What will be an acceptable record in 2012

Great, great post as always, LWS. I've come to realize how important a "Tennessee" person is for the role - exactly because the recruiting work which must be done. That is why Saban et al. will not come here for any amount of money.

Regarding Fulmer's support - was Hambone the catalyst for its erosion? After Pearl, he got delusions of grandeur didn't he?

don't think so. there were some of the power brokers who were tired of some of the losses that kept happening and were chirpping at Hammy. Enough of them that he could then make a move. The big guy had to sign off of course and left the outcome up to MH.

Whatever his record is we need to stick by him. There is no one man in the team that counts for the coach as well. Yes he is the leader but he can't make plays happen. Good players make things happen. You have to give him some time 5 years minium to start to turn this program into contention again. Since our first game in 1891 we have only won six titles so its not like we have always been number one. Look at Bama 1892 first game 13 titles since that time. Numbers speak for themselves. I wanna see the VOLS win as much as anyone, but getting rid of DD in two or three years does not solve the problem. It only creates another one. The more coaches leave the less players will wan't to come here to play. It's called stability they wan't that. So we as fans need to sit back cheer and stand by our program. Win or Lose! And in four to five years we might be back at the top of the SEC. But I will say this triple option offence is catching on and I think in a few years more and more teams will run this because its hard to defend. Just saying we might need to catch up with the times.

I have no expectation for next year much less 2012. Too much uncertainty. For all we know, we might be staring at probation that could slow DD's attempts at turning this program back in the right direction....not that it could be any worse, but it could delay progress. UT is in a tough position. Larry said it well and in my 40+ years of watching UT football, I can tell you he's right. I'm just looking for progress from week to week and from year to year. SEC championships and even the opportunity to play for one isn't something that will come easily and it certainly shouldn't be taken lightly. I hope for those opportunities but I don't expect them.

VOL fans are so fair weather I swear, if were winning everyone one is the best player coach etc. But when we are not doing so well we wanna get rid of everyone. I would be willing to bet if some miracle were to happen, and we won out this year. The threads on here would be DD is the right guy Simms is a stud, bla bla bla! True fans stick by there team no matter what! Last year everyone wanted Crompton out deth threats etc. Then when he had a good finish he was the hero all the sudden. It just makes me sick how our fans act. Leaving the game last week? Come on that really shows support PLEASE!

My crystal ball says Dooley's career will follow a similar path to what Mike Shula's did. Young, personable, intelligent but unable to compete with the wiley, experienced, successful coaches of most SEC team. Ergo, my WAG for 2012 is 7-5 and a Gator Bowl bid.

Vandy could be the SEC's only weak sister by 2012...maybe Kentucky and Ole Miss...we'll have to see how Tennessee rebuilds. Arkansas, Mississippi State, South Carolina, and even Kentucky are on the upswing. Dooley will have to recruit and coach his heinie off to elevate UT above mid-tier by 2012. We should be better next year and competitive the year after that. Personally, I think that Dooley has the qualities necessary to become successful in our conference. If he brings in some very good DTs, it will happen. Otherwise, it ain't gonna.

I'm still shocked that so many people would be happy with 8 wins in 2012. Even Shula managed a 10 win season in year 3, and he sucked. Look at all the young guys on the team this year. There will be more than a few talented juniors and seniors on that team. If Dooley can't win 10 games that year, 9 minimum, then it's probably a good indicator that he's not any good. If Tennessee wins 8 games in 2012, he should absolutely be shown the door.

Johnny Majors set the bar low so 7-6. CDD's record @ UT will then be 14-23. He will resign as HC taking a position with Bart Durham.

i would consider 8 wins a vast improvement, and it would send a sign we are on the right track IMO. Maybe by 2014-2015 I would expect a consistant 9-10 win seasonsn and SEC CG every 3-5 years. As to the comments about fair weather fans, just because people are on here being critical of the staff, or play calling, doesn't mean I don't support the team. Everyone has their own idea what "support" means, but I for one, cheer when we win, and cry when we lose. Others, well they may cheer all the time.

I'm not sure why taking essentially the same team we have now with much more depth and winning 8 games 2 years from now would constitute a massive improvement. I think Mike Shula could do that.

If Dooley's record after 2 years is 7-17, I'm not even sure he should be back for year 3.

I do believe we will be a better team but still will not have the talent be competitive in the SEC. Recruitung must improve but if you looking at the current class, Kerbyson & Crowder are probably the only kids with SEC caliber talent.
