Mine was the Mercury equivalent...a 1987 Mercury Topaz. The year was 1994, and it was a piece of crap. But it was my piece of crap.

Why?

long story short; seat configuration caused back pain. An ongoing problem with me and Toyota products.

fortunately I bought it right and got my money back on the sale (except for the sales tax/buying costs)

So that's what caused the Pinto gas tanks to blow up.

If I remember correctly (I owned a 76), in was from screws pointing towards the gas tank and in the event of a rear end collision, the screws were puncturing the fuel tanks. A fuel leak + sparks/hot surfaces sometimes led to a BOOM!

'93 Jeep Cherokee...I still miss that thing. The only real 'downside' was it had 4 doors, and most of my high school pals had 2-door pickups, so I ended up being the default wheel man when a larger group of us needed to get somewhere. The silver lining was the 'my vehicle/my music' rule...my buddies became well-acquainted with Zappa, Pink Floyd, and Jethro Tull...
