What is our record with Wilcox?

And that D only gave up 10 points with 7 of those coming on a gift from the ref after Ky fumbled and they didn't overturn it. The defense didn't lose that game. The offense no showing yet again did.

I'll take a D that gives up only 10 points all day long, 365 days a year. Hell, if we had a D that only gave up that many points this year we would've won most of our games going away.
Facts are wasted on this board. Wilcox was a damn fine DC with the talent he had in the secondary to work with. And I absolutely can't blame the guy for jumping out of this dumpster fire while he could.

Defensive Scoring Statistics:

2011: 271 total points scored against UT in 12 games
22.6 points per game scored against UT

2012: 370 total points scored against UT in 10 games
37.0 points per game scored against UT

In other words, through 10 games, UT's defense this year has given up 99 more points than last year's defense gave up all year. Wilcox had younger, less experienced talent and, IMO, just less overall talent. Sunseri is plain awful. UT has the talent to be a mid-level SEC defense and has turned in what will be the worst defensive year in UT history. Coaching matters plain and simple.

I agree - I think the Washington defense is much improved over last year and the year before. Give that Washington staff another year or two and they will be competing for the conference title imo. If Dools, Hamilton, Hart, Cheek, whoever --- could have managed to retain the defensive staff we had last year -we end up 10-2, or 11-1.

That was actually a very good staff and it should be evident by where they landed after leaving. Places like Alabama, Washington, etc.

To be replaced by unproven DC's and coaches from places like the Citidel, etc. What could go wrong ?

While we are at it - let's introduce a completely new defensive scheme - even though we don't have the personel for it.

A series of unfortunate events

I believe the Vols would have been no worse than 8-4 with Wilcox. My question is, was getting closer home his reason for leaving? I say no. He left the west coast to accept the position thinking he would be a part of something special in helping rebuild a program into a title contender but soon realized Derek Dooley couldn't get it done.

When the new coach comes, a full clean sweep of the coaching staff will most likely happen.

After some further deliberation, if Wilcox had stayed, even his defense from last year gives this offense 4-7 more possessions/drives per game. That means more points, fewer points for opponents = more wins. The horrendous defense has been the difference in every game.

This is why there was so much confidence in this team, going into the season and through the Florida game. What a shame to see the season swing in a completely different direction. But this is what losing to KY and putting yourself on the hotseat does.

Losing 80% of his staff made Dooley dead in the water. His ability to find quality replacements for those that jumped ship, just dug him a deeper hole. This is precisely why Hart should have cleaned the slate in last December-January. Usually you want to show due patience, but sometimes you have to strike while the iron is hot.

I think Wilcox leaving is the best thing that happened to us. Cause if he had stayed we wouldn't have known the true Dooley

So winning games is bad if it results from a CEO type of HC having good coaches around him? Losing is bad because a coach has been "revealed" due to a terrible DC?

Maybe.... but I would probably keep the O staff that's producing 38 ppg and almost 500 ypg.

much of it anyways. Graham and Pitman seem like no brainers. If the new guy is defensive oriented then perhaps the whole O staff merits staying. Would definitely save on some buyouts

Well there's a lot of people who have a say in this process, particularly the ones bank rolling the buyouts and new coach. My guess is that there wasn't enough support to make a change last year and furthermore we were not likely in a position to start working the Gruden option.

Fire everybody. Offense has not scored when they needed to. 7 points in the second half against Mizzou :eek:lol: . Should not need overtime. Only 20 on Florida. The 13 on Bama was at least an improvement on the 6 from last year (until you consider the talent on last years offense compared to this year). Wilcox and his D lost the same games as this team. No gaurantee we would win anymore games with him this year. Just speculation.

Last year's offense wasn't in the same stratosphere as this one. We had zero running game last year and no offensive consistency. Our opponents starting field position was almost always good. We had less experience and honestly less talent last year. We were at least a decent defense last year. We allowed third down conversions but generated turnovers and occasional stops.

Speculation? Are you watching the same games? The players that were at least decent in Wilcox's system are absolutely awful. You honestly believe if we had a defense that had one or two extra stops we don't win every game outside of UF and Bama and UF is a toss up.

That's right on the money. We had key injuries on offense and that put an unusally heavy burden on a defense without the size upfront that we needed to compete in the SEC.

We finally get that size this year and stay relatively healthy on offense. Wilcox's scheme masked a lot of our deficiencies on defense. Sal's coaching and Dooley's decision to switch to a 3-4 cost both of them their job.

Bray is a choker... but with the D as bad as it was Dooley had no choice but to put the game in his hands. With a better D, that would not have been as necessary.

I think Dooley has made some critical mistakes that will likely cost him his job.

One, it seems obvious that hiring Sal and moving to the 3-4 were big mistakes.

Two, I think he should have benched Bray. A player can have his attitude as long as he's winning games and making big plays when needed. When one acts like a whiny brat then chokes with the game on the line.... I'm not putting my career future in his hands. Bray is incredibly talented. Danny Wuerffel had little talent. But Wuerffel knew how to get the ball to playmakers and did it best when the pressure was on. Bray locks up when pressured... and opposing DC's know it.

With Wilcox, we went 11-14, so I don't think our record would be that much different. Dooley has been losing as a head coach most of his career. I don't think one assistant was going to miraculously change that.

The games would've played out differently. At times, you do different things on offense depending on what you expect from your defense. Still, I think 2 more wins with Wilcox; and 4 more if we had a real DC like Dick Bumpass.

With less talent and more youth, Wilcox's D's allowed 100 yds and 140 yds less than Sunseri's D this year. In his first year... he was installing a new system too. He allowed 25 ppg and 23 ppg in his two years at UT. Sunseri has allowed 37 ppg.

Again, if Wilcox had stayed, this would have been his most talented defense by a fairly wide margin.

A HC is no different than any other manager of a large, complex organization. You have to have quality people and leaders around you.

One of the biggest strikes against Dooley is that he hired Sunseri.
