Meant UTEP sorry.....trying to chat while figuring out why my Hulu plus keeps freezing lol
Sure they're better off now. He's not there anymore. All the monitoring in the world won't stop a coach from cheating if he wants to, and feels he needs to.
"Floyd, who's currently the head coach at UTEP, said Haden had contacted him and the three-hour meeting "went well." However, he told Yahoo Sports, ''I've neither been offered the job, nor said I'm even looking for a new job."
So he wasn't even offered the job according to this article.
That's a pretty cynical view but if you look at it logically there would be a lot more incentive for Pearl not to cheat this time around. If he cheats and gets caught his basketball career is done. If he doesn't cheat the worst thing that could happen is he has a bad record and gets fired but still redeems himself because he did it right this time. And, also if he doesn't cheat and gets fired for performance he still has a chance to get another job. It wouldn't make sense for Pearl to cheat. One big problem that Pearl has is he is such a people person he has difficulty saying no. When he had the barbecue he explained to Craft that he shouldn't be at the barbecue but let him attend anyway. When he violated the bump rule with the recruit he said to the kid we aren't supposed to be talking but he just seems to have difficulty saying no. I don't think it is that he wants to cheat.
Some may say cynical, I'd say it's realistic. The picture you paint of Pearl is naive in my opinion. Given his long road back to relevant coaching territory prior to his Tennessee tenure, I'd argue he had every reason not to cheat once he got here, but that didn't stop him.
Now what Sampson was doing at Oklahoma and Indiana was flat out cheating and a total disregard for the rules. The thing that stunned me about Pearl's punishment was that he lied and tried to cover it up but he did turn himself in and show contrition. I know the cynical (cncchris33) might say he only turned himself in because he knew he was going to get caught. But, the NCAA should not treat it that way. They want coaches to self report and show contrition. I think Pearl should have been punished but a 1 or 2 year show cause would have probably been more appropriate. JMHO.
I am convinced that UT people advised BP on how to respond to the NCAA and those same people probably knew that there was a BBQ and a prospect was there. What they did not know was the picture's existence. You have to put the entire episode into the context of what Kiffin was doing and the Earps situation. People were worrying about institutional control. BP should not have lied but I'll never believe that he came to it on his own.

No, Bruce Pearl was a basketball coach for 6 years. That's it. No one coach makes a program.

The attorney for the university received a copy of the photo from the NCAA prior to the interview. Several possibilities can be surmised: (1) the way the NCAA works each member is responsible for monitoring and policing their own athletic departments and the NCAA was just sharing evidence with the university and they were not supposed to share it with the coach, (2) maybe it was just incompetence by the attorney and or his office and did not realize the photo was in the envelope or over looked it until after the interview and did not disclose it to Pearl, (3) maybe the attorney called Hamilton or one of his subordinates and disclosed the photo but for whatever reason (it was the summer) did not get a chance to meet with Pearl about it or thought Pearl would just say "oh yeah he was at the barbecue-my bad" and that would have been the end of it. (4) Maybe they told Pearl about the photo and he decided to lie anyway because he felt they couldn't prove where the photo was taken.
Bruce Pearl is Tennessee Basketball? Holy $hit I've heard it all. Pearl would've never ended up at Tennessee if it wasn't for Ray Mears and what he built, he's rolling over in his grave hearing you say that.

The university made the decision to not disclose what it knew to Coach Pearl. The UT attorney was acting in what the administration thought was in the best interest of the University and chose not to try to protect the Coach. By this time the high ranking administration people had a dim view of the coach and let him hang himself. Frankly some were happy to see him go and those people are still there which makes all the talk about him coming back null and void. Those same folks are not that concerned about where the program is now so long as it does not completely tank.lly
