Theme of this thread: Name your favorite up-and-coming artist/band.

I will start:

B.o.B. (aka Bobby Ray)*: I've seen this guy in concert now three times. Last time was actually last night at the 930 club (it was him and Lupe Fiasco). Dude is insanely good. He's like a rock star who happens to be able to rap. He is very close to becoming my hands-down favorite artist.

His album drops in two weeks, but he has like 5 mixtapes that you can download for free. And I'd recommend doing that. If you want a sampler, youtube the song "Satellite". That is his best song imho.

*I'm arguably too late with this pick because "Nothing on you" is now starting to get a ton of airplay, but I was on board as early as July '09, so I'm still taking credit.

These are supposed to be similar artists? Doesn't matter, Passion Pit sucks.

They are similar. They are all indie artists that make electronic pop music. Similar doesn't have to be the exact same thing.

I agree that they aren't similar artists. But by no means does Passion Pit suck.

I would maybe classify Ghostland Observatory as a similar artist to Passion Pit -- though my friend disagrees with me on that. In either event, I think PP is better than GO.

I meant similar as in the same basic genre not the exact same thing. It would seem right if all those bands were on the same radio station or the same iTunes play list or in the same section of a record store. That's all I meant. As far as popularity all of those bands have a ceiling and it isn't that high.

Then try to explain the success of MGMT (without contradicting every you've written thus far).

Good luck with that.

You say that like MGMT is a household name. Most people don't know who they are.

But its interesting that you brought them up because with their new album you cant really put them in the above category anymore. After Oracular Spectacular yes, now no. They have changed their sound too much. Oracular Spectacular is popular within a specific subset but not as a whole, it never even charted on Billboard.

Who are these "most people" that you speak of? Are these people you hang out with? Are they married?

And what does this term "charted on billboard" mean? Oracular Spectacular peaked at #38 on billboard. The newest one--which I haven't yet listened to--peaked at #2. Are those not parts of the chart?

"Most people" as in the majority of average Americans. Whether they are young old male female single married it doesn't matter. The majority of people have no idea who they are. Your clique for friends don't count as the majority. It doesn't matter though. Because they have really toned done their sound and they don't apply to the discussion about similiar bands to Passion Pit.
