Is it really the Cal students who have the reputation for being whack-o liberals? Or is it the City of Berkley and perhaps the Cal faculty?

I just askin' 'cause I really don't know.

Also, last time I checked the mary jane was Tennessee's leading cash crop so I doubt we have a lot of room to cast stones on that subject.

I don't think they're THAT much more liberal than any other number of colleges down either of the coasts. But they are better about getting their message out there, no matter how ridiculous it is. And it's the staff of professors there doing most of this. Cal is a more notable bastion of liberalism for that reason, not necesarily because their ideas are more out there. Seattle, Eugene, Berkely, Palo Alto, Los Angeles, Tuscon... All these Pac-10 cities are pretty liberal. Same with pretty much every other major city on the west coast. Orange County is pretty much the only populous holdout of Republicanism out here.

My grandma dies two years ago but she lived near Redding for about the last 10 years of her life after living in Castro Valley for many years. Not too many granola munchers up there around Mt. Shasta. Also, I have an aunt in Sacremento and that seems to be a pretty "normal" city, whatever that means.

Sacramento has always reminded me of Little Rock.....your out driving around in all this farm land, and boom, there's this city right in the middle of it....

I was talking about largely populous areas that are out and out red. Places like Eastern Oregon and Eastern Washington, central California, yeah they are all hugely Republican. It's just that there aren't really that many people around there, the kind that could hold down a state. Orange County, on the other hand, has a lot of people and is mostly Republican.

Good. Now I can scratch Sacramento off my list of "places to visit."

In addition to Orange County, San Diego is pretty conservative (compared to California as a whole).

Yep. That's one of the two places around I know I wouldn't living in. Central CA, like San Luis Obispo or a nicer area around Fresno. Central to a lot of cool places.

The other... Vancouver, Washington. Low (if any?) income taxes in Washington, then shopping in Oregon with no sales tax. Cash money!

This thread should probably get moved to el pub.

I was offered a job to work in San Diego, doing basically what I do now for the same pay, but I decided to turn it down, too expensive to buy a house.

Yep. Reminds me of people getting this idea during the Reggie Bush scandal that a $750,000 house in San Diego is some sort of mansion. Uuhh, not the case.

true, but $750,000 is still $750,000....and no average college kid can afford digs like that while in school...

Yeah. Definitley something wrong there, and it needs to be looked into. I just got sick of everybody trying to pin it on USC. It's between Reggie Bush and his agents.

well, that may be true, but since he was on scholly at USC, USC will get punished should anything come of it....

Eh. Seems like it's gone under the rug for now. I know USC could get punished, but I think it would be wrong for that to happen. That's another thread though...

Couldn't agree more. Some of the politics are out of control but you get that everywhere. No state has the diversity of natural beauty and bounty that California does.

My bro just moved to Thousand Oaks and sis is in San Diego. If I could afford to live there the way I live here (or even close) I'd be packing the truck.
