What does Jones have to do for you?

I agree with just about all you say with the exception of number of wins this year. We have talent and better coaches. CBJ has a history of over achieving and I just think he will get the most out of what he has.

I am hopeful, just not expecting it. Anything can happen and I sure hope it does! He does and has overachieved but given our schedule 7 wins is overachieving and 8 wins would be sick overachieving! Jmo though.

I agree with the 2nd part of the sentence but other than getting Central Michigan ranked (24th or so) what exactly have his teams done to over achieve?

Getting Central Michigan ranked, beating Michigan State, winning conference championships four out of six years, and being recognized as coach of the year is not to shabby. I realize it's not the SEC but his accomplishments in any conference is something to take notice. What really impresses me, above his accomplishments, is the excitement in the players, the way he is recruiting, and former Vols supporting Jones. He is not a miracle worker but I just have a gut feeling he will surprise some fans even next year.

I understand your perspective, I guess I am just a little more optimistic. Hope I am correct! I keep thinking last year we were in a lot of games, despite that horrible 3-4 defense of Sal, and just ran out of gas. I really think our defense will be better this year and running out of gas will not be a problem. The offense is a question mark but we have better talent than most people think.

I think it changes year by year. This year, I don't really care what the W-L total is at the end, as far as in my evaluation of Butch is. I want to see us play 4 quarters of competitive football against Oregon, Florida, and Alabama. I want to see us win effectively against the teams we are supposed to. And I want to see a disciplined team that knows what they are supposed to do.

Basically, I want Butch to get us our respect back on the field. We are not respected or feared, nor have we been in the past 3 years.

Actually, we have been on a slide for much longer than that. In the past ten years, it seems the Vols have taken 3 steps backwards for every step forward. As to the team being a disciplined one, I hope you mean off the field as well as on the field. Fulmer, Kiffin, and Dooley all failed to reign that in, and I feel it affected on field performance. No, I do not expect that during the Butch Jones tenure, there will be 0% trouble. These are young men, and the testosterone gets out of control at times. However, I feel if the program is going to be a great one, these young men need to represent the university in a positive manner, or hit the road. I don't care if he is the designated bench warmer, or the most complete player on the field. They just don't need to use or sell drugs, commit armed robbery, petty or grand theft, sexual assault, or drive under the influence. Is it too much to ask that these young men NOT embarrass not only themselves, but the university as well?

Actually, working miracles might be in Butch Jones bag of tricks. When the search was going on, I had a top five list for coaches I hoped we could get: Petersen, Patterson, Strong, Gruden, and Gundy. I had no idea who Butch Jones was. From the moment Dave Hart introduced Jones to now, this guy has impressed me, and I am the guy who had all but given up. My only hope was for the Vols players who aspired for the NFL to get on a team, and do well. Now I believe that the program has a coach that is the closest thing to raising Robert Neyland from the grave.

Remember what we were all asking Dave Hart to do on this hire? We wanted a home run hire. This isn't a home run, it is a grand slam in game 7 of the world series. I am as sure of this as I have ever been of anything in my life, people. I have every confidence that when this season gets here, whether we win or lose, every team the Vols face this season will never forget how hard these guys played. I know we are going to be damn proud of this team.

No we don't. We lost all the playmakers on offense and return the one of the worst defenses in SEC history fully intact. Against some of the lesser teams we may be able to overcome lack of QB play by simply handing the ball off and allowing the veteran o-line to do most of the heavy lifting, but not against the top tier teams in the conference. Last year was UT's best shot in a long time to beat UF and it may be a couple more before we really have a team that is capable of competing with them.

You do realize that we landed several recruits that can do what Hunter, CP, and Zrog did as far as RECEIVING goes. CP was electrifying with the ball in his hands, but the highlight plays he had were on reverses or very simple routes/catches for a D1 WR. These guys might not have the same ability to do what CP did after the catch, but guess what, we don't know yet because they aren't even on campus or weren't playing Saturday. Something tells me though that North,Jenkins, Harris, Pig, Croom, etc can make a few plays of their own.

