Why do Vol fans dislike MEM more than Vandy?

I love TN, but they do have to wear that pretty orange on Sunday picking up trash after a beat down of their girlfriend on Saturday night sometimes. lol:)

Someone cheering for Robert Dozier and Jeremy Hunt has little room to talk. Pot, meet kettle.

It's a mystery to me that Vol fans hate Memphis worse than Vandy,I pull for the SEC when TN is not playing. It's hard for me to pull for KY or FLA or etc.. when they are playing someone else because they are our rival. Memphis is in our state just like TN State or MIDDLE TN, but not in the SEC. Why do yall hate MEM so bad?

I have lived most of my life in Memphis. I had U of M football and basketball season tickets. Also attended Tiger High prior to finishing at U of T. A lot of folks from other parts of the state do not realize the hatred U of M fans have for the Vols. It wore on me to the point I no longer could pull for them. Believe me they hate us.

Academics in general. People around here think it's much better than it actually is. I guess that could be true for the area around every school, but it's definitely something I've noticed.

It is generally ranked somewhere in the mid-teens--behind the Ivy Leagues and the best of the privates, ahead of the best of the state schools and among the top of the rest of the privates.

Seems about right to me.

Should be in the mid-twenties and lower than more than a few state schools. You really think Vanderbilt is better than Berkeley?

2 championship games in 36 years does not a dynasty make. Besides, UT has the same number of BB NC's as Memphis (0)

Congratulations, I did not realize that the NCAA has started giving out participation trophies. How does that work, the further you advance the bigger the trophy?

.

Actually the NCAA does give out trophies to the Regional Champions. Seeing Villanova's on TV just reminded me of the 3 the Tigers have in the case.

Based on some pretty extensive experience with graduates of both schools, I certainly don't have a problem with that.

Congratulations. Memphis has a good basketball program under Cal; one to be proud of. No doubt about it. However, I am not ready to proclaim them the basketball dynasty that many Memphis fans seem to view themselves as.

The founders of Apple, Intel and even Myspace, as well as 62 Nobel laureates, a former Chief Justice and the inventor of the computer mouse that you may or may not be using all disagree with you. And I promise that if you leave the South, pretty much everyone else will too.

The folks that keep ranking them won't. It doesn't really matter, anyway; your assertion that Vanderbilt is overrated academically is just plain wrong. It is rated just where it should be, in the handful of schools below the Ivies and their equivalent and above pretty much everything else. Add Cal in that group if you like, but it doesn't change anything.

Oh, and Vandy has a pretty distinguished list of notable alumni as well. After all, the guy who invented the internet is a Vandy man.

Depends what you mean by "handful"...if you mean like 20 schools sure, but it is not on a level with Duke, Northwestern, Berkeley, Michigan, Wash U, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, etc.

I knew the Al Gore thing was coming. Haha. But he didn't even finish there.

Washington has no business on that list.

I meant Wash U in St. Louis not UDubb. But you're right it's the lowest. That's actually why I applied to most of the others but not Wash U. But my point is that there are plenty above Vandy. It's closer to UNC than it is to Duke.

Difference is, those 2 actually cleaned up their act and graduated.

Good for them. Just pointing out the hypocrisy of a Tiger High fan calling out UT for having girlfriend beaters. Whether they graduated or not is irrelevent.

I would suggest that Vanderbilt belongs exactly on the level with Cal, Northwestern, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, and Washington (I'm assuming you mean the Washington in St. Louis.) I would put it slightly below Duke if only because I know so many Vandy students from the east coast whose first choice was Duke. It is above Michigan, primarily because, as a state school, UM has different selectivity and educational mandates.

I have a bit of experience in the way such things work. I know which schools Vandy competes against for incoming students and how those competitions tend to shake out. I know which schools' graduates compete against Vandy graduates for jobs and graduate school admissions, and I know how those competitions seem to shake out. Both of those factors seem to validate Vandy's rankings.

As all of the information I have seems to say the rankings are pretty good, what is it that makes you believe they are wrong?

That's just it. I don't think they are wrong. I think that the two that I just linked, along with US News, are the three most respected rankings out there. Most people here look at US News first and use that as their basis. It has Vandy 18th. However, the other two have Vandy in the 30s in America. On average, Vandy is in the upper 20s. I don't think that's wrong. I just think most people spend so much time on US News that they don't realize it.

Your first link wouldn't load for me. I doubt the second is consulted much because not too many people come down to a decision of whether to attend school in Nashville, Sydney, or London. All I can tell you is that, having some knowledge of Vanderbilt's place in the pecking order, I think a mid-teens ranking is about right.
