Sounds like he may be part of the INSURV team. Thankfully I don't have to experience that for about another year.

Got my bachelors in Aerospace Engineering and my masters in Mechanical Engineering from UT. Since then I've been a civil servant for the Navy working on F-18 engines.

Awesome, good bump! I love hearing what other people do for work.

I currently do part time conservation work. Trail, chainsaw, revegetation, invasive species removal, masonry work for the parks in Austin. Used to work a lot with local volunteer crews, now only a few times a year.
Also a part time arborist / tree doctor on the side, I get called in for the fun stuff. Not a certified arborist, but am a class B feller with over 1500 hours experience on the saw.
And I am a wildland firefighter for emergency relief situations, always on call.

I did get to work in many awesome places over the last few years, mostly all across the Southwest. I got to paid to travel essentially, cleaning up our parks and forests, and sometimes they even paid me to hike across mountains. Lake Tahoe/Santa Cruz/Ramona Falls/Big Sur Coastline/Ventana (CA), Grand Canyon/Flagstaff/Tuscon/Lake Powell (AZ), Zion/Bryce Canyon/Goblin Valley/St George (UT), Lake Amistad/Barton Springs/Austin/San Antonio missions etc (TX), Lake Mead/Mojave (NV), Durango/Dolores River (CO), then lots of forest work in NM. Seen many a good times, some bad, many misadventures along the way, lots and lots of hard work, but now I've settled into Austin for over a year now, which is by far the longest I've stayed put since I turned 18. I kinda miss the run, am getting itchy feet again and am thinking of relocating to CO, MO, AK, or WA soon.

Hmmmm. Seems 99% of the folks who have a degree do something totally different & unrelated. What's the point?

Lots of employers have a requirement for a degree, they just don't necessarily require it be in a related field for whatever reason. Most of us didn't end up where we set out to be, but that's not always bad. I'm a manager in a DC for a very large HVAC manufacturer, and you can bet that wouldn't have been high on my list of dream jobs as a kid, but it's not so bad after all. There's an old saying that life is what happens while you're busy making other plans.

No job, I mooch of the government like everyone else and bitc h when 1500 free dollars a month just isnt enough. Luckily I can call on my government issued phone to get more.

My unit works with satellites and computer networking, but I'm the living, breathing version of this man:
