Whats with the Jones hate?

I honestly hope he never loses another game. I really do. I just don't feel as happy as you do. I don't like the idea of Tennessee making desperate hires on the cheap. I've backed this team for too long, and I'm tired of this.

So who would you hire?

Its laugable that we bring in a proven winner and us so called fans are upset? FL hired a coor that had never been a HC they seem to be doing alright. Lets give him some time. Atleast the guy wanted to be here. More than I can say for that espn announcer we were in love with.

Those who discussed Jon Gruden for two straight months had their feelings hurt. That's all it is.

There is a difference between being behind him and the team, and being happy about the hire.

Fact is, he has as many wins against ranked teams as Dooley, 0. His recruiting classes at Cincinnati are bad at best (albeit it's Cincinnati). He got smacked around pretty good by a Dooley coached Vols team filled with underclassmen that finished with a losing record. He is a former coach in the worst BCS conference in America.

The hire was cheap, rushed, and all around butchered. He is a gamble that may or may not pay off, and with the position we're in, most people recognized that we really needed a sure thing, not another up and comer.

That being said, he's the coach. For now, he has my support. I will be at all the games next year just as I have been, but I'm certainly skeptical about his chances, and quite upset with the administration for once again flipping a coin on the program's future.

Very well put, and I agree with you completely.

GBO... despite Hart, Cheek, and their questionable hire.

I know, I know everyone should think the way you do. We should all be in lockstep with you. I guess if some don't think the way you do then they are not real fans. Were all you guys all in for Dooley this past season? He was, by the way OUR coach? He was what we had. It didn't matter if he was not the one (we felt) to lead us back to championships, he was what we had. Well that's the way some of us feel about this coach. We aren't happy with the process nor the hire. To say that we are not fans is asinine. Do you people remember Bill Battle? I do. I'm sort of an against the grain guy. I don't go along with the masses unless I feel they're right. To call the non-believers non-fans really gets my goat. I'll bet I'm looking at more Vol mementos than most of you will ever see. Vol pasta and steak sauce is not free, nor is Tostitos Chips that were bagged in 1998 and sold at the Fiesta Bowl.

I never drank Mike Hamilton's Doolaide, and I am nor drinking Dave Hart's Jones Soda. However, I am a Vol fan, and have been since around '68.

GBO....... despite Hart's bone-headedness.

Speaking as one who is unhappy with the hire, it is nothing to do with whether Jones is a good guy or has had success in the minor leagues. The problem a lot of fans including myself have is we were promised so much more than this by Hart. This is a huge letdown and this hire will not bring Tennessee back to greatness anytime soon.

Thank you... you spoke volumes regarding Hart's underwhelming hire of a man with absolutely no D1 major program experience at any coaching position, except for one year at Tampa Bay. Hart was too cheap to go after the experienced coach we need.

GBO.................anyway.

I just hope that the unhappy fans, and I do believe they are a vast minority, don't direct their unhappiness with the administration at CBJ.

You are absolutely right! I don't blame Butch Jones for Hart's stupidity, I blame Hart!

If I had been Jones, I would have jumped at the offer of a $3.1M salary, a $500K signing bonus, the very generous performance bonuses, and the chance to coach at UT!

GBO............. despite Bama's biggest fan and supporter(Dave Hart).

So who would you hire?

Someone who had D1 major program experience, especially at $3.1M salary, $500K signing bonus, and the very generous performance bonuses. For that, we could most probably have had Tressell, Petrino, or Tuberville.

GBO.............. despite Hart, who is UT's biggest problem.

Agree completely. Jones may turn out to be a good hire and may have been the best available at the end, but Hart looked absolutely incompetent. We can argue all day about Gruden, but there is enough evidence in the media to believe he had some interest, yet according to Lamonte, Hart called on 11/30 just to clear the air, and that was it. Does anyone think Saban called Mal Moore in 2006 wanting the job? Does anyone think Saban said yes the first time Mal Moore talked to him? Alabama was relentless in pursuing Saban. Hart said he called "early on" and Lamonte said he called on 11/30. Is no one even curious what really happened? Coach Jones will be evaluated on future wins and losses at Tennessee, but I think we can evalutate Hart on this hire.

Suppose you were led to believe at Christmas time that you were going to get a go-cart. Your parents did not actually come out and say that they would get you the go-cart, but there were enough hints and read between the lines for you to figure it out.

