Man... you had me going.

I think the Vandy and UK games might be on that Jefferson Pilot stuff, not sure. They have a lower SEC game every week.

Well I have been through a lot of the ups and downs having followed Vol football since 1951. That includes two good seasons with the General in 51 and 52 followed shortly by a miserable season under Harvey Robinson in 54  (4-6). Then in 56 Bowden Wyatt and Johnny Majors led us back to the top echelon (10-1). Then another slide to 4-6 in 58. That was the year I saw the Vols fail to get a single first down against Auburn. Not manygames were televised then but this was on national tv... and the Vols never stretched the chains..Talk about no offense this year... at least we got a first down in every game. Not sure anything was worse than that 58 season where we even lost to the University of Chattanooga. Then we played mediocre football for the next 8 years with 4-6, 5-5, 6-4 type seasons. Finally in 66 Doug Dickey gave us some 8 and 9 win seasons. The early 70's saw some 10 win seasons with Bill Battle using Dickey's recruits. Another slide started about 74 and continued through the early 80's with Battle and Majors until Majors finally gave us a few 9 and 10 win seasons (mixed with some 5 & 7 win seasons) starting about 85. But somewhere mixed in there was an 11 year stetch we didn't beat Alabama. The 90's with majors and Fulmer were sprinkled with 8, 9, 10, 11 and 13 win seasons. So I have seen many downs. In answer to your question the losing hurts me just as much. I give you this scenario: If  we were 1-9 heading to our 10th game against USC, I would be expecting a win. I never liked Johnny Majors but he had a saying: "We don't fight any windmills".  He claimed to expect to win every game but history shows Alabama was his "windmill". No Vol fan will be happy with less than 10 wins but it is going to happen occasionally... let's just hope we can right the ship before it is a prolonged losing stretch.

i'll say i'm not optomistic at all right now about the direction the team is going in. since 2001 i said fulmer needed to make coaching changes and that is the main reason i blame him for most of the teams problems. sanders is gone which is good cutcliffe is on his way back, i would have liked somebody else, but he is alot better than sanders. i'll get my season tickets next year and go watch them struggle to a 7-4 record in my opinion. i know for a fact though, my neighbor and some of my friends i tailgate with have had enough and won't purchase tickets next year. so i know i'm not alone in my expectations of next seasons team.

I have stated in the past (more than once) that I think UT and Fulmer are a good fit. However I can see him being his own down fall. I am and will always be a VOL FAN! But truthfully speaking the last two games have been an embarrassment!

I appreciate some of the "RA RA Go Vols" posts...but this is about more than that. This program is in serious decline. People (who aren't sheep) are becoming worn out and to the point they don't care. It's starting to happen to some close friends of mine and it's depressing. Some folks I know have stopped watching the games because it is so excruciating to watch. Isn't this supposed to be fun and exciting? How about an offense that is fun to watch? It's a pile of slop. Anybody feel me here?

Well even though we lost I had some true exciting moments during the ND game, I was sceaming and yelling when we tied it up in the third...of course I sort or crashed after the 70 yrd reception by the dude with the long hair, but hey as I said in another thread "Life is like a box a chocolates"

My attitude is that this year is a fluke - it will get fixed or changes will be made and UT will be what we expect it to be. I'm disappointed of course but ups and downs are part of the deal.

I'm not entirely convinced that we will win out but overall, I like most of our players and think their effort is good. I'd like to see those guys win out and win a bowl game. It will have more impact on their lives than on mine.

I feel ya Jmxvol, but life goes on. I coach little league baseball. Its hard not to show your dissappointment to a group of 11 and 12 year olds when you lose. It's hard to watch your team lose by 10 or 12 runs. You just go back out to the next practice and try to correct the mistakes that were made. When they see you give up on them, then they give up on themselves. This football season has been the same for me. I can't or better yet won't just give up on my VOLS.

I've been a vol fan since I was born. I was raised that there are no other teams. I have my complaints from time to time, but I will root for the vols every year. I don't care if we are playing ping pong, I am rooting for the Vols. The Vols may not win a game, but I will wear my orange everyday.

The Power T will fly, Fridays in the fall will always be "Wear Orange Day," and come spring, the Orange and White Sea Ray will return to the blue (-ish, er, greenish. . . .brown. . . .ah, screw it) waters of Fort Loudon. Oh, and I can't wait to watch the Rose Bowl, loving every second of the fact that Alabama will be sitting at home. How's that?

GO VOLS

The losses have been painful, but if there's a sliver lining, it would be that our next great season will be that much more special. You have to experience the agony to really appreciate the joy.

