Have on speed dial? Surely he doesn’t intend to just sit back and let the Hamilton legacy lead to the demise of his own reputation as UT AD. If today’s game is any indication of things to come, T-B Arena will soon be the most cavernous echo chamber in the entire SEC. Dooley at least has the high-level recruits coming in to give us some glimmer of hope for the football program. So far, Cuonzo hasn’t recruited at a level on par with the football program and losing to the Austin Peays of the world does absolutely nothing to bolster our attraction for blue-ribbon recruits. None of this bodes well for UT’s basketball future. Prior to the season, I had high hopes for Martin and figured there was some nice potential there based on his résumé, but so far I’ve been underwhelmed. Surely there is a cure out there for the Cuon-stipation that’s afflicted our basketball program. Methinks the SEC slate is going to be very ugly. It’s too late for Pat Summitt and Coach K to get together and produce a super coach for our men’s program, so Hart is going to have to grab the bull by the proverbial (basket)balls and get this program on the right track before it sinks completely off the radar. Looks like there’ll be no reason for Vol fans to celebrate Cuonzo this December.

I was and still am a huge Pearl fan and I hated as much as anyone to see him go but with him being let go and Harris and Hopson leaving Martin is going to need at least 2 seasons to show what he can do. If he loses a game like this next year then we have something to worry about.

Let's all get behind martin and give him all the time he needs to have a winning record. Hell, twenty years goes by in a flash.

Because 8 games isn't enough time to judge the quality of a coach. It took Coach K three years to produce a winner at Duke. Not saying Martin is gonna be Coach K, but firing him now or anytime this season would be idiotic.

Firing him at the end of the season would not be.

So you want him fired this afternoon?

I would rather he were never hired. The fact that the admin allowed Hamilton to make another hire when they knew they were getting rid of him is absurd; taking a program that routinely won 20 games over the previous decade and winning 20 games in 2 out of 3 seasons is not all that impressive.

Well I don't disagree necessarily; much like Dooley I thought hiring Martin was a mistake, but he's here and I think he deserves the rest of the season at the very least to show us what he's got.

Glad that you are content with hiring mediocre coaches and then giving them plenty of time to prove that they are still mediocre.

I'm content to give a coach that was successful at his last job more than one season to turn it around. People underestimate how bad of a situation we were left in when Pearl got canned. You honestly think Pearl (or anyone else) would be winning with these players? I say two years. If we haven't had significant improvement by year two, then Cuonzo has to go. But one stumble ( ok so it was more than just a stumble but still) shouldn't lose him his job.
Out of curiosity, what is your opinion on Dooley?

TRUT is trolling us. gsvol is taking a night off in the Politics Forum, so this is the easiest place for Kant to get his argue on.

What did Martin do that leads you to believe he was all that successful at MS? He took over a team that had perennially won around twenty games and missed the tournament and, after his initial season where they only won 11 games, he won over twenty games and missed the tournament.

Dooley should have never been hired at UT.

I do not see why coaches that should have never been hired at UT should be given opportunities to prove what everyone already knows. If Hart wants to take the AD in the right direction at UT, then he should be searching for proven football and basketball coaches. If, like Hamilton, he wants to find "needles in haystacks" then he can very well consign his fate to that of Hamilton's.

It has already been 8 games too many for Martin.

Still living in the past?

Get over it. I don't think many people were thrilled with the hire, but in the end, he is our coach. You have to give him an opportunity to prove himself.

No, you do not have to give him that opportunity.
