The success of A&M's defense has been limiting gains on 1st and 2nd downs, and forcing 3rd and long, where their pass rush can shine. Very similar to our defense, in that aspect.
So I'm dubious about starting with a running play.
The Neyland home advantage is no secret, so taking our crowd out of the game early would be a strategic win worthy of a gamble. My biggest fear is a D lining up in a way that invites us to throw the quick screen to the WR, but the CB penetrating to jump the route for a pick-six.
So if our first possession faced that situation, I'd look at faking that pass, while the blocking WR releases downfield on a go or deep slant route, depending on the safety's position.
But maybe a safer opening play would be that pretty play S.Carolina ran against us, where the QB faked the jet sweep running left-to-right, looked downfield left, then hit that jet sweep receiver on a screen pass to the right.
I feel sure we're gonna see that play against A&M's defense sometime Saturday.