I hope we bounce back quickly, I couldn't take another year of this. My wife told me yesterday that I'd been acting depressed all fall... which is true unfortunately, largely because of our embarrassing record, combined with the fact I hear how wonderful texas is everyday.

The next year or so could very well define Fulmer's legacy at Tennessee - and cause a significant change in how the nation views our program.

Go Big Orange.

Says it all.

By theway were you there in 59 when the Vols stopped Billy Cannon on the goalline to upset LSU? Wayne Grubb was my neighbo when he coached at UNA. He had a picture of this play on his office wall.

Even in lean years there aregreat memories!!

Yes I do. We will have a losing record in men's basketball this coming year but our fans will be excited because of new hope with Coach Pearl. But in football it's hard to stay optimistic with Fulmer & Co. coaching. If they can't win with the plethora of high school All Americans, imagine what happens when the talent is depleted as will surely happen.

Hello all this is my first post on this board. Living in Ga, this has been a very difficult season for me. I still wear all my Orange and just smile when some smart ass Ga fan makes a remark. I do think it is time for CPF to go he has let us slip to far and if he did'nt see it coming over the last few years then he does not deserve his $2 million dollar salary. I think he has lost the respect of the players and that is hard to get back. Just my thoughts. Regardless, :post-20645-1119625378: I will still bleed Orange. GO VOLS.

The opinion of UT Football..hmm. Good topic. I got in to a discussion with someone about this before the season started...and even though this year has sucked big time, when you look back over the years, and hopefully years to come, there is one thing that you alwasy have to come back to..."ARE WE IN CONTENTION FOR OUR CONF. TITLE ON A REGULAR BASIS?". Which really means, are we competitive with the top teams in the conf. regularly. Now, going back to 2000 to now, there is a definite drop off for us against the rest of the big boys of the league. But what you have to consider is this, are we as capable of beating those teams as they are of beating us? Usually the answer it YES. YOu can't win 'em all, though it would be nice.

Last year was a perfect example. We were not expected to do anything but finish behind UF and UGA. And at the end of the year, no one was all that suprised though that we won the EAST. There's a reason for that.

While we all have justified gripes with the way this season was handled and all have differing opinions of what is to come in the future, there's still one thing that cannot be overlooked. Year in and year out we are usually in the discussion of winning the division and/or conference.

And at the end of the day, that's really all you can ask for as a fan. i'd rather be in the discussion, or be a factor, than not be heard from at all, like the MSU, Ole Miss, Vandy's, USC, and Kentucky's of the world.

Let's face it, over the past 5 years, this conference has developed in to a 6 way race for the title every year, and with the addition of Spurrier at USC, and based on what he'd done down there this year, you'd have to think they'll be in the mix as well in the future...

No team has repeated as conf. champs since we did it in 97 & 98, right?. And i think it will be a while before you see a team come out and dominate like UF did in the 90's.

So, overall i'm still happy with the status of this program just not recent performance of this program.

Which could lead to the direction of the program..which is a nother important part of this equation...are you going up, down, staying still? While i wouldn't say we've acheived the same success we did in the 90's by any stretch, we have won the East twice since 2000, we've played in Bowl games every year, so w/out a BCS berth or a conf. champ in the last 5-7 years, i would lean RIGHT NOW to saying we're staying still. Now, if we have a losing record this year, and follow up next year with another crapola season like this, we will have done a complete 180, and going down hill fast. But if you really want to see a team that was heading down hill...go to Lincoln, NE and State College, PA (at least until this year), and Tuscaloosa, AL (also at least until this year), and South Bend, IN (also until this year). All of those hit VERY rocky times, much rockier than we have seen thus far (barring a losing season or two!).

So until we hit the bottom, there's still a chance to turn it around w/out having to go thru what those afformentioned programs had/have to endure. :cross:

As weird as this may sound I love them even more when they struggle. Being a Vol fan in Indiana I don't have a lot of support outside of my dad, so I hear it when they lose.

I can take the heat though and when it is all said and done the Vols are going to be very good more often than they will be very bad. Therefore giving me the upper hand more times than not.

This season has been rough but it will not deter me from the university or the team. I went to IU and went through a similar process with their basketball team. They struggled and everybody ridiculed them and all of a sudden they were in the Final Four. Now they've sucked since then but just like Tennessee they are going to be good more times than bad.

I love the Vols!

Just as a side note to those who think Fulmer should go...be careful what you wish for! A lot of people wanted Knight ( )out at IU and we ended up with Mike Davis( )????
