A lot of UT fans have turned into UConn fans and they aren't willing to admit it to themselves. They'd be happier if they did.

Deer park who seems to be in the know stated that there were issues in the locker room and if Elzy had stayed then there would have been transfers..... Those issues also could have greatly effected recruiting.... Did they? Who the h&ll knows? None of us know for sure the issues facing the lady vols.... Hope Holly is getting them straightened out.

Any one looking at it without the orange colored glasses on, knows what the problem is.........CHW

Too bad that Elsy is unemployed but results matter. Law and Lockwood should have been let go too, imho

I have no idea either but deerpark is legit and when he says something you can almost guarantee that it is legit.

+++++++++++++++

Friction or not, you got to work together with your staff. The only thing I do know is the timing of the signing by Kumera and the departure of Elzy is too close not to inter-connect.

HW has a recruiter, she now has to get help on the offensive planning, strategy and skill-drills for her kids.

I know most people think this to be the job of the head coach, but it isn't necessarily... It is the job of the HC to win... Not to take on every aspect of the teaching... It is the job of the head of any department to do two things: Get the job done through the employees and to have such a well-trained product that it runs itself.

This is the next step for HW. To understand that other opinions matter and that getting the job done through her staff is essential for her to succeed as a leader.

Law had the understanding that DD needed a sit-down and get her head straight session and it turned her game around. BUT, she didn't followup and DD went back into a downward drop...An Alpha needs an Alpha to continually negotiate the player's emotions. It is as essential to their training as is physical training.

I have yet to feel or hear anything positive re Lockwood. The only time I have even seen this coach is the weak drill posted mid season where they were waving a hand in the face of a driver. This wouldn't even phase a middle-schooler as a drill.

Oh, geez. How would you know? And based on what? She only had a solid game instead of a spectacular one against Syracuse? So what, next season whenever DD doesn't have a great game we can just chalk it up to not having an Alpha monitoring her emotions that day?

But, YES...When she needed it! even the most dominant athlete needs constant monitoring until they can do it on their own. You,ve never seen a coach get in someone's grill or pat them on the back "but once", per season....This is all about coaching effort. It is mental.

Remember Bernie Pachecco (The shot doctor) and Shaquille Oneal... All Bernie had to do was sit in the stands to influence Shaq's foulshot. (though I still don't understand why Bernie didn't radically change the shot itself). Still, his very presence in Shaq's view upped Shaq's FT %-age.

I'm no expert, but you could tell something was going on in DeShields' head this past season. I also believe there was something going on in the lockroom also. To me it seems as if Diamond's Freshman season at UNC was better than her sophomore season. I don't know if the stats will support it, but it just seemed like she was more comfortable her Freshman season. Then things took a turn for the good towards the end of the season, especially the post season. I think she averaged about 20/PPG the last 6 games or so. She also seemed happier and started to gel with this team. I'm expecting a much better Junior season from her. I know she loves to compete and I expect both her and Cooper's game to be much better next season as they will probably train together this summer.

I wouldn't take Deerpark's word as the gospel if I were you. And even if there is any truth to it, all it proves is the inmates run the asylum...

I guess she understands that fans will consider her a bad hire if she can't recruit three or four top fifty players. Looks like they were mostly recruiting three star players at West Virginia and coaching them up to 20 plus win seasons. Harris and Moore are the first three star player Tennessee has recruited in years. I hope it doesn't become a practice because you can't win National Championships unless you have a nucleus of top 20 players.

Didn't you mean to say "TN or HW can't win National Championships with a nucleus of top 20 players".

I certainly would. I have heard from a number of people the same thing. Holly, Law and Lockwood gained a lot of respect from AAU coaches, recruits parents and other coaches in Division 1 with their handling of difficult situations that came to a head this season. Mike Flynn, who hasn't had the greatest things to say about Tennessee echoes this same sentiment.

If Elzy didn't go, a number of players would have from my understanding.

The fact that everyone remains on the team speaks volumes to how Holly handled a season that could've been far worse than it was.

People want to blame Holly for a sinking ship and in reality she keep the damn thing afloat because she handled it like a professional and without alienating any players, coaches and parents.

I guess we'll never know exactly what went on this past season. Trying to motivate spoiled players is one thing and mistreatment is another. Not enough information to form an opinion. If she was a detriment these players should improve dramatically next season and if not maybe we have some players just not willing to work to get better and give maximum effort.

All these girls were are from winning environments. that is why i continually fight the idea that it is them... DD didn't just come hereto team up with Coop. She has won Championships on every level and UT gave her that realm of possibility much more than NC. All these girls have experienced success at the HS level. Or they wouldn't be here......These girls, after their upcoming finals, will be back in the gym working on their game.

Do we have Maserati athletes being driven by a bus-driver... Or did we have a backseat driver who brought the driver to a halt so the driver could turn around and smack her silent?

Time will tell.

Yes, and it's amazing that Elzy had been on the coaching staff for four years and had no problems bringing in great players or "hurting chemistry" until the past year or so. But I'm sure that's just coincidence.

I initially applauded Holly for having the guts to let Elzy go because I thought she was actually looking to upgrade coaching areas where she is finally realizing she has some deficiencies. If this was indeed just a move to appease disgruntled players (and given the unimpressive replacement she hired this might very well be the case) that respect is gone and I'm amazed so many here are defending Holly for it. Well, not really....

What makes reeves unimpressive? I don't have a clue which assistants can make a huge difference bc it is really hard for a fan to know what stamp an assistant puts on a program. I know Bird Auguste is excited about the hire and she seems to be well thought of in the coaching community.... I criticize holly when she deserves it but she is a VFL and I hope she can fix the issues the teams has.... Coaching a dominant NCAA team is not easy or everyone would be doing it. I'm more worried about the lack of recruiting than her coaching.... A coach can grow the more she learns and sees what works and what doesn't.

She is what we lost in Kyra. A perfect hire. One of the few (decisions) I am fully on board with.

Recruiting is essential. An influx of talent can always draw a coach. But a departure of talent can take years to rebuild.

This is not to say a player(s) is more important than a coach.

In a nutshell... You want to build a team, chemistry starts at the bottom... But if you want to win championships, chemistry must be in the top.

Before Holly hired Elzy from Kentucky, she was the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for a team coming off an SEC championship season and an Elite Eight loss to UConn. And Elzy did such a horrible job recruiting at Tennessee that Holly PROMOTED her to the same position she had at UK after three years. Then she suddenly forgot how to recruit.

Meanwhile the program Reaves is leaving has never even been to a Sweet 16 and I see nothing in her resume that suggests she is more qualified for the position than Elzy.

But hey, the Elzy cancer has been removed and the fans can sit back and wait for the McDonald's All-Americans to start pouring in again. While we wait we'll be treated to more poor shooting, lazy passes, and clueless play on the court....

Looking at reaves resume.... Each school she helped was either as good as it had ever been or improved with her on the sideline.... What does it say about a coach when she is recruiting coordinator leaves and after a few years that same team is willing to bring her back in the same position. This is not a bash Elzy position bc she is a VFL who I value as well. Holly is the head coach and it is her job to make these difficult decisions and I support her 100% in making them. I don't know what led to her feeling a change was needed but I hope this makes us a more solid unit. I don't know what Elzy or reaves brings to a team but neither do you... I do know reaves has an excellent reputation in the coaching circles and that makes me like the hire so far.

The thing about recruiting is building relationships. And that takes time. Just because WV landed 3 stars didn't mean she never contacted the 5 stars. I wouldn't be surprised to see some recruits decommit because of her, who may have had WV in their top 3 but went elsewhere.
