hated?
