Why did Coach Drink say this to CJH?

We can complain about Drinkwitz, his weird energy, and general goofiness all day, but his team beat our brains in, plain and simple. And following two years where we hung 60+ on them, he probably felt like we ran it up last year scoring instead of taking a knee around the goal line with under a minute to play. What goes around comes around.

Credit to Heupel for taking his lumps and not making a scene over it, either on the field or in the press, but he got a taste of his own medicine I feel like. He will get another opportunity at some point. Go make a statement of your own. It makes these games more fun when the coaches don't like each other. What else could possibly excite you about playing Missouri?

According to another article he said “We stand on business, Josh.” When I watched it live, CJH looked like he was sticking out his hand for a congratulatory handshake and there was no sign of anger at Missouri or the Coach. It was all one sided made up weirdness by Drinkwitz. I think he wanted it to be a big deal and about revenge while CJH was just disappointed in how we played. This was probably Drinkwitz biggest win ever. Heupel hasn't complained about the score in any subsequent interviews he just stressed the need to improve. Maybe Drinkwitz will mature but he has given some weird and creepy interviews since he got there. He also said he wanted his 12 year old daughter to date Brady Cook when she turns 18 which was beyond creepy. Weird dude!
Some can't handle success. When you've never had succes, when you do have a moment of it, your true self comes out. It is a sign that he'll never be successful because he isn't humble when it happens. Heupel beat Saban, but he didn't gouge his eyes out or act like a child. He shook his hand, congratulated him and went to celebrate with his team. That's a sign of a coach who is used to winning at a high level. It was a win that Drink will never experience in his entire career. I put Drink and Beamer in the same class of coaches.

It's bigger than winning and losing. It's how you handle success. It's as simple as handling a win like you've won before. I know Drink was excited for the win. But, it doesn't mean that his success is sustainable. He'll soon be on the short end of the stick just like Beamer.

Drink I’m sure was very proud of himself. I’m a big believer of acting like you’ve been there before. He’s entitled to make whatever comment he wants. They won convincingly, but I think Heupel keeps receipts and when we play them in 2025 (if he’s still the coach) it won’t be forgotten.

You say that but they’re having the kind of year they’re having with classes that are similar. They’ve had one class better than 30th since 2018.

2018 43rd
2019 34th
2020 49th
2021 30th
2022 18th
2023 32nd (4 4-stars; 15 3-stars)
2024 45th (1 5-star; 1 4-star; 12 3-stars)

Plus, there’s not a ton of difference between being 32nd and 45th. 1 more 4-star and a couple of 3s and he’s right back around 32 I bet. Even if not, being in the 40s isn’t unusual at MO.
They've also had a very favorable schedule this year. The reality is, that Missouri has been an even worse road team under Drink, than Tennessee has been under Heupel. Their road games this season were Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Georgia and Arkansas. That's not something they will have going for them in most years. They play at Alabama next year. How do you suppose that will turn out for them?

I was just looking at the same thing. Not a great recruiting class currently, but he had enough to dominate us for four quarters this year. We're not in a spot to talk too much.
Didn't we beat them 62-24 in Columbia two years ago and 66-24 last year?

Good lord. Yes, it matters that Tennessee recruits better than Missouri. This year will not be the norm, unless they start to recruit better.

If he continues to recruit in the bottom of the SEC, he won't last much longer and they'll be bad again after this year.

His business needs to involve recruiting a little better.

Per 247 sports, Missouri's Class of 2024 is currently #45 in the country, and dead last in the SEC. They only have 14 commitments, and we are just a month away from the start of the early signing period. That low ranking is with a 5 star in-state commitment in Williams Nwaneri, who they only landed because of a fat NIL deal. They offered similar money to an in-state WR named Ryan Wingo, but he chose Texas.

The Class of 2024, 247 Sports National Football Team Rankings, Among SEC Schools :

#1 ......... Georgia
#4 ......... Alabama
#5 ......... Florida
#10 ...... Texas A&M
#12 ...... Tennessee
#14 ...... LSU
#16 ...... Auburn
#19 ...... South Carolina
#20 ...... Ole Miss
#21 ...... Kentucky
#23 ...... Arkansas
#38 ...... Vanderbilt
#43 ...... Mississippi State
#45 .... Missouri

And this is during a great season. ^^^^.

Missouri's success is not sustainable in the SEC, if this is how they are going to recruit high school players. They had a favorable schedule this season. Their only road games were/are :

Vanderbilt
Kentucky
Georgia
Arkansas

I really do wish that we could keep playing them every year.
Good post. Their formula is going to be to get developmental players with a few highly talented guys. They'll develop those players and hopefully have a year like this one when they rise into the 2nd tier every 3-5 years. That is a "sustainable" formula but it isn't going to put them in the top tier.

I can't imagine what a hellscape the recruiting forum on VolNation would be, if Tennessee's class was ever dead last in the SEC and 45th nationally, in mid-November. Our recruiting forum goes into a full scale panic if we fall out of the top 15 in April.

Even worse when you consider that Florida likely won't even make a bowl game.
There is no doubt that we suck on the road this year .... big time. Kentucky and Vanderbilt may very well be the only two teams we could have beaten away from Neyland this season. Heupel must address this problem going forward. Since the South Carolina game a year ago, his team plays with ZERO confidence away from home. We always look lethargic and timid.

I guess we did give Alabama a pretty good half, if you want to find a positive.

Meh. He finally managed to beat Tennessee. Let him have his moment.

All that smack he talks will get the next game circled on Heuple's calendar. He should ask Beamer how that works out.

I think this was Drink's only comment to respond to the "last minute" score of last season.
Don't blame Drink at all for the comment.

I just wish we played them next year...any case, whenever we play them next, and we pound them like we have historically and Heupel needs to palm drink a business card during the handshake and say "Business closed".

Not a great recruiting class currently,
.... and I love this as an understatement ... Once again, I can't imagine how our fan base would handle it if we ever had a class like that in mid-November. They lost a head-to-head recruiting battle with Tulsa in August for a low rated 3 star LB. There would be a 3 Mile Island meltdown on here if we recruited like they do.

Is there a history here? Did CJH say something that might have pissed him off after the last couple beat downs we gave them? Also notice after he says it he practically runs away.

I just saw the video posted by Missouri on X. Basilio has it on his site. Wow... I had not heard that was out there.
That video is going to start a war. Directed a Heupel for running up the score last year.

Think you mean 2 years lol.

Yeah, Drink isn't worth bothering with. Mizzu had a good season. Good for them. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut from time to time. Hell, if Cornbread hadn't crapped the bed against BYU and GSU-he woulda had a 10; win season.

We better destroy those folks for like the next 5-6 years and I will just call the whole thing even.
We don't even play them next year.

Who knows about after that.

Historically we're 6-6 against them, and they've pounded us about as many times as we've pounded them.
