I hear all this talk about Jacob carter and Pig howard being considered for Punt/Kickoff returns. I thought Devrin did a decent job last year of the same. Just wondering whats going on with this.

Asked if he’s identified the team’s punt returners, Jones didn’t bother with coach speak.

“No,” he said. “I’m very concerned about who our punt returners are.”

Jones pegged junior wide receiver Jacob Carter as the forerunner, but during practice was heard yelling, “We’re seeing who can catch punts. That’s all we want.”

Classifieds are in section E. Check for an ad.

Among the troop of candidates, Pig Howard, a sophomore receiver, is working on both punt and kickoff returns.

“Right now we’re rotating, but I believe by the end of spring he’ll make a decision on who is starting,” said Howard, who admitted to preferring kickoffs.

As for his offensive standing, Howard said, “End of the day, my role is as a slot receiver.”

I like the thought of Pig returning kickoffs/punts. I'm not gonna pretend that I think Devrin is better at this position. At the end of the day, you've gotta trust your coaches.

I'm ready for the season to start, Go Vols!!!

Apparently Young has fumbled a couple of punts.

Carter will catch anything you put infront of him........

Hey, too all the arm chair coaches who laughed at the idea of Carter getting alot of playing time....

Who's laughing now?

I remember Carter and Worley practicing with the second team last season and making some noise. Wish to see it this year. I know Carter has earned that scholarship. Way to go young man.

I remember Young's first Kickoff return. He almost took it home.
He was very close to scoring a touchdown on 2-3 different occasions as well, IIRC.

Butch would prolly be the guy to tell this story too, imo..

I like Devrin at that position, but I'm also aware that that i'm not a coach at UT.

He had problems judging the trajectory of the punts all last year. Constantly made me think he was going to give the ball right back.

If you are defining decent as average he was rockingly decent. I wish someone would admit that Devrin was just ok not exceptional or a game breaker. "Decent"
meaning he's probably better off in another role. Nothing against him, but to say he's the best we've got on the roster is stretching.

no one gets anointed under CBJ nor should they. I got the impression DY who is merely mediocre thought he was heir apparent. Not

I think most of that went on at the thought of him being a big role WR. That has yet to be determined. I'm all for whoever can catch the ball and sometimes make some noise at punt returner.

I'm interested to see some video of the guys trying to catch the punts with a rolled up towel under each arm.

Foreman is another guy I see being a solid punt returner for us once he's on campus. I think Young just isn't a huge threat back there, and CP proved we are capable of so much more on special teams with the right guy back there.

When I was at practice a few days ago Young was dropping punts like the ball was covered in grease. I personally watched him drop 7 of 10. He looked like he was snake bit for some reason. No one other than him had one on one time trying to catch punts that I saw. Coach Gil was with him trying to help him out. Something is askew...

Folks - it's a long time until August. Many things can be worked on individually over the rest of the spring and summer, including guys getting their heads right. When fall camp starts it will work itself out.

Why does a guy like Carter have to prove anything to any fan? The guy is just a good football player, period. He slipped through the cracks in recruiting from HS and UT is the beneficiary of his personal desire to be a Vol. The thing I really like about Jones is that he doesn't care how highly rated you are coming out of HS. He wants guys to get it done on the field, where it really matters. Who knew Travis Kelce before he developed into the one of the very best TE's in college football at Cincy? Jacob is one of those type of guys at his position. In the end, so could DY at slot or returner. It's up to him to get it done. Jones will lay out the path and give him the chance.
