When did vulgar UT shirts become a thing?

If it's in an all adult setting, cool. Wear it. But I'd never wear anything like that in and around kids and obviously there are going to be lots of kids at a game.

Seems like common courtesy, but I guess I'm an old, cantankerous fart.

Would you want your mom, grandmother, former teacher or minister to see you wearing that?
I think I've told this. I usually post some of the same I hate Georgia crap on Facebook that I do here. Several years ago I was working on nights, and break was over when I copied a meme really quick from Facebook. It was a picture of UGA, and in my hurry I thought it said "can I take this shirt off", but there was no r in it. I actually posted on here, and Facebook, and went back to work. It was like 4:30, and as I was putting my phone in my toolbox, I got a notification that my mom had commented. I looked really quick, and she was fussing me out over the bad word 🤣. I took it off, and even came back here and apologized 🤣

I guess I’m just old, but it’s crazy how little a lot of people care about anything.

I am just as concerned with general conversation that you are just in earshot of. I don't remember one four letter word starting with F being taught as subject, verb, and adjective while diagramming sentences in junior high school.

I remember when I came home on leave from Japan and my dad played one of my video tapes of a trip to Tokyo. I was so embarrassed at all the bad language that I was using, every other word.

That was my wake-up call.

That and you really sound like you don't have much of a vocabulary by using the same words over and over.

Reminds me of the time after I turned 21 and the waitress asked me what would you like to drink? I said I will have a Bud Light. My mother smacked the crap out of me and told the waitress and most everyone in the restaurant, HE WILL HAVE A DR PEPPER. LMAO When my mom stopped with her outside voice the waitress was writing and talking at the same time saying Dr pepper.... Got it.

Definitely not fun being on the wrong end of the Wrath of Momma.

Then there was this shown on national TV this past weekend.

Should say Penn state

Never forget the first time I heard a recording of my voice.... I asked who the heck is that talking and my dad chuckled and said that's you. That moment you think wow my voice is terrible.... Lol

Just something I noticed at the orange bowl was a lot of fans wearing shirts emblazoned with an f-bomb on the front. This was easily seen in crowd shots as well when I rewatched the broadcast.

Maybe it's been going on for a while and I didn't notice. Maybe it took the really drunk lady in front of us screaming for my kids to read her shirt. Maybe I'm just old and need to buy one too be cool again. Idk
Typed while wearing a mask in the house and giving a one star review on yelp for apppebees.

To be fair, the shirt peddlers were selling the exact same shirt with the F bomb to both Clemson and Tennessee fans. It wasn’t just a Tennessee thing.

I can almost agree with everyone here - or at least see your point of view. It seems the determining factor with any behavior these days comes down to its effect on another persons “rights” or freedom. As long as you are not “hurting” someone else it seems you are OK - but should that be the only “rule” ? The envelope continues to be pushed farther each generation. Standards for vulgar or indecent were usually just “standards” … sure you were free to behave as you like - but you may might lose a promotion, a date, a friend, or other opportunities. These days not so much. But the bigger question for ME is why does everyone want to be so offensive towards others ? I mean what’s wrong with making the effort to NOT offend ?

Isn’t that pretty much the definition of “cancel culture”.

I don’t disagree with your last sentence.

I can remember the Stiff Records shirts being popular that said "If it ain't Stiff it ain't worth a f#@k" but that was 1977? somewhere in there.

Not much changes much.

When I was at the Last Lap the night/overnight before the Notre Dame game in 1990, there were people selling t-shirts saying "F*** The Luck, The Irish Suck!" The picture on the front was a leprechaun providing oral stimulation to one of our football players.

Hillbilly Hooligan that I was at that time, I thought long and hard about paying the $20 charge and wearing that shirt to the game. But it was a choice between getting hammered or wearing my lack of decorum and sportsmanship for all to see. Booze won out, as it usually did when I was at Tennessee.

Buying the shirt would not have done me any good. I got up at 6:00 AM, drank enough alcohol at Clement Hall for Guinness to use my body as a distillery, and missed the first half of that awesome game.

The only thing I've seen more vulgar than that shirt was a Texas A&M banner with Sarge entertaining himself on a Baylor cheerleader when those schools were both in the old SWC.

It is nothing new, especially with kids who are not quite mature and enjoy vulgarity directed at the enemy in their presence on game days.

Just as an example to show how things have changed (even on Volnation) in just a few years, I remember starting a thread in the Pub forum with a question similar to what you have stated above (when did f-bombs become a common noun, verb, adjective, etc) and it was deleted by a mod apparently because someone reported it as being too vulgar.

I’m not following give examples 😂

I worked around several folks for a number of years would be Offended if someone said "that f...ing piece of sh.t" but could soonbe heard saying "that freaking piece of crap", Meant the same thing but someone somehwere decided one was acceptable and the other not acceptable. My question is why?

😂 I’m giving you the response I always gave my kids.. I don’t know, that’s just the way it is

First, im not disagreeing about it not being polite.

Why is that combination of letters not polite when other combinations meaning the same thing are totally acceptable?
That's easy enough to read up on. Synonyms can have vulgar, polite, serious, frivolous, etc. connotations. The word chosen indicates, for lack of a better term, mood. Someone with a better foundation than me in semantics could explain it better.

You may be old, but still cool in my book. Life is much easier with your fellow humans without vulgarity in my experience.

Profanity just shows a lack of actual verbal skills. To get mad and fill in blanks with vulgarity makes you look and sound less intelligent (yes, I have done that, but it was over 25 years ago). Just another step in the downfall of American society; vulgarity, crime, lack of empathy, are killing “The American Dream”. More people carrying weapons than ever because they don’t feel safe anywhere. We are responsible for our own safety basically.

Actually law abiding citizens being prepared for the unknown by "carrying weapons" is actually a good sign. The narrative of the increase in weapons equals more crime and complete crickets as it relates to the rise in the amount of instances of "prepared" citizens preventing crimes by "carrying weapons" is wilful misinformation.

So sorry, my bad punctuation in my statement made it look like carrying a gun was bad, I DIdn’t mean it that way. We need personal protection because police are just showing up after the crime, not in time to stop them. Police have their hands tied with less help, and less laws to do their job well, not a good combination.

Kinda like watching Yellowstone, such a cool show BUT the profanity they use is not ok with me. I wasn’t raised like that. The F and damn word isn’t something I’m cool with or definitely NOT wearing a shirt with it across the front. Geez !

When I read you comment, I thought of this comment by John Adams. I think he is clarifying your (valid IMO,) point.

"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

John Adams
....
People without a shared sense of right and wrong cannot be governed by mere laws. Even up to and including fan behavior.

I'm far from perfect in characterizing the behavior of others, but I hope I'm better than I was 5 years ago.
