What will be an acceptable record in 2012

Objectively, an overall winning record including a winning record in conference play would be job well done for Dooley. So five conference wins and the non con wins would set the bar at eight. If he also has a bowl win buy 2012... give the man an extension.

I like the word, extension, better than, "keep his job," so I edited it into the original post. Thanks for your post and contribution to the thread, btw!

:good!: Yes sir. I'm fired up about this weekend. GBO!

Yep, starting strong and playing hard to the end is critical. Hopefully, the lessons learned from Alabama and Oregon will motivate them. They'll need to make big plays early, because it'll be even harder when they're gassed. I'm not sure it will be as easy to rattle Garcia as it has been in previous games, however. They'll need to be really fired up!

I can see where the so called "NegaVols" are coming from. I used to be the first one calling out "negavol", but I've grown to appreciate the "show me the facts (success)" mentality.

I too would have to say this year has been unsuccessful so far. Did we expect it? Yes. Is it false to say this year has been unsuccessful? No. Poor play, questionable team participation, questionable play calling on both sides of the ball at times, 9-10-11 men on the field at times, the team looking under-prepared not just less athletic, Dooley's over the top pressers, mediocre recruiting class, and I'm sure I've missed some.

With that said I don't believe this year defines Derek Dooley as a coach as some do. I don't believe he'll go down in the history books as a bad recruiter or coach based on this year's results. I have decided to delay my assessment of him as a coach until 2012. This will be our first opportunity to see a seasoned Derek Dooley squad built almost entirely of his recruits. It will also be our first evidence of this coaching staff's ability to coach players to their potential. Until that time we will just be watching patch work football. By 2013 we'll all have a better understanding of what kind of coach Derek Dooley is and the direction he has our program headed, good or bad.

Until that time arrives I think the real question is:

What will we consider an acceptable year in 2012 for Dooley to get an extension? 8 wins and a bowl win, 9 wins and a bowl win? Neither, we need to give him 1 more year? Where do we draw the line? Because after our recent past (lack of success), to me this line is blurred. But as is all too familiar on Volnation this is just one man's opinion, it's not the gospel truth.

*Please, if you see a grammar or spelling mistakes in this post, point it out ot me in a respectful manner, and I will gladly correct it for you.

I'm not worried about records. I'm hoping we are back able to compete even if record is only 6-6

Most of the people on the board are so pessimistic. How can fans get up for this weekend while reading this ****? We are goin to ROLL the COCKS tomorrow and we are goin to ROLL our way to a National Championship and back to prominence where we should be and where we belong. A street will be named after Dooley and Phil will be a friend to every Vol fan and CLK will be out of a job. You all need to get your damn heads out of the sand and get behind this team.

If I was a player I would not come out and bust my ass every week for you all because you dont believe. This staff knows what they are doing and is the staff we need right now.

First college game I ever went to was at Neyland. My whole family is Vol fans. I prefer my orange with maroon but Derek is Bill's nephew so I'm definitely pulling hard for him.

Not a bad post at all. I like your spirit. Sounds like a plan to me. I hope you're right and I'll be there cheering for the Vols, along with you, and every other poster on this sight this weekend. We don't all have to have the same opinions to want the same results. Diversity is a strength, not a weakness. GBO- roll the LameCocks!!!

At Florida, at Bama and at Oregon are three tall orders to start the year in 2011.

Someone posted a schedule early on in this thread, along with a link to scheduled games thru 2019.

The schedule isn't much of a help. With the positive direction Tom O'Brien has NC St. headed (UNC's imminent demise won't hurt St. either!), I wouldn't be surprised if that game is scrapped before then. Hammy has proven he has no interest in playing tough non-conference games in the future. Plus, I think we will begin to see even more conference realignment over the next 2-3 years and it could/might/maybe result in new or different SEC teams being in the mix (like a Texas A&M).

With that said, I think CDD will need at least 8 wins that season, one of which being over UF or BAMA, to keep himself off the hot seat.

IMO I think 7-9 wins and a bowl win will be acceptable in 2 years as long as we are showing improvement every year and that our losses are competitive. (No 30+ point losses like we have had this year).

I think once CDD has a chance to recruit his style of players and get the right guys for this team's system that we will be competitive in the SEC as a whole, not just the east.

we're not competing if we're 6-6, that's mediocre

I disagree. Players can compete but not be physically mature enough to beat opponents and win but are competitive (See LSU game this year). that is the competitive I speak of.

I can live with that although I realize many fans cannot. I've lived through lots of it..

Why are some people acting like 8 wins in 2012 would be a good sign? If anything, it's a bad sign.

Well we're half way there this year, we're competitive in the first half
we have to be much better than 6-6, or Neyland will only be half full

Some peoples' expectations are pathetic. I understand we're not winning it all next year but some people need to raise their standards. I saw someone said 8-4 or 9-3 is acceptable in 2013. If it's 2013 and Dooley hasn't done any better than 8-4, he should be on his way out.
