If your son played at UT and was offered $300k more (and more playing time) to transfer to another school, how would you advise him?
I would tell him to do whatever he thought was best. If he decided to leave, then I would respect his decision and hope that others did, too.

And I wouldn't argue with anyone who thought he had forfeited his right to call himself a VFL.

I'll be honest. I have a hard time thinking of a player as a Vol "For Life" when they couldn't even stay a Vol for the duration of their eligibility.

But maybe that's just me.
These athletes have more on the line than just their fandom. Moving on may not be what they want to do but what they need to do.

Maybe it is simply better NIL deal when they know their family needs the money. Maybe they are stuck behind an absolute star and realize they can make an impact elsewhere. Or a multitude of other reasons ine could easily think of with little effort.

Those valid reasons dont mean they won't always have a soft spot for the school amd trammates they are leaving.

If you have ever had a job; loved the company you worked for & the people you worked with but left for another job that paid enough to offer your family way more security; you will always have a connection to the people & institution you left. I still smile every time I drive by the " Stoney Point Shell ", my first job. College Sports is a business & these kids deserve the same respect as we do, though I usually hate when someone enters the portal, especially when they end up playing for one of our rivals.

I understand all of that. I think most fans do. I still wouldn't call any of them who leaves a VFL.

So what do you call guys like Hooker, Bru, Pili, just to name a few?

Lemme guess, it's not where you start but where you end? Such a weak take to be critical of those who leave and embracing those who left other teams.

I really don’t like the fact that a player can change teams for any reason at the drop of a hat. There are several reasons but the 2 big ones are money and playing time.

If I’m honest, I don’t like the fact that any coach can change teams at the drop of a hat as well,

How can you criticize players when coaches are doing the same thing.

It’s similar to the work force issue today. Who is at fault, worker or employer?

Frankly it’s a lack of commitment on both sides.

I’d tell him to do what he feels is in his best long term interest. If that means taking the money and leaving, then do so without trying to have your cake ant eat it too with a disingenuous social media post about your love and devotion to the coaches and players and program you just left

Sure. But I understand that the post could possibly be 100% sincere.
Disingenuous posts ------ thumbs down.
Sincere posts --------- thumbs up.

Yeah, I'd say it's where you finish. Does that not make sense? How do you announce you're no longer a Vol and still claim to be a Vol...For Life?

Maybe I just have more reverence for the title of VFL than some others. It doesn't make sense to me that Al Wilson and Henry To'oTo'o could both be called VFLs. No offense to Henry, but c'mon.

I'd say the portal giveth and taketh and faulting a man because he did what he felt was right for his career or family is not my style.

Again, can Hooker be a VFL when he didn't start here? If we go all the way this year and Nico decides to go to Oregon or something, we disown him despite the ring? Jeremy Banks never left but I'm unsure the turbulence he brought in the locker room earned him a VFL.

If a guy isn't a problem, puts in the work, taps the sign, and leaves it on the field..... I'll leave the VFL on him because he earned it.

I'm old enough to remember Peyton Manning returning for his senior season even though he had already graduated because he loved being the Vols QB so much. Different time, and different circumstances, being the Manning family, but I loved that!

My son's both played football and neither would ever leave Tennessee if they were on the team. So I'm not a good one to ask
My son did as well - Huge Vols fan.....and GA Tech. Bigger Vols fan in all things sports related.

I'm of the opinion that everyone has a price.

100% depends on whether the staff indicated they would be better served to move on. We are still a couple of guys heavy for the fall. So it is probably a mixed bag. Very few simplistic absolutes in this space, with the portal windows. We have not been hit by the plain money grabbers you see in the portal news.
