What is the rivalry like at games?

I have been to Tuscaloosa the last 2 times that we played there. It seems like the older fans are much more respectful to opposing fans than the young ones. I had 2 instances the last time down that caused me to decide not to go back this year. The students that have seen nothing but winning are super arrogant. In 09' I had my 10 year old son with me and we were walking to the car when a group of Bammers starting swearing at us.

I never had any problems with the bandwagon Bammers here in TN, but FL fans no matter if it's home or away are the worst. So many people think Bama is our biggest rival because they have been so good as of late, but I seek great pleasure in beating the gators more then anyone. Once Saban retires Bama will rightfully go back to the middle of the pack in the SEC where they belong, and Tennessee will then gain a few 1000 Bama bandwagon fans who will portray their loyalty to the VOLS even though we all saw them with the Bama hat on just a year ago.
You think Bama is isn't our biggest rival because they've been "good as of late"? The Bubbas are historically the best team in the conference with us right behind. If anything, it should be Florida that should go back to middle of the pack where they belong since that's where they were for most of their existence.

Just wondered what it's like being in the stands for a UT Bama game, at home or on the road?

It it a hostile atmosphere with violence, or is it quite a respectful environment for fans?

Reason I ask is I really want to see us play Bama either next year or 2015 live, but I don't want to go if it isn't a pleasant game to attend.... Especially at Tuscaloosa.....

I attended the last game UT ever played at Legion. Where we parked the people invited us into their house. My wife, used their facilities. But the guy sitting next to me said he saw a Bammer stab a Vol fan at halftime when he went to the restroom. I watched the B'ham news to confirm, and he wasn't making it up. I've been to Legion Field twice. Just keep your mouth shut, and you don't have to worry.

For the most part bama fans are respectful, you'll get a little taunting from both sides as the game plays out. Just stay away from the students and you'll be fine.

This is good advice. Several years ago, one of my buddies that I played minor league baseball with called me and said that he had tickets to the TN-Bama game in Tuscaloosa, and asked me if I wanted to go. Of course, I wasn't going to turn that down. We agreed on on a meeting place, and I showed up in my Peyton jersey. He looked at me kind of strange and asked, "You're really gonna wear that? It's your funeral." I didn't think much about it until we got to the game. His brother, who was a student at Bama, had given him the tickets. We were seated directly in the middle of the student section. Needless to say, a single orange and white number 16 jersey in the middle of a sea of crimson caused quite the commotion. A bloody scrum in-sued. I got my licks in and took some in return. The cops hauled some to jail, but let me go and suggested that it would be better if I didn't return. I thought that was good advice, and I still haven't returned to Tuscaloosa.

I will add you will see much prettier girls at a game in Bama compared to Knoxville.

I've lost count of the number of Bama games I've been to. over 30 of them. I've never, ever had a problem at any UT - Bama game. I can't even recall seeing an issue between fans from the two schools.

Vast majority of fans from the two schools have the respect for the other that the players, coaches and administration have for each.

Tuscaloosa is an awesome college venue.

Honestly, I've been to many many UT/Bama games in the past both there and at home and of all our rivals the Bama fans were always pleasant to be around...Yes both sides talk some trash but normally it isn't violent,,,Just some good bantering back and forth...It is without doubt one of the loudest games you will go to for sure...Both fan bases want to win this game badly.

Maybe I wont see us play away at Bama or Florida then....

I've been to Gainesville 3 times and am making my 4th trip to Tuscaloosa tomorrow. Never had a problem with opposing fans at either place. In a lot of ways attending an away game can be more fun than a home game.

In your situation though if you're only going to be able to make one game, then attend a game in Neyland.

Good advice guys. cheers.

I am glad it isn't chaos in the stands, it would ruin it for me if I had to keep dodging bottles and fists...

Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus. As much as I love trashing bama I have to say they are some of the best rival fans I've ever seen. I've been to probably a dozen UTvsBama games and never had anything but a great time with them. I had a friend that went to school there in '03 so I went to a bunch of non-UT games there. The only fights I ever saw there was with Georgia fans and they were totally to blame. The last game I saw down there was the '09 game and instead of rubbing in a tough loss everybody was extremely sympathetic telling me how we out played them and they got lucky. BTW Dreamland BBQ is a must if you go down there. But make your first game next year in Knoxville. I always think that the colors of the teams matching the color of the leaves of fall is one of the most beautiful things in sports. So yeah, alabama fans are awsome (I just threw up a little in my throat).

The only thing good to come out of alabama is I65.

O.K. now I feel better. GBO!!!!!!!!!!!

Great, now I'm excited about something which isn't 100% set in stone and it a year away. Thanks...

Seriously though, I'm going to make the trip.

Avoid the swamp.

My two worst away game experiences occurred in Fla, and one was a bowl game not even vs. the gators.

Fla police (at stadium events, at least) should get the death penalty [NCAA] for lack of institutional control.

Let's just say animosity/violence-wise, it's nothing compared to a huge English soccer rivalry. Our tailgating is way better though.

You will notice that the responses are all over the place. It's mostly up to you. If you are respectful and can turn the cheek when someone is being a goofball, than you will be fine. Just expect a little harassment. That's the way it is and that's the way it should be.

My last two trips to tuscaloosa were great, except for the loses. If we had won, I'm not so sure it would have been but during pregame we all partied with each other. It's a great thing to be a part of, especially when we are winning our share.

