What Happened to the Affordable Pickup Truck?

A Colorado or Canyon of today has about the same size and capacity of a Silverado/Sierra from 15-20 years ago. You can get 7000lbs towing with the V6 or roughly 7700 lbs with the diesel.

My complaint/issue is that there is very little price separation between a mid sized truck and a full size.
Almost bought one of the four doors.

Bought a Pilot instead.

I've got a 2008 F250 supercab 4x4

I love it. It's deleted and tuned. MPG shot up when I did the deletes and tuned it.

I let go my 86 S 10 last year,I rebuilt the motor in it,when I first got it and drove it for close to 15 years, put around 100 k miles on it

I upgraded to a car that I couldn't refuse the deal on,the price was from a friend and it was a major upgrade

the truck had some problems, like a burnt valve and some other stuff

now I wished I had of kept it and fixed it :) I miss that ole truck

Bought an '88 S-10 in summer of 2000 liked it ok. Fall came and I couldn't get up my driveway with a rick of firewood. That was that. Instead of getting another truck I got a used Expedition which, at that time, was pretty much a tricked out F150 with a built on camper top, and a Coleman camper. Wore them both out, rebuilt and did it again. Good times. Get the wood delivered. Never did get a utility trailer, but it's really cheap to just rent one or a UHaul for the few times I ever needed that kind of space. I like the SUV better than a truck. Load up the fam, hook on a boat or camper and :) :) :)

Drive it until you can't fix it. In retrospect I wish I'd kept my old trucks rather than getting another.

That's definitely the plan. It's roomy for a 4 door mid-size. No issues and maintenance and insurance is cheap. I just wanted the 4 wheel drive and power of the ram. I plan to buy a boat soon and a little worried about boat ramps. Will probably get a bryant which is about 3100 pounds.

Get you a 3rd Gen Ram with a Cummins, it'll last forever.
I have a Bryant Cuddy and you can't even tell it's back there, even on the ramps.

I bought a 1996 f250 4x4 with 109,000 miles about 5 years ago. It's been the most reliable truck I've ever owned. I gave $7500 for it and wouldn't take that for it today.

If I had to buy a new truck today I don't know what I would buy? Fords have crappy engines, Chevys nickel and dime you to death (I also have a 2014 Silverado), Dodge has front end and transmission issues, Nissan has Weak rear ends and Toyota is fighting with a coil issue on their full sized trucks.

99 Sonoma with 102k. Still runs good, the air conditioning system blows out air from every vent no matter the setting. Heat will burn your hands if you leave then next to the vent for any time. Had to replace most of the coolant hoses. And it don't want to go into 4 high. Damn automatic hubs. Hate them.

01 2500 Cummins 6 speed high output with 315k and original clutch. Only thing I've replaced is the vp44, lift pump (suprise), and MAP sensor. I keep saying I wasn't 1,000,000 out of it, but I'm afraid the body will rust apart before then.

It's a 5.8 with a 5 speed. It looks brand new. The wheel wells aren't rusted out like most of them are. Single cab. It's the HD model and rated to tow 10,000lbs.

I was looking for a diesel but could only find ones with an automatic transmissions. Those E40D's are a rebuild waiting to happen. When I saw the miles on this one I couldn't pass it up.

This article is pretty good. Trucks today are awesome and ridiculous at the same time.

What Ever Happened to the Affordable Pickup Truck? ? Feature ? Car and Driver

Two words.

I prefer the term concrete cowboys myself.

The 351 is a good engine as well. I love that body style of the f250 the most.

Btw, it will haul more that 10,000lbs. :)
(We worked ours pretty hard on the farm)

I believe it. I had a gooseneck loaded down with cedar logs and it was really heavy. I pulled it to the saw mill at about 30 miles per hour but it pulled it.

Bought a "new" truck last September ... A 2016 that some business had bought it new in July and turned it back in with about 1500 miles on it. Rubber mat floor, no cruise control, only AM/FM, extended cab but no jump seats, 6-speed manual and 2.5 4-cyl Chevy Colorado. Got a virtually new truck for less than 20 K, but had to shop/haggle hard to swing it. For a mid-size truck, pretty good mpgs, and no, I don't need to pull anything with it.

Having said all that, I really wanted the GMC Canyon with the small diesel, but north of $40 K ... just couldn't do that.

I drove one of the five cylinders to Washington DC once and thought I was gonna get killed on the interstate. I hear the four cylinders are much better. Sounds like a good buy.

40k for a canyon feels insane.

Picked up a 2009 GMC Canyon last year for real cheap. I-5 is a good engine with decent gas mileage. Manual windows and locks, but I installed a new CD player with Bluetooth for like $150. Very useful truck for everyday use as long as you down need to haul anything too heavy. Heck, I towed my buddy's broken down and lifted K1500 to the shop with it! Looked funny as hell though. New trucks are out of control expensive and definitely not worth it.