Doesn't do a bit of good if they don't have anybody that can get them the ball. I agree that there may be some athletes on the team who can somewhat fill the void left by Hunter and Patterson. There isn't anybody that comes close to what Bray brought to the table. He will be our biggest loss.

ive been a fan of this team win lose or draw for 45 years ..And ive seen them all in that time frame...my post just reflects that i just wouldn't be getting my hopes up is all...

This is not a jab at you but why is there a rampant fear that Vol fans are going to undergo a psychological catastrophe if our team doesn't win it all year one?....or two, three or four? We have the ability of sight so we're covered...No crying on the floor of showers. We just want to see our players properly taught, competing and learning from mistakes while improving. The past three years our Vols have gone forth each game and fought...tired by the end of the game both mentally and physically, they quit...I don't think we're going to see that...So one step at a time...Don't worry about us fearful humanitarians:aggressive::good!::yes:

That is what this is all about really.
Is he giving us something to believe in?
Does he have the players believing?
Are our commitments buying in?

Yes!!!
Yes!!!
Yes!!!

Does he have to continue to build on this?

Yes!!! Without a doubt. :yu:

The truth is we want to believe he is leading us out of the dark years and returning us to, if not glory, at least to respectability. We have been down for so many years that we want to grab on to anything that appears to be giving us the ability to be proud of who we are without suffering for it.

That said I BELIEVE!!!!!
I BELIEVE THAT CBJ IS THE ONE.
I BELIEVE THAT OUR PLAYERS BELIEVE.
I BELIEVE THAT OUR ALUMNI BELIEVE.
I BELIEVE HE WILL BUILD A FENCE AROUND TN..
I BELIEVE BRICK BY BRICK, VOL BY VOL WE WILL RISE TO THE TOP!!!!!
I BELIEVE!!!!!

DO YOU!!!!!

I'm with ya Greg.

So far, so good. I have heard CBJ and several of his staff speak and they won me over big. There just seems to be something different, something better here. He's not just a snake oil salesman that I want to believe in. (Though I may be an easy mark because I want to believe so bad.) I think that's why the "He gets it" thing has been said so many times. You don't just hope it you can feel it. 6 wins and a bowl win I'm a little scared. 7+ wins and a bowl win would make me happy - for now.

Be consistent, Keep recruiting, and get some DTackles that are game changers. The talent level, particularly in the terms of 2nd and 3rd team depth on this team is non exhistent. Playing 8 2012 bowl teams this year with a new scheme, that will take a year or 2 to understand and 2 to 3 years to have players who fit these new schemes will make winning games very very difficult for a year or 2.

This is Tennessee. A coaching hire is only considered a good one once they win an SEC championship.

This but n today's world of everyone being avg n teaching our kids its ok to be second volnation has become a group of 7 wins n they feel the program is back...

With the right hire we should be competing n year 2 will we win it maybe not but the best coaches prove they r championship caliber n that second year...

2014 sched is alittle easier than 13, with bama and fl at home....but with losing pert near all of our trench boys 14 looks tuff.

Agreed. The second year will be important. Pretty much any coach who succeeds these days in the SEC, wins at least 9 games in their second year. If Jones doesn't, I'll be very surprised if he succeeds long term here.

Well it took Johnny Majors 7 seasons to turn the Tennessee program around(9-3 in 1983)

If he keeps us steady 8-9 wins and we get to the SEC champ game in year 5 or 4 he will be an excellent coach for me and I know we are Tennessee but we got to look at the landscape of CFB today, I'm excited bout the excitement of CBJ hungry attitude.. He just has to keep it up when things go good and when they don't....

For me to consider this year a success, I'd want a full 4 quarters of effort in every game, a bowl bid, and to be competitive in that bowl.

That being said, I would already rate Jones a good hire, and really expect he will turn into a great one.
