What is the rivalry like at games?

To continue in that train of thought, the Blue Ridge Parkway follows the crest of the Appalachian Mountains for 469 miles, essentially from the eastern entrance to Great Smoky Mountain National Park north almost to the southern entrance to Shenandoah National Park. It would provide a beautiful companion experience to time spent in the Smokies. Just take your time; it's slow mountain driving and lots of beautiful fall color to behold.

Hey stephenk24- Im sure youve probably covered this on here before, but how did you become a Vol fan living in England? Genuinely curious.

Stephen -- Have you ever been South? Many Brits are uncomfortable about how curious and personal Americans can be with questions that we, Americans just consider being friendly. Well, they're usually talking about the North which we consider a pretty standoffish place. Even attending a professional games in the US (you mentioned you went with your Dad, IIRC) is nothing like going to a college game in the South.

What I'm getting at is that you should expect culture shock despite having been to the US before.

If you come to Knoxville wearing Big Orange expect to be overwhelmed with kindness. People will overwhelm you with offers of food, drink, etc. and will want to get to know you. That's not strange but rather normal for us. Even if you go to Tuscaloosa, you can expect the same treatment, especially prior to the game. And if you tell a group of tailgaters from either team that you've come across the pond to watch the greatest football rivalry known to man, you can expect to get treated like a King whether you're sporting orange in Knoxville or Tuscaloosa, especially pre-game. Southerners pride ourselves on our hospitality.

As others have said, Gainesville isn't worth the trip. They're a different breed altogether.

Stephen mate this post is spot on.

there really isn't much trouble at all at our football games and if there is, its 99% of the time drunks, and the police/security usually jump on it real quick.

And like Prof said once they find out you came all the way from England you will be overwhelmed with kindness whether its UT or Alabama fans. Alabama fans will appreciate that you chose the best rivalry in College football to see on your trip.

So whether you choose to go to Knoxville or to Alabama you will have a great time.

cheers

Guys I said earlier on this site that I just moved to Alabama.... not by choice and will not go into detail with that but lets just say it involves Satan moving with my small child.

Anyway I took a job with the Children's of Alabama and due to the tenants there they receive guests from time to time. Today I was surrounded by Bama fans and I did not have much support so in desperation I grabbed the nearest piece of writing material and wrote "Go Vols" on it, (it was a piece of industrial paper towel by the way). For the next few hours I would hold my sign up whenever I seen Bama "pukey" red and attempt to gain a reaction from that particular individual... most laughed... some gave me an Eye Roll.... on two Rare occasions I had Tennessee fans cheer for my support (both were women and pretty by the way, but of course that's normal if your a Vol fan Woohoo). Not long before it was time to leave work this very attractive lady walks in.... everyone surrounds her and is chatting... this goes on for several minutes, I am Oblivious to the importance of this moment for these people. The Information desk then calls for me to approach and I am confronted by the lady.... Miss Alabama! I was introduced and she shook my hand... I smiled and held up my sign, she laughed and hollered "Roll Tide", I laughed back and said "Go Big Orange" and then muttered "Buck Fama!" The group then tried to get me to take a picture with her.. here is where I May have screwed up... I said "No thanks, this is a pretty lady but if she had Orange on I would be melting!" We tossed comments back and forth and I eased out of the scene. She was still surrounded by poor misled fans of the Wrong color.

I have talked Smack all day..... and I said probably twenty times today that after Sunday I will talk Smack again for another year.

On a serious not.. would you all have taken a pic with the enemy.... you know they say Satan looks good? ha ha

Go Vols!

Skip going to Alabama or Florida and go to the next UT-Ole Miss game instead. Much better scenery.

Any game in Neyland trumps any college game you will see anywhere else when it is a good opponent and good weather.

Neyland in the late 90's was the best environment in sports period. Only thing close I can recall was Fenway in 2004.

I remember at the game against Florida in 2002 I thought I was gonna have to sucker punch a few jerks just to get them to shut the hell up.

This is really good to know. I would say I picked the right team to support, but Tennessee chose me, and I am grateful for that.

We are happy to have you among us. You joining during a down cycle says a lot about you, imho. It's easy to follow a team when they're up but the same isn't true when a team's down and out and both opponents and the press pretend that the past dominance and the wonderful traditions never happened or don't exist. We're also only a few years removed from having the winningest active coach in college football.

Your questions, support, and excitement have served as a reminder to those of us who get down on our team or forget just why we love college football and most of all our Vols. Collectively speaking, we've taken a lot for granted.

Finally, you're no more an outsider than someone born here. Tennessee fans are family and we don't distinguish between those who were born fans and those who chose to be fans.

Stephen,

You let us know when you come to a game, and, I guarantee you the folks on this board will see that you are taken good care of. Tennessee is one of the most hospitable places in the world. I brought my wife over from Brazil about 4 years ago. She was actually afraid to come. Now, she would never go back. She has been amazed how friendly the people are here.
