Wes Rucker on Bruce Pearl

You either motivate players to win or you don't. Whatever reasons you want to say count or don't, the fact is one coach motivated his teams to win a lot and I have seen very few games in CM's tenure where I feel he had a team that he motivated or coached to a win. Pearls enthusiasm showed in his players and teams energy. To say it didn't is incorrect.

If you think about it though charisma seems to be a trait of most successful basketball coaches. Even guys like Jim Boeheim and Kevin O'Neil (when he was winning) whom you don't think of as high charisma guys have a fire in their eyes and an intensity to them that gets the players' and fans' attention. Then there are the examples of most successful coaches like Coaches K, Pitino, Gillespie, Izzo, Stevens, Smart, Self, etc. etc. all seem to be pretty high charisma guys. Martin doesn't seem to fit that bill. I really agree with that point. Not a lot of SEC coaches seem to fit that bill. JMHO.

I posted this before but it just fits so nicely in here...

Their charisma had little to do with their success, but it had quite a bit to do with their ability to attract people's initial attention. Success on the court kept them there. So, it surely doesn't hurt to have charisma to go along with an ability to coach, especially at a place where basketball takes a distant 2nd to football. For the most part, a coach has to win over the fickle "fans" here who only care if/when we are winning. Pearl had to win over a fanbase that had literally not cared for 20 years. Winning immediately sure didn't hurt, but his addictive personality certainly played a role as well.

In the end, winning trumps all though. I'd rather win with a corpse coaching on the sideline than lose with a clown. Ideally, you'd have someone who wins and won't talk you to sleep in the postgame presser.

It doesn't hurt, but it shouldn't be a necessary criterion for our next coach. Like you said, winning trumps all.

The team certainly fed off his energy. But there are many different ways to motivate players. I'm not saying Pearl's charisma didn't help him, but plenty of coaches have won without it.
