Who will be Notre dame's new coach

They aren’t very bright if their analysis involves who the players love the most. The players aren’t going to love any of the candidates outside the program.
With the portal being what it is, think about it again.

The equation is changing, as it already has in pro sports, to the players having a bigger voice in coaching choices.

I'm not saying it's good or bad but the ND players had come out strong, apparently, for Freeman and not listening could mean 4-5 or more hit the portal.

You can’t run a program on fear of what some players will do. They can genuinely love him and if he is terrible then that will set you much further back than some players leaving.

If he were terrible, I doubt he'd be at ND and so well thought of already.

Personally, I STRONGLY feel Fickell is the better choice and Freeman should cut his teeth at Cinci (which is a damn good spot right now to be first time HC) but you and I aren't the ones who have to sweat, suffer, and run through a wall for a coach.

The ones who do...... who are also the ones with the most to lose emotionally if he fails...... want to play for him.

The good thing is: Fickell won't go anywhere (unless Ryan Day is unfortunate) so if Freeman fails, there's a built in fallback for ND.

You mention Ryan Day...ND is about to try what Ohio St with Ryan Day and Oklahoma with Lincoln Riley tried, and had great success at. A long-time, highly successful coach left and the reins were given to a young assistant who had never been a HC before. We'll see just what kind of shape Kelly left the program in.

There are some instances where you don't need to blow the whole program up and start over - not every coaching transition is like how we do them at Tennessee.

I hope Marcus Freeman is smart enough to not try to immediately "put his stamp" on the program.

Lots of programs claim to "recruit themselves" but ND is one that does, I think. I've known several non athletes who wouldn't have gone to college if they couldn't go to ND. While I'm certain athletes would probably play elsewhere, ND has a mystique for some.

I'm not fully impressed with Day at tOSU because I think he doesn't assemble and control his staff like Urban did, Saban does, Dabo does.

If Freeman is too arrogant to realize how much help he needs to be really successful....... it'll be an epic nosedive.

If he had to guess, I’d say they already have Fickell signed but they also agreed to let him coach at Cincy until the end of their playoff run. If they don’t make the playoff, he will be announceynext week, if they do they will let him finish it out one way or another.

Well this took less than a minute to age horribly lol

I would hold your horses.

Day may very well be off to the NFL after the Bowl. Everybody and their mother knows Da Bears are gonna can their coach as soon as the NFL season ends. Would not shock me in the least for Day to get hired there since his former protege is their QB of the future.

That happens and Fickell may still end up at tOSU next season.

As we learned on a cold January night a little over a decade ago, the carousel cannot be called complete until the NFL hiring cycle is also finished.

I HOPE Day is smarter than that.

If Urban is getting his ass handed to him almost every week, Day will be obliterated. Surely even the Bears can do better.

Not that it’s gonna happen, but if ND wins The NC, does Kelly get a ring?

Correct he was making around 3 million. LSU is paying him 15 mil a year. Would you weasel out of town in the middle of the night for a 12 million dollar raise? I know I would. Even if he fails in 4 or 5 years he's going to be stupid rich.
It's a private institution, they don't give accurate contract numbers. I guarantee he was pulling 7+ mil.

Yeah, but it isn't anywhere near some kind of 50/50 split. The vast majority of it still comes from the school/athletic department. In Kelly's case, I bet a majority of his compensation came from UA.
Don't forget NBC, that's likely a fat contract.

I have thought, and I still think that Fickell will be very, very hard to pull from Cincinnati.... He says that he can live very, very comfortably on 3.6M a year (recent reports are that he will get a 7-year $49M extension) has publicly said that he doesn't just like Cincinnati- HE LOVES IT. Those are some pretty strong words from a very loyal and classy coach.... He is probably in the 1 percentile as far as honesty and integrity go...... he definitely is not a mercenary and 7M is a lot of money. Family and quality of life (less stress) are very important to him and he can recruit the Cincy hotbed of greater catholic league schools in the morning and be home for dinner that evening where he'll get a few players. With UC going to the BIG12 soon he'll able to recruit higher rated prospects. It's a win-win for both him and UC. Money is not everything to some out there and this guy walks to the beat of a different drummer. Very refreshing indeed.

3.6M is good work if you can find it. I agree money is not everything, my life changed when my wife said "I just want us to be comfortable ". If you can be comfortable making a good living, not having stress and can provide everything your family needs or would like. You're in a good spot.

I could see Kelly taking that job over the LSU job if the Chicago Bears job is indeed open soon.

More transparency yes, but why couldn't think have an arrangement where the school pays the coach $3-4m, and Nike (or whoever the school's apparel contract is with) pays them $3-4m? A public school would likely have to publicly disclose the amount of outside comp, but why couldn't they do it?
Sounds dangerously close to a kickback. "Hey UnderArmour, we'll contract to you for uniforms if you'll pay our coach's salary."

He’s basically shown he doesn’t need to move to make the playoff and he’s going to the Big 12 in a few years. Plus you can wait for your alma mater if Ryan Day gets an NFL job. Why take Notre Dame or LSU or USC where you get three years to fix it?
