What is the one thing you felt you were the least prepared for with adulthood?

I wasn't prepared for the now known scientific fact* that once you hit about 23 or 24, time starts moving about 5 times as fast and before you know it, you're in your 40s and it gets harder each year to not gain 10lbs by just eating a candy bar.

Also, I wasn't prepared to find out that at no point do you ever really feel like you're a "grown up" or that you "get it". I always assumed by the time you hit 30 or so, something just switched on inside of you and poof...you're an adult and you think and feel different. The reality is that I eventually figured out that adults don't know #@!$ either, they just get better at pretending they do.

*not really a fact.

What it's truly like to work a job that places so much stress on you to the point you are miserable. But unlike when you were 16, you can't just walk out.

Realizing that there's nothing you can do about the fact that people are going to refer to you as "sir".

Sex. I didn't know what to expect or how to react to it. I never saw my wife naked until we married and I feel like, although I was technically a man at 18, I didn't fully accept the responsibility of being "a man" until I married her at 20. I had no clue how sex can ruin your life or make it great. It's a powerful thing that can be used for good (believe me it is lol) but it can also be used to draw you down a path of hopelessness and a sense of feeling lost. I'm thankful that I waited until marriage as I was prepared for it then. But I wasn't at 18 and I sure as heck thought I was.

Paying down student loans. I've never been late or not paid the minimum amount, usually I pay more. However sallie Mae now navient, in my case, lowered my minimum amount due after I had paid more than the minimum in previous months. I thought I was knocking out my dept quicker by paying more than I realized, but that I was paying less than I had origianlly started with because I paid more earlier and my minimum amount due shrank. They screw you by not applying the additional amount you're paying to your principle, it's kind of like paying your future months bills earlier. So if you can always pay at least your original monthly amount if not more.

The day your kid does something or says something that seems familiar and you realize that you're basically dealing with the drunken dwarf version of yourself.

I can't stand something to be wrong with one of my kids, and I can't make it go away. Them being sick, or a problem at school. My biggest thing is mine struggle with my wife's health problems, they don't understand. When she had chemo and lost her hair they had a hard time. Cried a lot, and got angry about it. It made me cry, I wanted them to not feel that, but heck I felt the same. Hurt me more though seeing them like that.
