What’s the dumbest recruiting evaluation

Pretty sure Muschamp wanted Hyatt badly but lost the recruiting battle.

An article I read today said sc didn’t offer him. It could be wrong.

Butch did punt on Lawrence. I think bj was all in on JG. He didn’t want another qB here.

Didn't Butch not recruit Trevor Lawrence? Lawrence was a UT Fan?
I met someone from Lawrence’s hometown and he was actually acquaintances with the family and told me what he knew. It matches the consensus here on VN. Lawrence wanted to come to Tn. but Butch did not return the interest or something similar. @perico

Tennessee with Pruitt not recruiting Gibbs or South Carolina with Musky Muschamp, not recruiting Hyatt?
The dumbest recruiting mistake by Doug Dickey was not recruiting LB DD Lewis from Fulton High School in Knoxville. He wound up being All SEC and All American at Miss State in 1966-1967 and was SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 1967. He played for the Dallas Cowboys from 1968-1981.a6c9d52b6b06327bc7cafb1987de4312.jpgDD_Lewis.jpg

Hmmm ... I actually know something about this. I had an uncle who passed away in 2012, that was golfing buddies with DD Lewis. By the time Dickey was hired, Lewis was already committed to Miss State. Dickey and the interim, Jim McDonald went to visit Lewis to try and flip him immediately after Dickey was hired... but Lewis was solid with his choice.

It is worth mentioning that Tennessee was loaded at LB in the mid to late 60's - Paul Naumoff, Hacksaw Reynolds. Steve Kiner. It hurts to miss on such a good local target, but we did okay at LB anyway.

The worse loss for Tennessee, in my opinion, was not recruiting Steve Spurrier. Not only was he a Heisman winning QB but he also really beat the crap out of us as a coach of Florida in 1990s and frankly, kept us from taking over the SEC East like we should have leading to Florida and Georgia passing us up for years as the power of the East.

Spurrier is our biggest miss based on the ramifications of the fall out from it.
