What Happened to the Affordable Pickup Truck?

My first truck was a 98 f-150. Black, automatic transmission. manual locks and windows. I beat the hell out of it. Replaced the tranny after 150k miles (I drove it really hard when I was young) replaced the engine after 250k. It's beat to hell, stero and AC do not work. My dad still has it and we use it when ever we need to haul or pick something up. If I ever have 25 grand to waste I'd fix it up and make it my full time vehicle. I love that truck.

Meanwhile, Chevy is releasing a Colorado variant that STARTS at $42k.

Brilliant.

Ford should really keep the Ranger as a small, cheap truck instead of chasing the Canyonado and Tacoma. That's not the plan, of course, but I think there's a good market for a cheap dump run/furniture moving/canoe hauling truck.

My problem is I still have an eighties mentality toward price vs mileage. I look at pick ups today see a 2010 Ford Ranger with 155,000 miles priced 5-6 k I'm like....that's ridiculous. The markets flooded with em, i'm not lucky in finding good deals.

Best bet is to knock on the door if you see one parked in someone's yard.

They price them high because people will pay it. I'd be happy with an old 5 speed-equipped S-10.

Fyp. My S-10 gave up on me this summer and I found an 03 Mazda B3000 with 88k original miles. V6 auto, added the Alpine stereo (aftermarket) out of the Chevy, caught some Pioneer speakers on sale and I'm a happy camper.

I don't know man. Drives me nuts how no one is willing to touch it.

You would think with the way attitudes are shifting (downsizing in homes, vehicles, etc) at least ONE manufacturer would have something in line to try to build out a small, efficient, and affordable truck.

At the lowest rung of the spectrum is the Mahindra Gio (India). I believe that they've abondoned the project to make a light truck for the US market.

A few years ago UAZ, a Russian company was going to sell a cheap pickup in America. That never happened either.

Let's face it, Americans like their cars larded up with all manner of bling and dookie.

Figured I would bump this thread since we were talking about affordable trucks. I just finished up my old Dodge Power Wagon.

1978 W150, 72k miles on it. Slant-six, 4spd 4x4.

You want to talk about affordable, I prepped and painted it with tractor paint. Massey Ferguson grey using spray cans... The prep work is what makes the difference in a paint job. Unlike someone spray bombing their truck with cheap camo paint, this tractor paint will last and is very durable. I guess with all supplies I spent about $200 dollars and a ton of man-hours prepping the old truck.

I think it turned out ok. This truck will be a farm truck and something I can drive to work when I feel like it. Just could not see spending $3k plus on a paint job for a work truck.

Be Safe,

I'm delighted that you are using the truck for what it was intended to do!

My first truck was an 88 Chevy S-10. Bought new for somewhere between six and six and half grand. Rubber floor, stick, vinyl bench seat, AM radio only and no AC. Got me around just fine.

I bought a new '89 Ranger with the same lack of luxuries. Still drive it when it's cool out. Window sticker is still in the glove box. $8274.00 297,000 miles.
