What are your pre season thoughts regarding coach Martin...

I found it interesting Martin said post game he intentionally didn't call a single play yesterday. Said he wanted the offense to basically try and figure it out on their own without calling a play all game.

Smart move, in my opinion. Must have been difficult, though, in the first half.

I just feel like there's plenty of coaches who have had good teams, good tourney runs consistently, but don't have a bunch of first rounders to show for it.

Makes things a lot easier if you do though. But to prove your point, look at Pearl (no Pearl vs CCM posts after please), he was very successful and never had a first rounder until the year he got canned.

It just seems that if we get caught in a half court game it takes away from the skill set of each and every player we have, unless its posting hubbs or McRae in a mismatch or an isolation, which we don't do nearly enough. Maymon and Stokes aren't players that need to play with their backs to the basket. They need space and to see the rim/court.

Agree, I think it's why you saw much more running yesterday than last season. And he wants them to push the ball even more than they did yesterday, and I suspect Barton will.

I would say that it was used against pearl in recruiting.

I'm sure it was used against him, but don't know that it hurt him was my point. He still pulled top talent, he was able to pull Tobias Harris after failing to put guys like Duke Crews, Tyler Smith, Ramar Smith or JP Prince into the NBA.

Anything will be used against you in recruiting, I just think winning is more beneficial in recruiting than putting guys into the 1st round.

Anyone think maymon goes pro?

Eh possibly. Probably won't be drafted. He's a Dajuan Blair type of player. Right system and team maybe so. He's intense rebounding the ball. Plays defense. Could work in the NBA even tho he's probably 6'6

I think Pearl's reputation was growing and if/when he had a break through year in the tourney, final 4 or semi's I think he could have become one of the very elite coaches in college...

Recruits need to believe CCM can get them there.

I think the big time recruits feel like they are going no matter who the coach....might make a diff on a few players but shouldn't affect things too much.

CCM needs to make an NCAA Tournament run and the 2014=2015 season will be the critical year since he will have all his players in place and just needs to coach to his players's strenghths.

Martin has a good chance at not only putting both of his 5 stars in the league, but to make them 1st rounders too! That's huge, since Pearl only got one of his 5 stars in the league. If he can continue to develop these 3 stars into players like Richardson and sprinkle a few 5 stars like he has been every other year or so, then I think he will do great here. Pearl was great at getting 4 stars and a few 5 stars, but the thing was it seemed like every other one was a bust or never seemed to develop. To me every player has gotten better each year under Martin, which is a good sign!

He's exactly what the program needs, and will bring the same amount of success Bruce brought to the program beginning this year.

Just wish more of our fanbase would get behind him. I'm sure after this year a lot will.

I can understand the hesitancy after last year.

What people forget is that Tennessee should have been a tourney team last year and got the screws. Then we played like **** in a meaningless NIT game.

Nobody cares we lost our best player going into the season and we had a bad two months of the season.

It is what it is.

The recruiting is solid and getting better. He's already changing up his coaching philosophy after two years because he saw he needed to adjust.

This is what I look for in a coach. Hell, it took Bruce 4.5 years to change his style and that took four players getting suspended.

I love the motion offense. But I am struggling to understand why we wouldn't set up a few offensive plays. I appreciate the "just go out there and play basketball" mentality, but it is mildly concerning that we don't have some different offensive sets to start working on. IMO

We do. Martin purposely didn't call plays because he wanted to see how the players avoided the offense stalling without a play call. Last year when we were one opposite end from Martin we struggled some on offense, he's trying to avoid that this year.

I hope your right. Our play calling, especially when setting up a play after a time-out has left a lot to be desired. I know this isn't CCM's strong suit, but I hope we are a little more creative in setting up plays to get guys open.

I hope this doesn't sound like knit picking, cause it is just an observation.

We do have sets. Oftentimes, the set it to take time off the clock, walk it up, then force a pass to the wing. Other teams or players know you can't make that set until you get the ball on the wing, so they fronted the pass and we'd continue to stand there. Really frustrating. Saw the same set a couple of times Saturday, whether it was called or not, then we make that pass down to Stokes with his back to the basket.
A few items on that particular set, which we run too often:
-Trae getting the pass or handoff to the wing last year led to too many turnovers or too many last second shot launches because the defense knows we have to start it on the wing and when they stopped it, we couldn't do squat
-If/when the wing did get the pass, it appeared that our wing guys were incapable of making a good pass to the post. We tried it Saturday and had multiple turnovers.
-If/when the wing did get the pass, too often, another player would come over to the corner. That just brought an extra two arms and hands to double team or block passing angles.
-Stokes isn't as good of a player with his back to the basket. He has great vision and a good first step and that takes both away. The cross court pass to the wing will be open with rotation, but Stokes will oftentimes see doubles by taller and longer players, which makes that pass really difficult.
Obviously, I don't care for that particular offensive scheme and really don't care for our version of the motion offense many times. Too many wasted passes too far from the basket that don't really do anything accept possibly cause a turnover. I hate seeing us run that to run some clock, then go to an offensive set and get a poor or no shot.

Win or hit the road and when I say win...i mean Sweet 16 or Elite 8. If he fails this season, we are wasting time on this dude.