Then come Christmas morning, you did not get a go-cart, but you got a shotgun. Well, a shotgun is a wonderful gift but your expectations all along had been a go-cart.

Nothing, other than a go-cart, would be able to satisfy you at that point.

Gruden = Go Cart & Jones = Shotgun

Go. Then tell us why you think all of them would have come here.

This. Who wanted to come here? We aren't the same program we were in 1998. Hell, we are miles away from where we were in 2007.

Add to that you essentially get 3 years to make it happen, and you have to deal with extremely fickle fans who will tweet you telling him you aren't good enough to coach here, because you weren't the unattainable coach they dreamed about.

See the forest from the trees.

Um, you must not get out much. Quite a few of the ones doing the loudest griping are ones who never set foot in the Gruden posts and even griped about those guys. Methinks you're a little rushed to point out the ones most easily picked on to call them the culprits. Perhaps one day people like you will let this whole Gruden thing rest as well. Or maybe you will just be one of those types whose only contributions will be the Gruden swipes whenever you can slip them in. Please don't be that guy. Move on.

Butch is our coach. I wasn't thrilled initially with the hire but I am willing to give the guy a go since really at the end of the day I have no control over the situation. Rather than take my frustrations out that affect a group of 18-22 year olds, I can let my feelings be known to two individuals and then move on. If you still cannot handle all that I hear the White House has an excellent petition site that even has people who didn't like the election results able to sign their name for just giving up on America and wanting to secede.

Big boy pants seem in short order these days.

If you look I have never said this guy was at the top of my list. I thought there were better options out there. Although after looking at this realistically with my Chucky glasses off. I researched him. He seems like he has done a fairly solid job everywhere he has been.

Yes his team got beat by Dooley as well it should have. UT had more talent across the board than Cincy at the time. If you look back though our huge OL didn't out man his well under sized DL. Infact his DL whipped our OL tail on run plays.

I think we need to look realistically at this hire. We got a guy with a winning record. We got a guy with HC experience. We also got a coach that is a players coach. If you cannot get the players behind you doesn't matter how much talent you have. So lets support the team and coach. If he fails then he fails. Although I think the guy is going to have us back competing.

some people tricked them selfs into thinking Gruden was going to coach UT, the AD never said Gruden was our man, even when he said no thanks some were saying it was a smokescreen, they should be disapointed in them selfs not the AD not Jones, GO BIG ORANGE< GO COACH JONES<<

Fanbase isn't divided. There are some butthurt Grudenites that feel like dumbasses, so they have to be mad about something, and blame someone. There aren't many fans that are not excited about the new era, regardless of Hart, which pick the coach was, who turned us down, or whatever.

The few just happen to whine the most and the loudest. 95% of the fanbase is behind the coaches, team, and program and is united. There will always be unhappy ones. Always. There will always be ones that try to make a rift, or try to divide the fanbase. They get off on it, which should tell you enough about them.

i`m not hateing the guy, it has raised a question. have we turned into an ojt school for coaches, other than nfl players? why such a long contract for an unproven coach? why so much money for an unproven coach? where is our ad`s mindset on this?
my problem is more with the hirer than the hiree. he more than doubled his pay he tripled his astt`s pay. why? he was ready to sign at cu for 1.5mil a year for 5 years and a no where near the perks that we are giving him. we offered more money than that if we fire him. so my question is why?

Rush and budget hire. That is the truth. He may work out or he may not.

The fans are divided. It is bad. That is just the way it is right now.

I'm not sure I'd consider him to be a budget hire at all. He is like the 9th highest paid coach in CFB and hasn't coached a down for UT yet.

I wish this would all come out one day. Meet the coach at 10 pm at night and 12 hours later he is announced as coach. Just appears to be a last minute hire. I hope the coach does good but he has to prove it to me. And Hart and Booger, they can let the door hit them in the ass on the way out.

I don't understand all this griping about a 'cheap' hire? The guy is getting over 3 million a year, that's by no means cheap.
Also, I know Doolittle beat him and that's honestly my only reservation with the guy. The fact remains he's won 4 conference titles in 6 years. He's doing something right. How did Doolittle do at La Tech? Oh wait, that's right. Nevermind.
Winners win, losers lose. CBJ has the resume of a winner and he's got my support.
GBO!
