When a penny ain’t worth a penny

Are they, though? Penny, with the benefit of both his indiscretions and the transfer portal has exactly 1 more NCAAT win than Tubby did at Memphis, and he's been there 3x as long as Tubby was.

Again, I'm not barking for Tubby Smith claiming he was the answer. I'm just saying Penny isn't the answer, never was the answer, and never will be the answer. That isn't in any way a plug for Tubby Smith.

Yes, from a $$$ perspective especially. This isnt advocating for Penny at all but things had got really bad under Tubby, especially with the schedule

Attendance was so bad under Tubby, the Tigers were giving away free tickets and free food to meet minimum attendance requirements so the Grizzlies couldnt kick them out of their FedExForum lease. And they still failed to meet those minimum requirements. If the Tigers brought back Tubby for Y3 and without an upgraded schedule, the Tigers would have been kicked out of FedExForum and would be sharing a 2,000 seat fieldhouse with the women's team...

Agree. I’m not sure why they don’t just do it now and bring in an interim. The transfers will walk but this year is going to be trash anyway, May as well get ahead of it. Tubby Smith may not have been John Wooden, but I still think it was dumb to run him for this guy.
Tubby was just not a good fit for Memphis. He couldn't recruit nor was his style enjoyable or winnable. As for Penny one would think the Memphis fans would be tired of the drama year after year. Some fan bases wallow in it and love it. Common sense fans would see it's just not productive.

Memphis's biggest mistake was not going after Bruce Pearl before he went to Auburn or even after his first 2 unsuccessful years at Auburn. Bruce is the kind of dirty coach that does well at Memphis....

They had 5 years to realize Pastner wasnt the answer but they were cheap...

Ok, from a financial perspective and fan engagement, I'll give you that. I was talking simply about wins and losses, and then respectability as a program. Penny has been only marginally better in that regard, even with many inherent advantages (both legal and illegal), and he's further torpedoed the program's already fragile image from day one.

Yep, after the AD gave him the standard vote of confidence all remains is win your conference, get into the dance with one or more wins you stay. Fall short of that and more NCAA allegations then you will be fired. I don't think he can coach his way out of it.
Penny did an interview yesterday with Jon Rothstein I think and basically said he was being treated differently than other coaches. Never really said why he was being treated differently but kinda alluded to his lack of coaching experience and being hired for his NBA connection and not having to pay his dues like every other successful coach has done. PH just simply can’t see how terrible he’s been for the program and thankfully Rick tactfully said at a Big Orange club meeting we would not be playing Memphis any time soon…which is fine with me.

I totally get that, but my point isn’t about getting rid of Tubby, it’s that they got rid of him tk hire a guy who didn’t have a clue and was gonna be a disaster. They let Penny undermine Tubby to get that job, basically doing things that would hurt the program he claims he loves. If they fired Tubby and went and hired an actual coach that wasn’t garbage and had even been a college assistant, I’d understand more. Tubby was a very bad fit there, but no way I’d take Penny over him.

I see no sense or need in ever playing them—Penny or no Penny. It serves no purpose.

Right there with you. I wouldn’t have blamed them for firing Tubby, it’s that they let Penny undermine the guy working backchannels, messing with recruits, etc. Tubby at Memphis was a bad idea, but there is no evidence that the Penny Experience is any better. At least they could’ve kept their dignity and moved onto an actual coach and not Deion light.

But they could have fired Tubby after a year or so(or sooner) and gotten a solid basketball coach that would have won and made more money and solidified program longer, making it financially beneficial long term. It’s not that they canned Tubby, it’s that they canned Tubby to fire Penny (who was doing all he could to make sure Tubby couldn’t succeed and that the school had no choice).

They fired Tubby after 2 years. It was the dismal attendance and a lot of the Grizzlies media that was pushing for his termination. The implied narrative was fire him or find a new arena to play in.

The Tigers should have gone all in on Pearl but they didnt have the cash because they had payments to Grizzlies for failing to meet attendance.

Penny was cheap and Penny would bring in fans. Penny was dirty and would bring in recruits. Problem is he cant coach. Not a lick. Memphis should cut bait now....

To be clear, I meant fire Tubby after another year, if they didn’t fire him right then. No issue with firing him, but lots of coaches could’ve come in and done things that would have been solid longer term, not some chump who is going to excite fans for a brief period but fizzle because he’s trash. Substance over style, always. Could’ve fired Penny this year and gotten that punk Will Wade, still could get him actually. You are right on about Pearl. He’d have made the investment worth it for them.

Could definitely see “strong arsed offer” at Memphis

From the outside I get it what you're saying. But for Memphis Penny is a native son. Played HS & College there. Was an NBA Allstar. His ties to the City made him a top choice... in their eyes. Heck he could have ran for Mayor and likely won.

After that Nashville fiasco with Tiger players testing positive for covid and having not taken the pandemic serious which ended in the cancellation of the game I couldn't blame Rick for not wanting to deal with them. I'd loved to see the series renewed, but it's not gonna happen in it's present state.

Probably would have been a better fit for him.

"Ronald James, 42, has was arrested and charged with with theft of property by Memphis police Thursday. James is accused of stealing multiple boxes from Memphis coach Penny Hardaway's home earlier this month and leaving with them in a shopping cart.

The alleged theft, which was caught on camera, included 26 pairs of exclusive sneakers made for family and friends, Hardaway told WREG. They included one-of-a-kind Foamposites, part of a line of Nike sneakers Hardaway made famous in his days as an NBA All-Star with the Orlando Magic."
