Who will be Notre dame's new coach

You really think the Panthers would cut bait with Rhule after two years?

Wouldn't shock me, but the timing is just bad for all parties.

Extremely difficult for a sitting NFL HC to go back to CFB with the early signing day and all that fun stuff.

Yes, but he also received money directly from UA and the school also “donated” to his LLC. According to some notre dame boards his total compensation was around $7 million a year.

He is making 9.5 million at LSU so it’s still a pretty good raise but it’s a questionable move imho

Who really knows for sure? The NFL has always been his dream but so far he sucks worse at it than Saban did. As far as recruiting goes ND's brand and the transfer portal could help soften the blow.

ND would probably have bumped his salary up given the obscene contracts we are seeing.

With Kelly, I think he was just tired of ND more than anything. Tired of the restrictions for academics and transfers, and just didn't see a way to get over the hump if you will.

Face it, at LSU the admissions office is just going to rubber stamp whoever he wants.

Downside being, his schedule is now a gauntlet. Each and every year will be a grind and I'm not so sure Kelly is really used to that at this point. I honestly believe my 80+ year old mother could be the HC at ND and win 7-8 games a year. The talent difference with most of the teams on their schedule is absurd on paper. No such luxury any longer for Kelly.

I'm also not so sure Kelly is going to be so fond of the for lack of a better term passion involved with the SEC. Face it, you remove-Vandy, Mizzou, Ky, and maybe SC and the rest of the fanbases are insane in both good and bad ways. ND has tradition and pomp out both ends, but their game day crowds have been placid for every game I have attended there. A couple of thrown French's Mustard bottles and Kelly may well wish he was back at ND.

I believe ND still has restrictions on transfers. That was stated by Kelly's mouthpieces as one of the reasons why he bailed as ND could not really fully pull players from the portal.

Kelly is a wine and cheese man. Just look at his personal background. He coached at a wine and cheese school as well.

They can match anyone dollar for dollar. I think both parties tired of each other. I know alum and trust me alot of people were real tired of him and his mightier than ghe rest approach. Assistants were more apt to put ND on the resume than coach under him. He did no recruiting at all. He wiuld not lower himself to that level.

Yeah I don’t get where the OP is coming from.

Kelly hit his ceiling at Notre Dame, so why not take on a new challenge making 5x as much?
Think he was referring to his 1.8 million salary. The rest is benefits. I don’t blame him for bolting either.

High risk hire. The program is in the best shape that it’s been in since the early ‘90s. Two bad years and it can all unravel.

ND was in a tough spot because even though that is a high risk hire ND's players love him and were really pushing hard for him to replace Kelly. They risked a mutiny if they didn't give him a shot.

If he had to guess, I’d say they already have Fickell signed but they also agreed to let him coach at Cincy until the end of their playoff run. If they don’t make the playoff, he will be announceynext week, if they do they will let him finish it out one way or another.

Whether he is capable or not is irrelevant to all that. That said, that is a terrible reason to hire someone.

You should hire the person you believe to be the best candidate you can get.
I guarantee you part of the reason they think Freeman is the best candidate they can get is because the players love him. In a vacuum, Fickell might seem like the better choice.

They aren’t very bright if their analysis involves who the players love the most. The players aren’t going to love any of the candidates outside the program.

Why would 70 guys have a collective love for someone outside the program? The bonds are created between players and coaches in the same program.
Whether you're hiring a guy from inside or outside the program, you don't think whether or not the team will like the new coach is part of the calculus?

Kids like winning, so those kids generally like the coach on winning teams. Kids on losing teams also like their coaches if they are nice guys. So liking the coach would be a very minimal part of the calculation. It’s a billion dollar business, did you hire the best guy you can get.
