What’s the dumbest recruiting evaluation

Unless Tahj Boyd changes Kiffin leaving USC or Dooley being hired, that recruiting decision had zero effect on Tennessee. Maybe a couple more wins in 2013 assuming Boyd stuck around with Butch.

QB wasn’t the problem from 2010-2013. It was Dooley

Your memory is bad. QB was definitely a problem in 2010 & 2011. Bray didn’t play until after the Bama game in 2010 & beat the traditional weak back end of the schedule. He got hurt in 2011 & missed about half the games in the middle of the season. Came back for the infamous 10-7 loss to Ky & their WR QB. Everybody remembers Bray of 2012 but he wasn’t near that good his entire career. Boyd was a better college QB.

Clemson really wasn’t anything until 2011. By 2013 Clemson was rolling……they had gone 10-4, 11-2, and 11-2. Boyd’s 3800+ yards and 33 to 36 TD’s had a lot to do with that.

How many “top” recruits are going to go to Clemson and keep coming before they become the Clemson of today? Especially when they have a young HC who was basically the WR coach?

Dabo is a good coach no doubt…….however Clemson caught lightning in a bottle and that boosted everything. After Boyd, his stats and their winning……….recruits wanted to come.

No doubt a lot of that is on Dabo……..but without Boyd……..who knows what “would” have happened.

This…
Back in those days, Clemson football was in the gutter. They had just fired Terry Bowden and promoted a young, unproven coordinator by the name of Dabo Swinney to be their interim later permanent HC. TB was solidly committed to Tennessee until Kiffin foolishly told him to go somewhere else. I still remember the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach as I watched Boyd ball out and win MVP in the HS All American game. Of course hind sight is 20/20 but TB was the cornerstone foundational piece on which Dabo built his program on. He carried Clemson in those early years. No one knows where Clemson football would be without Boyd but we all know that those early successes led to Clemson taking over much of the recruiting territory that was once a primary factor to Tennessee’s success.

That was Hunter Johnson I think. Lawrence was never likely… I could be wrong.

My favorite opponent was Jim Donnan and UGA going after Jasper Sanks over Jamal Lewis.
Lawrence was alway a big Tennessee fan and wanted to play here. The problem was our Athletic Department and coaching staff was so bad, he could not take the chance to come here . He would have been a VOL if he was Senior in high school today.

I got him confused with Hunter Johnson, who was the QB we were in it with Clemson the year before.

This article does not refute what some of us posted about Lawrence.
That he wanted to play for UT and Butch told him no…he wasn’t a fit? Yes it does. There are other articles, but this one crystallizes the FACT that HE wasn’t into what Butch was running.

On the plus side, my dad, who dreamed of being a HS football coach, came to UT (from NM) on the GI bill because they ran the single wing. He met my mom and here I am!
Don't take this the wrong way, but I could possibly live with you never existing if it meant that the fun-and-gun and all the 90's Gator goodness happened at UT instead. Then again, I don't know who you are and maybe I couldn't.

Pretty sure Muschamp wanted Hyatt badly but lost the recruiting battle.

Nah, Muschamp never seriously targeted Hyatt.

We can at least give Pruitt (or at least his staff) credit for that one. I don't know how so many teams missed him. It's not like he played for some obscure program. He won multiple state championships and racked up insane yardage, while having one of the best 40 times you could have.

All of these posts are talking players who we wish we had signed. This is one that we were lucky to miss on :

Steve Shipp, WR from Charlotte, NC. In 1996, we had an intense recruiting war with Florida for him. Shipp was a USA Today and Parade All-American. He picked Florida. However, he was redshirted in 1997 and only played in 6 games in 1998 before transferring to North Carolina A&T - where he also rarely played. During his time at Florida, he caught 1 pass for -4 yards.

Thanks Sheik…that’s the reply I expected from VN!

OL was a much bigger issue. I guess a mobile QB gets you an extra win or 2. I’m just saying Boyd instead of Bray has no effect on Dooley being a bad coach.

I met someone from Lawrence’s hometown and he was actually acquaintances with the family and told me what he knew. It matches the consensus here on VN. Lawrence wanted to come to Tn. but Butch did not return the interest or something similar. @perico
Were you at the Piggly Wiggly? People talk out they ass in that scene. 😏

I would have to say our QB play in 2010 was historically CRAP.
Matt Simms was the worst QB I have ever seen at UT. Worse than JG. JG had moments. Simms never did.

QB play sucked every year from 2008-2021 EXCEPT for Dobbs last half of 2014-16 & Brays last year.

Tennessee still ran the single wing and Spurrier was a passer. Neither party was interested because it was a bad fit. Spurrier didn’t hate Tennessee. The offenses were so different that it wouldn’t have worked.

Steve Sloan from Bradley Central High was the other top high school q.b. in the nation that year. He went to Bama and won a national championship there. The U.T. single wing scared him off too.
