GM cars will be considered foreign soon

washingtonpost.com

wow.... just wow, and i thought that the barackstar was going to return jobs to the USA... well the way i see it, most actual foreign companies produce in the US,, IE what Volkswagon is about to start doing in chattanooga. the way i see it, they are investing in the local economy by providing jobs etc, they are the "domestic" company, not one that sends all of their production overseas.

Another question i ask, if it wasnt for the UAW, would it be neccesary to send all those jobs elsewhere?

BO are you listening?

Analysts who study the auto companies and their global operation warn against allowing political passions to obstruct GM's efficiency.

"If we start making political decisions with the auto industry, we're going to be in tremendous trouble," said Michael Robinet, vice president of global vehicle forecasts at CSM Worldwide.

Free cars for poor fuel road rage - BostonHerald.com

ok this is about absurd... AAA membership? really? where will this end, before too long they will be getting welfare cruises? This has got to stop....
So you're saying that you want people to stop taking welfare and get jobs, but you're not happy unless they have to walk miles on end to get to that job? Brilliant. It's not like they get to keep the car for the rest of their life. It's a temporary thing to help them get to their jobs that they otherwise can't get to, especially in areas in with poor public transit.

and you believe that the program is even remotely administered and that the vehicles' use is limited to the trip to / from work?

I'm not sure how it works exactly so I can't say. I'm fairly certain that they would keep track of where the cars were most of the time though. Maybe there's a certain cap on mileage or something. All I'm saying is, if you all want these "freeloaders" to get off of welfare, quit bitching about things that are set up to help them succeed.

Or maybe instead of them being provided with these crappy little cars that probably wouldn't even make it out of the state, you all would like to donate yourselves, your time and your vehicles to carpool them around. That way everyone wins.

You obviously did not read the article because that is precisely what they do get. It says they never have to return the car.

From the article:
“I can’t believe there are no restrictions on how they use the car,” Jones said.

Why would I want to donate my time and services to people I care nothing about? I'm sure you wouldn't donate your time and services.

Well, I gather that you all would just rather them sit at home and live off of your dime then. Glad we got to the bottom of this one.

What do you care how they use it? You think they're going to take it on a cross country trip? You think they have a lot of money to go out on the town?

Except they'd be living off of our dime with the car, and 95% of them wouldn't use it how they should. People on welfare are pretty happy with it a lot of the time. They get a decent chunk of money, foodstamps, blah blah blah, for doing nothing.

If you could actually enforce them getting a job and maintaining it due to the car, then I might actually be for it, but not with the way the system is now.

Well since they've already demonstrated such awesome decision-making abilities... Allowing them to keep the car regardless of what happens is also a mistake.

Oh really? Then tell me how the system works if you wouldn't mind. Two people very close to me work here in Virginia helping these people and I can assure you it's not what you think. They help people on welfare find jobs, help them find transportation, do WEEKLY assessments on them covering everything from their relationships to drug tests etc etc. and eventually help them GET OFF of welfare. There are very strict guidelines in place and they are monitored more than you'll ever know. Oh, and this place I'm talking about has 2 or 3 cars people can use and I can assure you that they barely even pass Virginia's safety inspection. This broad generalization that everyone on welfare are just sitting around, taking money, and doing nothing is nothing more than uneducated people on the subject making uneducated guesses. You may or may not be one of those people, I don't know.

I understand that some might abuse the system, but that's the case in all walks of life.
