We're Not Young...

I've heard the young/depth excuse the last 5 years. How could that possibly be the same reason every year?

I think GA makes a good point. I think some people are upset with the past decade of Tennessee football, which is more than understandable. But this staff has coached 16 games at Tennessee. You can't hold them responsible for what's happened prior.

And thanks for posting something that made me think, "We are young" and making an awful Pat Benetar song get stuck in my head.

Thanks. I'll be humming this all day now.

And Gurley looked anything but horrible to me. He's incredible. I'm not sure where Georgia will end the year, but they will win some football games with that group of backs.

We are Talented, and talented enough to beat anyone in the SEC East this year. We faced a horrible Georgia team yesterday and came away with another road loss. Sorry, but this is eerily reminding me of the end of Fulmer's reign where he couldn't coach himself out of an open paper bag. Yesterday's game was ours to win, but we went in to our "let's not lose the game" vs "let's win the game" mentality.

We have the talent on the field - we just need a group of coaches to provide the leadership and direction for the team to follow.

I think I heard during the game yesterday that we have played 22 freshman this year which is the most in the nation. SO YES WE ARE YOUNG!!

Spot on.. Gurley is at full speed with a few steps. On his TD run if once he made his cut looked like he was shot out of cannon.

Please explain the "let's not lose the game" remark? Are you referring to our 10-0 lead.?Donot think any coach in football would concider that a lead that they could go into a play not to lose phase of the game, expecially with that lead being in the first quarter.

Once his shoulders get squared to the line of scrimmage he is going to get a big gain. He is the best back the SEC has seen in a while.

We do realize that Butch Jones has only coached 16 games at UT. Right?

I wouldn't necessarily rule out Jones making a change at OC. I will admit I'm on the fence big time with him. He's made numerous irresponsible play calls in critical situations. IT'S TRUE!

I think it is impossible to judge the OC given all the glaring holes we have. 2 starting receivers out, the worst o line I can remember ever at TN, and only 1 running back. And the players we have that are not young are Dooleys recruits which include guys from Gainesville Fl not offered by Florida

What's the over/under on how many times in referencing TN the announcers/pundits have cited this teams youth. It's THAT obvious.

I'm more impressed with that guy every time I watch him. He was a man among boys on that field yesterday.

And to think, Georgia has three more guys behind him who could probably start at a lot of schools. That stable of backs is impressive.

In all honesty, I wish Tennessee had a power run game. I love watching teams that can successfully run the football down people's throats.

He did meet his equal yesterday with AJ Johnson.. He blasted everyone he could

You let your frustration completely overwhelm your common sense and ability to assess our situation. To say we're not a young team, while we're rolling with 20+ true freshmen every week, is willfully ignorant. While I share your frustration at our constant, consistent losing, there are reasons why we continue to lose, and being very young and inexperienced is a big part of it.

Here's the truth whether or not you want to accept is the real story.

The Vols are inexcusably young and thin because of Dooley.

Had Worley not missed 3 or 4 drives the Vols win by 7-10 points IMO.

Georgia has best RB in country and possibly the best entire backfield.

Here's proof of UTs "thinness": -Worley goes down, Vols have no one.
-Hurd has taken the job of a senior, if he goes down, there's no one.
-Vols starting multiple freshman on the OL. True freshman, WRs, defensive lineman, kicker, safety, everywhere.

The coaches should know what Peterman's strengths are and use him accordingly. The what ifs should not be focused on the players but rather on the coaches and the calls they make.

every year, every team is "young" at some position---it's a good excuse to use after a loss!

Hooold on there Bobalouie - how many times have the Vols been beaten by teams with less talent on the field in the past 15 years? Answer: Plenty. I like CBJ but it was not Worley's injury that lost us the game nor the youthfulness of the players. Anyone who honestly buys that is making excuses for the coaching staff.

If you're hell bent on being a coaching critic there's no stopping you but yeah, losing Worley absolutely mattered...or did you not notice the difference when he came back?

Not is recent memory or ever has UT replaced both the OL and DL in the same season and played 22 True FR. That is an incredible task for any team

Is this a fire Butch Jones thread?

Nope - but it is a message sent across the bow that our talented players need some consistent play calling on both sides of the field for 60 minutes. It's a chess match and the games cannot be lost in the coaching booth. I like what CBJ has done off the field as much as I have ever respected any UT HC, but it has to translate onto the turf at some point, wouldn't everyone agree?

You are missing the entire point. Our coaches have to call the right plays for the talent on the field. Peterman is not as talented as Worley, but tons of teams won yesterday and every Saturday with less talent than their opponents. And why? Because the coaches did their part and used the talent accordingly. Upsets = Better Coaching
