Who got next? (in music)

Theme of this thread: Name your favorite up-and-coming artist/band.

I will start:

B.o.B. (aka Bobby Ray)*: I've seen this guy in concert now three times. Last time was actually last night at the 930 club (it was him and Lupe Fiasco). Dude is insanely good. He's like a rock star who happens to be able to rap. He is very close to becoming my hands-down favorite artist.

His album drops in two weeks, but he has like 5 mixtapes that you can download for free. And I'd recommend doing that. If you want a sampler, youtube the song "Satellite". That is his best song imho.

*I'm arguably too late with this pick because "Nothing on you" is now starting to get a ton of airplay, but I was on board as early as July '09, so I'm still taking credit.

Dudes been around the block. He's worked with Grand Hustle for a while now. He dropped "Ill be in the sky" in summer 08. Nonetheless, phenom type talent IMO as well.

Yeah, his first mixtape was '07. The first time I saw him, though, was Summer '09, and still very few people knew about him.

He is a phenom. He is immensely talented and I'm kinda jealous that you met him. I imagine he's a cool dude.

He's pretty good, but better than Jay-Z? I don't think so. Edit* on my phone and didn't see the pic, beiber sucks. I thought you were talking about B.O.B

I'll take this on.

Here is an analogy. Assume that this message board existed Jordan's rookie year. Imagine that a Bulls fan got on here 30 games into the season and started saying that Jordan was better than Dr. J. The Bulls fan would be right, but he would be wrong at the same time. It's a question of measurables. There would have been no way to stack MJ up against Dr. J 30 games into his rookie season.

B.o.B right now is MJ in his rookie season. He is better than Jay-Z just like MJ was better than Dr. J, but you won't know it for 5-10 years.

To be fair, though, I've seen both guys live, and neither B.o.b -- nor any other act that I've seen --comes close to Jay-Z in a "hotness of girls at the show" contest. Wow. There is a very good reason why a b!$#ch is not one of Jay-Z's 99 problems. It was mindblowing.

I don't see Passion Pit being any bigger than any other similar artists, which isn't that big. I like them but there ceiling isn't very high.

I saw 'em last night. They are a sure thing. Amazing. They had a a room full of white kids jumping up, down, and all around like you've never seen.

Also, you may have seen the recent Rhapsody commercial where the chick name drops them alongside Lady Gaga* and Jack Johnson.

Also, you probably heard the Palm Pixi commercial that featured Sleepyhead.

They got next.

*I don't like Lady Gaga, but that's irrelevant. She is undeniably popular.

I don't the point of this post. They still have a low ceiling just because of the type of music they play. You are acting like they are going to be as big as U2. They will never even come close to the popularity of Lady Gaga or JJ no matter how many commercials they are name dropped in. If there next album isn't as good as there first then they have already peeked. I hope that's not the case because I really enjoy them.

Eric Church

I like very little new country, but I like this guy quite a bit.

(Please don't laugh me out of the thread if, in the Music City, he's well past the "who got next" stage. I live in DC, and he's not that well known up here...yet.)

I disagree with this point. What you're doing is lumping PP in with bands that have a similar sound in a general sense and then concluding that PP shares the same ceiling as these kinda-similar-sounding bands.

This is where we diverage in opinion. I think PP's sound is sui generis. Loose analogies can always be made, but nobody really sounds like PP.* And unique sounding bands blow up all the time.

I do agree that PP's next album will tell the tale, but I have high hopes.

*Now there is one fairly unique aspect of PP that could prevent them from ever hitting it big -- that being their penchant for writing songs without a chorus. Sleepyhead: great song; no chorus. Moth's Wings: great song; no chorus. There are a couple others. I really dig this aspect of their sound, but the radio might not smile upon it (pun not initially intended).