Stephen, having lived in Europe for three years and attended several soccer matches while there, I can tell you that it is quite a different experience. The soccer matches I attended were 90% young men. the visitor fan section had plexiglass separating them from the home crowd. I assume to stop assaults and violence, hence why there were almost no females or families and kids there. Everytime there was a goal scored, fans would throw their beer cups at the field only to hit and soak their own fans, not counting they are $6-8 beers. Our college football experience if very much different. We sit with our rivals. We drink and eat together before the game in parking lots. We have a much more friendly environment (of course not always). Gameday is more of a family reunion and time to see your friends and enjoy the fall weather. Reading these message boards would make you think we are crazed, mean spirited, violent and mannerless crowd. We arent. I am not sure if you know this, but our band plays the other schools fight song as a way to welcome our opponent and extend hospitality to our guests. That is another reason you chose well when you chose the University of Tennessee Volunteers! GBO

Edit: Southern Hospitality: I live 5 mins from Neyland Stadium and you are a welcomed guest should you make your way here. You would not need a hotel while in knoxville. cheers!

I agree. I've been to Gainesville and Athens and never had any issues. I'm coming to their town, so honestly, I'd be disappointed if I didn't get booed on the street or see some gator chomps directed my way. That's part of what makes college football, particularly in the south, awesome. I don't want to get stabbed in the parking lot, but if they don't love their team as much as I love mine, what do I have to cheer against or celebrate beating?

Stephen -- Have you ever been South? Many Brits are uncomfortable about how curious and personal Americans can be with questions that we, Americans just consider being friendly. Well, they're usually talking about the North which we consider a pretty standoffish place. Even attending a professional games in the US (you mentioned you went with your Dad, IIRC) is nothing like going to a college game in the South.

What I'm getting at is that you should expect culture shock despite having been to the US before.

If you come to Knoxville wearing Big Orange expect to be overwhelmed with kindness. People will overwhelm you with offers of food, drink, etc. and will want to get to know you. That's not strange but rather normal for us. Even if you go to Tuscaloosa, you can expect the same treatment, especially prior to the game. And if you tell a group of tailgaters from either team that you've come across the pond to watch the greatest football rivalry known to man, you can expect to get treated like a King whether you're sporting orange in Knoxville or Tuscaloosa, especially pre-game. Southerners pride ourselves on our hospitality.

As others have said, Gainesville isn't worth the trip. They're a different breed altogether.

Although it has nothing to do with the game itself, Stephen, I know that you have said elsewhere that you want to tie other events in with whichever Tennessee game you ultimately decide to attend. Assuming that you will have a rental car, a strong point to consider with respect to the possibility of attending next year's home game against Alabama would be the proximity of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the western entrance of which is only about 50 miles from Knoxville. Fall colors in the Smokies tend to peak around the weekend of the Alabama game. Here is a current report, which illustrates just how beautiful the park is at that time: Fall Colors - Great Smoky Mountains National Park (U.S. National Park Service).

You will be among friends at Neyland Stadium and I assure you that the state of Alabama most certainly does not have anything that will compete with the Smoky Mountains in fall. Just a suggestion to enhance your overall enjoyment of the trip.

This is really good to know. I would say I picked the right team to support, but Tennessee chose me, and I am grateful for that.

For the most part bama fans are respectful, you'll get a little taunting from both sides as the game plays out. Just stay away from the students and you'll be fine. Florida fans are the most disrespectful scum of the SEC (see piss bombs) UGA fans are just arrogant. But for the most part bammers aren't horrible, band wagoners are the worst bammers
I agree. Bama and UT have hated each other for a long time but the games of past are always handed down to the next generation of fans. For the most part there is respect there for each other even if we hate each the opposing teams and their fans.

Most of the Aholes are either young or bandwagon fans that are clueless about the history of the teams.

I've never had a problem at Tuscaloosa. The Bama fans I interacted with were very friendly wishing us a good game before and safe driving on the way back. The worst thing I experienced was an occasional fan yelling roll tide at us (hardly the worst thing in the world).

On the other hand, I could not wait to get out of the city of Tuscaloosa. To say the least, I was not impressed.

I've been to numerous Bama - Tennessee games at both places, and as far as rivalries go the respect on both sides is great. Bama vs Auburn? Not so much. To be honest, the taunting and whatnot during that game is sometimes unsettling. I'd much rather see Bama/UT.

If you've never been to Tuscaloosa, you owe it to yourself to go. If you're a Tennessee fan, go for the game in 2015. The students dress much nicer than the regular fan base and are top notch for the most part, so ignore the comments from those on this board that lie and have never even been to a game yet criticize the young people. The older adults have the reputation of being, maybe, mildly arrogant. They've seen lots of championship teams. For example a fifty year old saw 64, 65, 73, 77, 78, 92, and then this recent streak. So cut them some slack. They think their team is usually pretty good.

You want to come to see a game at Neyland at the beautiful headwaters of the Tennessee River with the Great Smokey Mountains as a backdrop. Tons of stuff to do within a short drive. You will be welcomed like no other place.

But American football crowds are not as scary as most around world football (soccer to us).

True violence is fairly rare here.

Nothing like the stabbings that will typically follow up a Millwall/West Ham match.

UT/Bama just has a different feel. They are other big games and great atmospheres but none of them match Bama. Im bias but I think its the best rivalry in college football for the overall history.

Stephen, just got back from a trip to the UK. Regarding UTProf's comment about the Florida "fans", they aren't Southern. My advice is stay away from Gator Land. Come to Neyland. It truly is a special college football experience. And Volosaurus rex is correct about the Smokies; I've hiked every National Park in the lower 48 and some in Alaska. The Smokies are incomprable. Also (please don't laugh at me, Vol Nation) Dollywood is also less than 50 miles away and at the edge of the Smokies main entrance. I was amazed at how many people in the UK had a visit to Dollywood at the top of their bucket list! If you ever just HAVE to have an away game experience, go to Ole Miss. They have the best fans and greatest tailgates, and I have been most of the SEC stadiums for games. Good luck; post when you're coming and the Vol Nation will welcome you!
