A coupke of things:

a 0.500 conference record to start, one nice upset, and a great recruiting class

1. A vastly-improved defense. At least in the top half of the SEC. A defense with our level of talent should never be in the bottom half. A simpler system should help our players' on-field instincts.

2. A solid 3-man rotation at RB. Hopefully Neal, Lane, and Smith or Hill can combine for at least 1,500 rushing yards this season because that would mean we're winning some games.

3. A QB that can manage the game. I really don't expect Bray-like numbers from Worley or Peterman this year. If we can have a more than solid running game and be effective enough when passing, I think we'll be just fine.

Not even close to Bray.. Check the Stats

A defense which can tackle and an offense which can string together a few first downs would be a good start. 6 wins and a middling bowl appearance would be a good season for this young team with a new coach. A great season would be to include an upset over either UGA, USC, or UF. As long as this team improves on a week by week basis, I'm okay with that. If this team goes to a bowl, I see a top 10 recruiting class in CBJ's future.

I got a feeling CBJ does not have the moral victory thought process, or that it exsists in his vocabulary!

Win 8+ including at least one signature win. IOW's, prove he is the coach that can perform above expectations rather than just at them.

I can't wait to upset some people...I don't expect much from this season, and if we win a lot of games I will be happily surprised, but I do expect an upset here or there. This year will be a foundational year...I think shooting for a bowl game (6-6) and winning the bowl (7-6) is within a reasonable expectation for this team. Though we really wont know for sure until they strap on the game day jerseys. So I'm looking for improvement in all areas of the team.

I am going to go ahead and upset some people now.

I am pretty sure Jones will not survive if he only wins 6 or 7 games this year. He has one of the deepest, most experienced OL's in the country. He has young talent at skill positions. He has two returning SEC quality RB's. He has big athletic bodies on the DL. He is thin but has some good players at LB. He has speed and athleticism at DB. He has two kickers that have now been around for 4 years and have some talent.

So let's say he gets only 6 regular season wins... what will that say? It will be the first statement that he really isn't anything special as a HC. UT does not need an "average" or "meets expectations" coach. UT needs a guy whose teams are better than the sum of their parts. They need a coach who can outcoach other SEC coaches then out recruit them too. Six wins says he isn't that guy.

Then we get to next year. That OL is gone. Most of the DL's who will play significant roles this fall will be gone. At least 3 of the top 4 LB's will be gone. He will be down to one SEC quality RB who has played.

If 6 is reasonable this year then surely your top end is what next year? 4? 5 tops?

That would put Jones pretty much in the same situation that Dooley was in last year in '15... win... or get fired. AND he will still have a relatively young team heavily dependent on whoever he signs in the '14 class.

I want the guy to succeed. But this roster is likely to be better than next fall and probably the next one after that. You can wish that Vol fans will be "patient" into year 4 or 5... but that simply isn't realistic. I hope he far exceeds expectations every year.... but my bet is it has to start in '13 for him to have a chance.

I anticipate the same people saying that 6 or 7 wins is "OK" this fall being many of the same who will condemn his "lack of progress" when things get rougher next fall.

In '14 the Vols lose their experience on the OL and the defensive front 7 but really won't be that much more experienced at other positions. UT will be VERY young in '14.

I honestly think 8 wins is reasonable this fall. He needs 3 of 4 OOC games plus Vandy, UK, and Mizzou to get to 6. Auburn should be a toss up at this point that comes down to coaching. He then needs to upset someone. If he is the "right guy" then that is doable.

I just want to see Butch practicing in December. We need to get into a bowl at the bare minimum. 7 regular season wins would be great. Any kind of bowl win is a major bonus to Coach Jones.

All of that makes pretty good sense.

As far as public perception he needs a good first year back up by a huge 14' class. Dooley never built equity with the fan base. Most that kept saying just wait, he needs more time were in denial and hoping he would make it.

I agree his second year on paper looks like a difficult year giving what he will lose off the roster. But 2 things come to mind for me in that season.

1. If he is worth his salt he will coach up what he has and it will be better than expected.
2. Did he build up any momentum from year 1.

He has started out on a good foot with early commits and creating a buzz with the former players and fans. His first true recruiting class is huge tho. He's gonna have to hit it big with OLs, DLs, and LBs to finish out the class.
